  1. Milt Jackson'Invitation' (Riverside blue label reel/mike, mono)
  2. These were UK Sony reissues from around 1999 - they only lasted a few years and then disappeared from the shelves. Most of these releases were of CBS/Realm LPs put out by CBS's UK office around 1968/69 which are themselves pretty scarce on vinyl (there must have been a hot-minute of enthusiasm for Brit jazz there that lasted 5 minutes until the sales receipts came in). Don't have a full list but the titles I'm aware of included: - Frank Ricotti 'Our Point Of View' - Ray Russell 'Dragon Hill' - Howard Riley 'Angle' - Tony Oxley 'Four Compositions' and 'Baptized Traveller' (but not, I think, 'Ichnos') There may be some others. Also, several Derams (including the two Mike Gibbs LPs) were also issued here in the UK for the first time on CD around this time, I recall. Incidentally, Ray Russell's very fine 'Turn Circle' was not I think issued in this batch but is now available from the excellent Dutton Vocalion. I have a few of the original LPs (including 'Four Compositions', 'Turn Circle' and 'Our Point Of View') on LP and they sound . They generally have either green or orange CBS labels. The Ricotti and Russell are particular favourites of mine (in fact one of the tracks on the Ricotti almost sounds like proto heavy metal). Incidentally, these LPs were not 'UK Columbia' issues but 'CBS Realm'. The Columbia name was registered to EMI in the UK during the 1960s and even in the 70s I remember seeing US CBS imports having the 'Columbia' name either marked out or covered up with 'CBS' labels (in fact I have quite a few of them).
  3. Not this "Bob"? Bob
  4. You'd freak if I actually showed up! I can just imagine...... "Mom & Dad, this is my 50-year-old friend from the internet, and he's going to spend Thanksgiving with us...." "Mind if I make a few long distance calls?" "Your Mom is HOT!" "Umm....where do you guys keep the plunger?" etc., etc.
  5. I am (we all have our crossses etc. etc.) - and I've broken it by blasting Horace Silver 'Retrospective' at full crank. :rsmile: The decibel level of the Tolliver Orch. should be next up..
  6. Saskatchewan - 44 points. Anything for a Mosaic. I have spent time in both places and can vouch that they are freezing cold and FLAT.
  7. Gets my too !
  8. One of my all-time faves ! Salena Jones 'Alone and Together' (RCA Victor). Superb early 1970s LP by this fine British singer. Another 'London find'. -_-
  9. I'm assuming its possibly "the" Bob with the news from the horse's mouth - but maybe I'm wrong..
  10. Horace Silver "Retrospective" (Blue Note 4CD) - as a deletion and very cheap copies of Ian Carr's Keith Jarrett book and the Zawinul bio.
  11. In a panel discussion yesterday, Charles Tolliver raved about the merits of vinyl, said there was absolutely nothing to compare with it and admitted that he still had several decks at home which got lots of use. When asked about the early Blue Note sessions he also admitted that his knees were knocking big time before his first Jackie McLean session ('It's Time' presumably) and that he had to steady them. Got a quick chance to ask the great man about forthcoming Mosaic plans. Not too much given away but it looks like there might be a Select under way with Stanley Cowell/John Hicks Strata-East material.
  12. Thanks Brownie ! I woke up, realising it's not a dream (that and the fabulous Charles Tolliver concert ). One of the sets looks as if it has the first Mosaic catalogue and flyer in there, seemingly preserved in aspic ! I nearly got all of the sets that they had in. A Kenton 'Holman/Russo' LP set sold before this lot (must have been £25 too) but somehow the buyer missed the other sets or must have been a Kenton-only freak. I have that set, so that's OK. As they were high up on a shelf and price wasn't clearly visible, I fear lots of people must have eyed them but asumed they were priced much more. Only when I asked for them to be taken down was the good news revealed.
  13. Congratulations for the baby girl !
  14. For the first (and probably last) time in my life I hit the Mosaic motherlode today - and in London of all places. LP sets: Johnny Hodges (£30) Herbie Nichols (£30) Desmond/Hall (£30) Baker/Mulligan (£25) Quebec/Hardee (£25) Clifford Brown (£30) CD set - Basie Live (£50) All immaculate and look unplayed. I even got additional bulk discount.
  15. Found that particular Japanese CD for $6 in LA many years ago. It's going on now.
  16. Everything about this release is great - the fiery alto solos from Criss, the cool cover art, adventurous instrumentation and very original scoring/compositions by Horace Tapscott. A winner !
  17. Charles Tolliver Big Band in London tonight - and Tolliver 'in conversation' before that. Part of London Jazz Festival week.
  18. Oliver Nelson, CD6. 'Peter & The Wolf' session with Jimmy Smith.
  19. I'm "in", too.
  20. Cannonball Adderley 'In The Land Of HiFi With Julian "Cannonball" Adderley' (UK Emarcy/Nixa mono)
