  1. Many Happy Returns - hope that you get some good new music !
  2. What 'stereo' pressing was that one? A Conn 'Wally'?
  3. Horace Silver 'Blowin' The Blues Away' (BN 47W63rd DG mono)
  4. Corky McCoy James Finney Roberta Flack
  5. There goes the next installment of bargain Euro Mosaics..
  6. Kate Bush Old Bull and Bush Bush
  7. 'World at War' is still an absolute classic. First saw this back in about 1972 when it was first broadcast and it made a massive impression, at a time when these things were still 'relatively' recent (shocks me even thinking of it).
  8. (In descending order) 50s : 'Plus Four' 'Saxophone Colossus' 'The Sound of Sonny' 'Vol 2' 'Live at the Village Vanguard' 'Rollins Plays Bird' 60s: 'Alfie' 'Our Man In Jazz' 'East Broadway Run Down' 70s: 'Nucleus' 'The Cutting Edge' 'G-Man'
  9. One of the first LPs I ever bought was an Atlantic twofer called 'The Atlantic Years - The Art of Charles Mingus'. The first track of LP1 had 'Moanin' and Pepper Adams fantastic full sound leading into the wild ensemble. I've always loved this track and it was no suprise recently to hear a rip off of the tune featuring on TV on a beer commercial. Not half as good as the version with Pepper though. Had more of a problem at the time though with 'Passions of Man'. Another track on the aforementioned twofer.
  10. Wilbur Wright Louis Bleriot Amelia Earhart
  11. 'Ike Quebec Complete Blue Note 45s' LP2 I'll be giving the Maynard Roulette LPs a spin a litle later too.

    Rashied Ali

The Jaco biography documents these I think.
  13. Have you seen the biographical movie 'Hillary and Jackie', evan? Emily Watson in the title role puts on a fine performance. I can remember way back ('73?) when it was announced that she had MS and was retiring from active performance. Caused quite a shock in the music world at the time.
  14. Anyone have any ideas as to what's coming up in the next round of Dutton Vocalion Brit Jazz reissues (no doubt there will be at least one more Garrick, perhaps?)
  15. The copy I have is at least NM - sleeve and LP. Cost - £10. After clearing out 45 years of dust with the VPI it sounds like a new LP. Love that great William Claxton photo on the front cover as well !
  16. I have a Bethlehem original of the 'East Coasting' and will give it a spin later to check the sound - a good reminder. There was also a UK Parlophone issue of this one which probably sounds better.
  17. Swell, here's mine: That's currently available on a twofer. And at the excellent Teutonic bargain shop for low price (at least it was last time I looked www.zweitausendeins.de - I think I paid 3 Euros for it.)
  18. Horst Jankowski Monica Lewinsky Slick Willie
  19. Gordon Beck 'Gyroscope' (Morgan stereo) John Lewis/Bill Perkins 'Two Degrees East, Three Degrees West' (UK Vogue mono). Great music of course and the Vogue pressing of this one sounds wonderful !

    Rod Levitt

Count me in too for a Rod Levitt Mosaic Select. Really like that 'Dynamic Sound Patterns' LP on Riverside.
  21. I share your enthusiasm for the great medium that is vinyl, Big Al. The beauty of good vinyl is that it has such presence and makes you feel 'part of the performance' that CDs never do IMO. Played back with a good arm/deck/cartridge combination and you are in another world. Case in point - just listening to the Elvin Jones Mosaic on CD. Fantastic music by a great artist but you still end up feeling somewhat detatched from it all. Then put on '2 Degrees East, 3 Degrees West' by Lewis/Perkins on the UK Vogue label and the full, rich mono sound causes astonishment and absolute involvement. Well, that's my experience anyway.. Congratulations - it will cost you a few $ in the years to come. That I can guarantee.. :
  22. James Jamerson Michael Henderson Mtume
  23. Donald Byrd 'Mustang' (BN NY USA mono)
