Possibly you might be thinking of 'Tubbs In New York' (with Clark Terry) and 'Return Visit' (with James Moody and Rahsaan Roland Kirk) which are Tubbs albums but with American names and recorded in NYC. Both originally issued on Fontana vinyl and reissued on CD by Universal UK. Dusty usually has them.
I can heartily recommend all of the Fontana albums, including the various big band albums ('Tubbs', 'Tubbs Tours', '100% Proof', 'The Orchestra') and the small group sessions (inc. 'Mexican Green', 'Late Spot at Scotts' and 'Down In The Village'). Most are on CD apart from 'The Orchestra' (the weakest of the batch in jazz terms but still well worth a listen).
Tubbs was born in London so must have gone to school somewhere in that area.
