  1. Yep, he (Guido 'Guy' Fawkes) came pretty close to blowing up the Houses of Parliament on behalf of a Catholic plot ('Gunpowder Plot') in the 17th Century, discovered last minute stacking the last few barrels of gunpowder in the basement just as Parliament was about the meet. If it had happened it would have blown the whole place to smithereens. Since then his 'effegy' (with the usual moustache) is burned on numerous neighbourhood fires (getting rarer these days) and fireworks are expended (getting more common thanks to cheap imports). All part of the Protestant/Catholic religious troubles of those time that is still remembered. US-style Halloween of a few days earlier is threatening to push it to sidelines these days though, a sad trend. Glad you enjoyed the Joe Henderson set. My pleasure to having chanced across Dusty's hype (for once, not unwarrented).
  2. Another belated one. Happy Birthday !!!
  3. You mean the auto-changer?
  4. Hapy Birthday porcy - Hope it's a great day and you get lots of good vinyl listening done (all vintage, and no US 'audiophile' of course..)!
  5. My first copy of Miles' 'Filles De Kilimanjaro' was a mid-70s CBS Dutch issue and is still the best I have heard.
  6. Jackie McLean 'Swing Swang Swingin'' (BN 47W63rd DG mono)
  7. Just to sidetrack - I would say that I have had the same experience, no matter what the label. MOOD, ECM, SABA - they all sound great.
  8. Ermintrude Brian Snail Zebedee
  9. Sounds like a cult - sort of 'moonie-ish'
  10. I've found US-sourced vinyl from 72/73 onwards (time of the oil shock) to be of generally dubious quality so try to go for Japanese and European pressings of more recent stuff where possible. Agree that the German ECMs sound quieter and better fidelity than the Polydor pressings. All time low for warping must be those mid-70s ABC/Impulses - which are wafer-thin. Major exception though for Mosaic vinyl (both older and Q-LP), which I've always found to be really excellent.
  11. This is a terrific and overlooked album. I don't have the original (with the great cover) but I do have a 70s reissue on Trip. Lalo Schifrin is amazing. Totally agree. I think 'The Chains' is one of Dizzy's greatest ever performances and it is a fantastically arranged suite, very well recorded. The Japanese issue is .
  12. Awesome choice. I'll make do with my Wally/Conn. Currently spinning Clarke/Boland Big Band 'Our Kinda Strauss' (Rearward 2LP stereo) then, inspired by king ubu - Lonnie Smith 'Turning Point' (BN Liberty stereo)
  13. Which ones should we watch out for. Is it just Classic Records or are there others?
  14. Dizzy Gillespie/Lalo Schifrin 'The New Continent' (Japanese Mercury/Limelight stereo)
  15. Prepare to be astounded, Yves ! Strangely enough, listening to the 'Corner' box got me reaching for the 'Cellar Door' too.
  16. 'Jabali' is a real gem on disk 1 - so good it's suprising that it didn't get issued at the time. I really like the reverb keyboard effects used on this track (Harold Ivory Williams? Lonnie Liston Smith?) and the brooding use of the bass clarinet a la Bitches Brew. The sound has been cleaned up considerably too from 'Unknown Sessions'.
  17. Now there's optimism for you ! Either that, or an air of desperation by the seller..
  18. Nell Gwyn Nell Flanders Eskimo Nell
  19. The biggest no-brainer of all time. Yes, yes, yes !
  20. Some vintage 10"s so extra care required when dropping the stylus ! Lee Konitz/Stan Getz 'The New Sounds' (Prestige mono DG 10") 'Al Cohn Compositions Played By Miles Davis All Stars' (Esquire mono 10") Stan Getz 'New Sounds In Modern Music' (Savoy DG mono 10")
  21. Peter Burman's 'Jazz Tete a Tete' Columbia Lansdowne mono). With Shake Keane, Pat Smythe, Johnny Scott, Ray Premru, Alan Clare etc.
  22. Taken by Wolff at the Lee Morgan 'Search For The New Land' session. I've got that one on my wall.
  23. Anyone who has a decent vinyl collection (and space for the hardware) needs a RCM. The £400 I spent on importing the VPI 16.5 (with Euro-motor) was one of the best bang-for-bucks in my whole vinyl listening experience.
  24. Good chance if so that it will appear on Amazon UK in a year or so time at a good price. I'll wait until then.
