  1. Indeed. Gordon Beck and Alan Ganley who are on the 'Down In The Village' and 'Late Spot at Scott's' recordings, in particular, are World-Class. Didn't Ganley also live and record for some years in the US? (recording with Jim Hall and Art Farmer, among others).
  2. Steve, I'm thinking of Honest Jon's from way back (early 80s) when there was a branch at Camden Lock (now a girlie boutique I think) as well as branches near Charing X and Portobello. That Camden branch was near my old student digs and the basement was stacked full of jazz vinyl (drool..). I picked up many a 'brown bag' and 'Rainbow' Blue Note as well as blue label Libertys there. Invariably cutouts.
  3. McCoy Tyner Big Band 'Uptown/Downtown' (Milestone)
  4. Art Farmer 'Yesterday's Thoughts' (Japanese East Wind)

    Nat Adderley

Anyone else like Nat's work in the front line with JJ Johnson? I always felt he was a very good foil for JJ (JJ being the virtuoso analytical/methodical stylist and Nat being the contrasting 'seat-of-pants', more emotional guy). Not only on the Mosaic set but also on the two Pablos - 'Yokohama Concert' and the CD follow up, Volume 2. Have had great pleasure over the years enjoying JJ and Nat on their Yokohama gig, which was also beautifully recorded.
  6. You raise a very good point. The internet has opened up the opportunity to get hold of vinyl that would never, ever have appeared in the old neighbourhood stores (especially here in the UK, where you needed the secret password and a funny handshake to ever get to even view the Blue Note stash ). Just wished that we could have both - the internet outlets and the old neighbourhood stores. 'Compendium Book Shop' - that one rings a bell. Was that anywhere near the old Honest Jon's store in Camden, up near the market?
  7. Oh dear. Looks like I'm in for the first batch. Thanks porcy..
  8. Many of the 'Jazz 625' series were sold on BBC video back in the 1990s but that series didn't include the Golson. I got my copy by making a video recording off of BBC2 back in about 1986, when they broadcast a whole load of them as part of a 'Jazz Week'. The intro was done by Steve Race, who was MC for the original show. Sadly, it's never been rebroadcast since, to the best of my knowledge (wake up BBC4 !) Some of the '625' shows seem to have been issued recently on DVD by Andorran pirates but they are missing intros by Steve Race/Humphrey Littleton and don't have the intro/outro credits. Very annoying ! The job needs to be done legit (maybe Jazz Icons should be given the job?)
  9. More, really, of an Amancio d'Silva session than a Harriott session in terms of style and laid-back vibe. Any fans of d'Silva in particular should like it. Echoes too of 'Cosmic Eye - Dream Sequence' that was to follow in a few years time.
  10. What is astonishing about this brilliant recording - and that I recently read - is that only 750 were originally pressed on vinyl ! Anyone interested with a turntable is recommended to pick up the Japanese Fontana LP reissue, which sounds fine. Dave Goldberg - Very fine London-based jazz/studio player of the 50s/60s, sadly long since passed. That Tubby video must be from the 'Jazz 625' recorded by Benny Golson with a UK orchestra largely comprising members of the Hayes and Dankworth big bands. Recorded 1964 I think - near the start of this series on the fledgling BBC2 channel.
  11. 'Old York' is a very cool place indeed - packed with history going back to the Romans and then the Danish Vikings, for whom it was a major port and settlement. Here's one of the main medieval city gates - Micklegate Bar. Back in the days of the Wars of the Roses, they would hang the severed heads and body parts of traitors/userpers on pikes from the tower.. Micklegate (the road) used also to have a very nice classical & jazz store with vinyl upstairs - at least until recently (I think they have since moved down the road).
  12. This sort of thing is happening to vinyl emporia just about everywhere. All the interesting places shut down and we are left with a plethora of condos, coffee shops and 'designer' boutiques.
  13. Torrential rain, thunder and lightning here.
  14. Toshiko Akiyoshi 'Toshiko Plays Billy Strayhorn' (Disco Mate, Japan)
  15. Manfred Mann 'Chapter 3' (Vertigo, swirl) Mike Westbrook 'Metropolis' (RCA Neon)
  16. George Clinton Bootsy Collins Victor Wooten
  17. Really enjoying the sound of this set with my re-jigged system with filtered supplies on a separate mains spur and with the 'Graham's Hydra' hooked up. For once, I'm not missing having this one available as a Mosaic LP set.
  18. Wot - no Tubby Hayes and Joe Harriott? or Martial Solal.
  19. William Russo and the London Jazz Orchestra 'Stonehenge' (Columbia Lansdowne mono)
  20. Ray Russell Quartet 'Turn Circle' (UK CBS green label stereo) With the 'psychadelic' cover hated by Ray and as featured in this month's Record Collector mag.
  21. Miles Davis Bitches Brew LP set, LP2
  22. Oliver Nelson Argo/Verve/Impulse, CD2
  23. I like the material that's under his name which was included on the OOP Mosaic Atlantic New Orleans Sessions set.
