Gilles also (sort of) hosted the 'Jazz Britannia' weekend event at the Barbican about a year ago. Funilly enough a flyer arrived today from my local arts centre mentioning a forthcoming show he is doing (DJing between shows I guess) -'Gilles Peterson Presents Seu Jorge & AfroReggae'. Anyone heard of these guys?

I have a number of those - they are 1950s pressings. UK Columbia was an imprint of EMI that lasted through to around 1970. The Columbia/Clefs were Clef/Verve recordings issued under licence around the same time as (or just slightly later than) the originals. Other EMI imprints of the time were HMV and Parlophone. I have several of the Dizzy Gillespie Verves on this imprint.

Francy Boland 'Flirt & Dream - Francy Boland in the Background' (Saba stereo)

I think all of the above apart from 'Congo Lament' have previously been out as Conns. They all need to be available again though. The Harold Vick in particular. Not sure 'Congo Lament' has ever been on CD (I have an LP of it with the weird monkey-in-earmuffs jungle scene ). Good music though !

Big John Patton 'Boogaloo' (BN 'Rare Groove')

Good suggestion, Soul Stream. Just put side 2 of the 'Rare Groove' LP on the platter. Indeed it is a mindblowing LP. This session has never got the plaudits it deserves (and is probably my all time favourite BJP). Side 2 a particular fave on this one with 'Shoutin But No Poutin' hitting a great groove, track 2 ('Spirit') with Harold Alexander going completely apeshit ( ) and 'B & J (Two Sisters)' (they sound pretty cool) ending things very much on a high with some nice Alexander flute work. Great cover art of Big John in action and thoughtful sleeve notes by John Zorn. What is there not to like?

How about Donald Byrd 'The Creeper' (for folks who don't have the Mosaic). With Pepper Adams and Chick Corea. Well worth a reissue - last time out was on vinyl in the 'Rainbow' series.

Barbara Thompson's 'Paraphenalia' 'Wilde Tales' (UK MCA). Cost £1.49 !

Strong 'buy' recommendation for this set - it is outstanding. As mentioned, it compiled 3LPs on a 2CD set and was part of an excellent Verve series of such compilations (the Gillespie/Stuff Smith, various Ben Websters etc. also come to mind). Sound is good and you get great soloists like Lee Morgan, in addition to Diz, featured throughout, as well as superb arrangements from Melba Liston, among others. Original cover art in the liner notes too !

His name is also behind 2 volumes of this compilation by Universal UK, inspired by the rare nuggets in his vinyl mountain. As good a sampler of British 60s/early 70s modern jazz as you'll find anywhere. Volume 3 is apparently due out soon. His radio show throws up occasional gems from his ( ) rare jazz vinyl collection, in addition to the usual acid jazz/R&B fare. His mid-80s radio shows (for Capitol Radio, London I think - before his BBC days) used to have some good stuff on them. His show was the forst time I ever heard selections from Don Wilkerson's Blue Notes.

Looking at the cover again just noticed there are 3 guys plus an alien..

Looks like the music is from the 'Faces' LP, which was recorded in 1968 in Koln. Certainly, the early 'classic' lineup of the band is all in-situ on this video with Derek Humble and Ake Persson. Art Farmer also in the lineup. Time to dig out that MPS LP !
