  1. Barbara Thompson's 'Paraphenalia' 'Wilde Tales' (UK MCA). Cost £1.49 !
  2. Strong 'buy' recommendation for this set - it is outstanding. As mentioned, it compiled 3LPs on a 2CD set and was part of an excellent Verve series of such compilations (the Gillespie/Stuff Smith, various Ben Websters etc. also come to mind). Sound is good and you get great soloists like Lee Morgan, in addition to Diz, featured throughout, as well as superb arrangements from Melba Liston, among others. Original cover art in the liner notes too !
  3. His name is also behind 2 volumes of this compilation by Universal UK, inspired by the rare nuggets in his vinyl mountain. As good a sampler of British 60s/early 70s modern jazz as you'll find anywhere. Volume 3 is apparently due out soon. His radio show throws up occasional gems from his ( ) rare jazz vinyl collection, in addition to the usual acid jazz/R&B fare. His mid-80s radio shows (for Capitol Radio, London I think - before his BBC days) used to have some good stuff on them. His show was the forst time I ever heard selections from Don Wilkerson's Blue Notes.
  4. 11.99th hour order for me for the Stitt and the Joe Pass.
  5. How about the Tommy Flanagan 'Lonely Town'?
  6. Looking at the cover again just noticed there are 3 guys plus an alien..
  7. Looks like the music is from the 'Faces' LP, which was recorded in 1968 in Koln. Certainly, the early 'classic' lineup of the band is all in-situ on this video with Derek Humble and Ake Persson. Art Farmer also in the lineup. Time to dig out that MPS LP !
  8. Neil Ardley 'Greek Variations' (UK Columbia stereo)
  9. Just spotted these gems: Benny Bailey Derek Watkins Dusko Gojkovic They seem to be taken from a WDR documentary of the band. Anyone know about this documentary?
  10. Perkin Warbeck Henry VII The Seven Samurai
  11. Joe Santiago Panama Francis Gen. Manuel 'Pineapple Head' Noriega
  12. Bought 'Realization' on Capricorn from a cut-out bin back around 1975. Cost me the grand total of about £0.50 as I recall. Great album - best way to get the music now though is probably that Soul Brother compilation posted in the picture above. There are 2 volumes of Eddie Henderson available on this label (each is either a single CD or a 2LP set). Dusty Groove in the US is a good source for these Soul Brother reissues.
  13. Tweety Yardbird-oroony Mickey Rooney Wayne Rooney George Clooney James Moody
  14. That disk with the 'Dakar' album on it is my personal favourite.
  15. The Internet, for sure. The advances in PC technology and optical fibre communications were fairly predictable based on the trend extrapolations the Profs at Uni were putting out way back when but the ability of the internet to totally transform every aspect of society was not. Jeez, when I think that just 25 years ago I was punching a stack of paper cards to program a whole floor full of hardware in Fortran 77 to work out some daft equations 'overnight' (assuming you didn't drop the whole lot and screw up the order of the control cards ), the mind boggles as to just how far we have come !
  16. A lot of people don't like this one but personally I love it. The sound of this stereo issue is also outstanding - one of the best I have heard from the 'Liberty' period. Must be one of the last heavy vinyl Blue Notes. The cover, of course, is priceless !
  17. King Kong King Kong Bundy "King Kong" Bruiser Brody Donkey Kong Don Quixote Teflon Don
  18. One for Big Al?
  19. It could be worse. They might have put the towel rail in your office !
  20. Hank Mobley 'Reach Out' (BN Liberty stereo) Hank Mobley 'A Caddy For Daddy' (BN NY USA stereo) Hank Mobley 'No Room For Squares' (BN NY USA mono)
  21. Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin Big Band 'Salted Ginko Nuts' (Japanese RCA)
  22. Sophia Loren Loren Schoenberg Arnold Shoenberg
