  1. "When a Japanese dive-bomber crashed onto the deck of his aircraft carrier near Saipan in 1943, Phil was hurled into the ocean, managing to avoid burning fuel and wreckage". Wow - when you think of it, even to have a musical career after this was something of a miracle.
  2. Indeed. No sooner do you add a new storage than you have an extra stray pile of the black stuff in the lounge !
  3. Yep, that's a really nice one too. What a great series those Rearward/Schema 2LP sets were. I see the 'And All Those Cats' was even back in print the last time I looked on their site.
  4. That was the very first CBBB LP I ever got - came out around 1974 on MPS/BASF. Sequel to 'All Smiles' - both nice LPs but as you say, mainly standards and not too much bombast.
  5. 'Mike Taylor Remembered' (Trunk Records)
  6. Remember seeing him play solo at Scotts - would have been about 1979-80.
  7. Hank Mobley 'Workout' (BN NY USA mono) Kicks ass !

Would that be the 'Cat Meets Chick' session for MGM recorded in 1954 that is included on Clark Terry's Emarcy session Verve Elite CD? In this case the 'chicks', according to the cover art, are Terry Pollard (vibes), Norma Carson (tpt), Corey Hecht (harp), Mary Osborne (gtr), Elaine Leighton (dms) and Bonnie Wetzel (bass).
  9. Johnny Coles 'Little Johnny C' (BN NY USA mono, DG side 1)
  10. Michael Heseltine (even more dandruff) Margaret Thatcher Caligula
  11. Isn't most of 'Companionship' already on Rearward/Schema's 'And All Those Cats' compilation by Shihab?
  12. Good catch I got my copy for £15 recently and I thought I'd done well. Better session than AMG might suggest. Yes, a good session I think - and certainly better than AMG suggests. I've a Japanese King pressing too which Wayne has signed - but always nice to have an original.
  13. Of course. I'd forgotten that gem.
  14. Happy birthday Evan. Hope it's another good one !
  15. Yep, that's my opinion too. I find it a bit too MOR/easy listening compared to some of the other sessions of the period (which - though all on the 'easy' side do have their harder moments). 'Montara' is very popular with DJs and has been sampled quite a bit I believe.
  16. I blame it all on damn Northern Rock and other reckless banks. The way they were giving out 5x+ income multiple mortgages etc. to the self employed and amateur landlords on the basis of self-certification was totally reckless. Now we will be back to 3x multiples maximum with bigger deposits and - thanks to these bozos - higher interest rates for all. And that useless CEO gangster guy Adam Thingy gets a £1M payoff for setting their 'strategic direction' which was a large contributor to this? Outrageous and meanwhile the FSA, supposedly 'policing' all of this - were sat on their butts, attending stratergic direction seminars, going to lots of nice jollies and freebies etc. Can the lot of them and put them in concrete jackets ! This will come back to bite Gordo big time.
  17. £120, at the current paltry rate of £1 = Euro 0.8. Just enough for a couple of big boxes and a Mosaic single..
  18. very sadly, Ozzie passed today after a long illness. I am very sorry to hear this. Ozzie was very friendly to me on a visit years ago to the Lighthouse. At the time he was putting together Sunday jazz sessions - and seemed to be very much the driving force in keeping the Lighthouse alive as far as jazz is concerned. It's only afterwards that I fully realised that he was such a huge contributor to Savoy, Prestige etc and would have loved to have thrown a whole heap of questions his way, although at the time I was aware of his A&R work for 60s Prestige in particular. A great friend to jazz during his A&R years and after, he will definitely be missed. RIP and many thanks.
  19. How 'bout this one: Definitely. That's for the graveyard shift 1pm post-lunch slot to wake up the punters
  20. We've been "Blaired" - or is it "Browned"? Either way it comes out as a turd.
  21. I thought that this would have happened over here at least 5 years ago ! Things have been kept artificially buoyant by banks and building societies who have been basically loaning money to pretty well anything which has a pulse (and a lot which hasn't). I've thought for some years that this will end in tears and - what do you know.. Lending criteria now back to where we were around 12-15 years ago. No bad thing IMO - too many 'amateur landlords' and people in over their heads.
  22. That's definitely it. I heard The Man himself say it (I think ) Oh, hang on - maybe Valerie is right. Easy solution is to check the Festival Hall recording I have.
