This is sad news. I liked a lot of the things she did but particularly liked 'The Lady In The Van' film that she did for Alan Bennett. Strangely enough, I have dim memories of seeing said lady in Camden Town selling pencils and other stuff many decades ago - a local eccentric. Great performance by Maggie Smith - RIP.

From memory it was a couple of the same framed posters on the studio walls near the mixing desk. Very cool layout I thought.
-
The posters on the wall looked to be reproductions of the LP cover with some publicity blurb so not cribbed from there. If my recollection is right, the origin of the art is of some pattern sketches by John Coltrane himself. My copy has an unusual play history. Prior to me acquiring it the story was that it was played once by original owner to transfer the content across to reel-to-reel tape, then stuck in a cupboard for a few decades !

I have a copy of that AU 4950 Cosmic Music on Coltrane Recording Corporation. Remarkably, it is still in near-mint nick. There are photos, I recall, of Alice Coltrane's Dix Hills recording studio showing posters of that grey-pattern cover art on the walls.

I seem to recall hearing that their relationship was conducted without either speaking the other language - Greco was asked on film about this.

That's a good one. All of those 'Orchestra of the 80s' albums for Albert Marx are worth hearing. Will dig out. The one time I saw Wilson's orchestra on home turf he still had much of this lineup in place. People like Jack Nimitz ('The Admiral') and drummer Mel Lee, plus his son on guitar.

Very sad news and the world is a lesser place for his passing - RIP. The last time I saw him was NorthSea in 2006 when he did a Clifford Brown tribute with Eddie Henderson, Randy Brecker, Mike LeDonne, Buster Williams and Al Foster. The NorthSea glory days. Before that I did catch a free performance by his quartet at Lincoln Center square around 1994. Amazing that such performances could be caught for free back then- part of NYC Jazz Festival. Always a dignified and gracious stage presence, excellent performer and superlative composer/arranger. That Jazz 625 TV show he did in 1964 with Tubby Hayes Orchestra was stellar.

Wow - blast from the past. Since then, I have got a copy of this LP. I need to dig this one out again (if I can find it !) Bud fitted in seamlessly as a 'London gent'.

Apologies - I have just checked my vinyl and it is 'Open Door' that was on Muse LP and not 'Off Limits'. So the Rearward must be the only CD and LP reissue of that one (apart from Campi vol 2).
-
But sadly - no 'Folk Songs'. Didn't realise that they had reissued 'Off Limits' but checked my CBBB vinyl and it turns out that in addition to the Muse I have got the Rearward of that one too. Duhhhh !
-
Thanks for checking - Vol 1 no. 609/Vol 2 no. 352 here. Very good to have the 'Folk Songs' selections in good sound. That dubious reissue LP is appalling, although they did an OK job with the cover. I thought the story at one time was that Rearward were going to reissue that one in its entirety. Guess they lost interest. Very nice to have the 'Off Limits' session in good CD sound in the 'Blowing The Cobwebs Out' set. I can't imagine cobwebs ever getting near the CBBB !

He was, of course, part of that magnificent John Taylor Trio with Palle Danielson. Saw them a number of times over the years, always great. Particularly fond memories of a Taylor performance at a beautiful rural church in Plush, Dorset in the 2000s, as part of the Brendel Festival. I had initially thought that France was playing that one but it was probably just Taylor. Which makes it incredible that he did the gig with Yazz Ahmed. I wasn't aware of this.
-
So sorry to hear this. He was a big part of my jazz education with those sleeve notes and Mosaic booklet essays. His contribution will be missed - RIP.

So sorry to hear the news of the recent death of British drummer Martin France at the young age of 60. He was invariably superb - whether with Loose Tubes in his younger days or as part of John Taylor's trio or the Kenny Wheeler Big Band. So tasteful and versatile. I think the first time I saw him was in 1989 with Loose Tubes (open air concert in Toronto) and the last time must have been last year at Swanage when he was part of Yazz Ahmed's group. It was always a sign of a good gig coming up if Martin was on drums. He will be very much missed for sure - RIP.

A fair bit of the first set sounded familiar and I do have it I think on vinyl on Trunk's 'KPM' release. This CD version sounds superb though and I'm very glad to have it on CD. The CBBB are one of those bands where if you want to listen to them you want to hear it for several hours continuous so CD is very great to have. Also nice to have these two sets in their entirety with the idiosyncratic Campi packaging ! I just wish that someone had put out a decent legit reissue of the 'Folk Bag' LP. My so called German vinyl reissue sounds like a damn MP3.. Updated - CD2 of the first box actually has half of the 'Folk Bag' album. Too bad it isn't all of it.
-
Does what it says on the tin.. Definitely. Hopefully no need for rust remover !
-
Quite a bit of the first box still is - especially those suites. Less so the second box but it does include the 'Open Door' album which I have on Muse vinyl and it is good to have it on CD. I like the CD sound on set 1 - nice and clear, not compressed. I'm assuming that set 2 will be similar. There's also nice booklet notes in both sets which keep the likes of me happy. Not sure about the metallic box cover in set 1 though - it must have been done by the metal/rust fetishist who did the Bill Evans Verve monstrosity.🤡
-
Yes - it's taken me decades to get this and the second Emanon set but my CBBB collection is now complete. 🙂

Some good previously-unissued material on this 2CD set put out by Gigi Campi.
-
I've got a couple of those Liberty pressings with 43W73rd labels - an Ike Quebec and an early Hubbard. Sonics are very good.
-
Those 'White Heat' etc. albums weren't in the shops here when they came out, as I recall it. Again, must have been German-only issues. I only got copies many years later when they came up on jazzinvinyl. Worth hearing but personally I think that Humble, Persson and Clarke are missed.
