  1. Incidentally, this is one Blue Note where I've never heard a very good copy of the original mono LP. There seems to be a distortion problem with this title that is not present on the stereos. Stereo is the one to get. Now back to the RVG CD ..
  2. They can be very variable, in my experience (a bit like New Jazz in that respect - when good they are very good. When bad they completely suck). I've had more luck with the UK pressings, to be honest. I think some of the very early ones came out over here on Parlophone and these are probably the best of the UK versions. Very heavy vinyl.
  3. The Singing Detective Kojak Stavros
  4. I've just checked the original stereo issue of the LP and 'Aquarian Moon' (I'm assuming that is also the first track on the CD) is clearly in stereo, with Joe Chambers clearly on the RH channel. Strange..
  5. Enoch Light Victor Sylvester Mantovani
  6. Blue Mitchell 'Out of the Blue' (Blue label DG........wait for it.....(drum roll)....... Riverside' )
  7. The UK Riversides were produced by 'Interdisc' for Riverside and don't have the flat edge - however the early ones have nice heavy vinyl (I have a 'Sounds of Sonny' that is in this category). These can sound superb in the mono pressing. The later ones have the blue label and lighter vinyl but again sound good and have original laminated cover art. I have a 'Kerry Dancers' by Johnny Griffin that is in this category that I'm sure sounds as good as the US version; it is magnificent. The great thing was, it only cost £5 !
  8. Woody Shaw - 'The Iron Man', 'Love Dance', 'Stepping Stones' Miles Davis - 'Agharta', 'Get Up With It', 'On The Corner' Gil Evans - 'Plays the Music of Jimmy Hendrix' John Surman/John Warren - 'Tales of the Algonquin' Mike Westbrook - 'Metropolis', 'Citadel/Room 315' John Taylor - 'Pause and Think Again' Neil Ardley - 'Symphony of Amaranths', 'Kaleidoscope of Rainbows' Lee Morgan - 'Live at the Lighthouse' Pat Martino - 'Impressions', 'Live' RR Kirk - 'Rahsaan Rahsaan' Clarke-Boland/Getz - 'Changes of Scene', 'Off Limits' Cedar Walton - 'Eastern Rebellion 1 - 4' Chet Baker - 'Broken Wing' Lots of great jazz from the 1970s..

Yep, not to be missed !
  10. Freddie Roach 'All That's Good' (BN NY USA mono)
  11. Duke Jordan 'Jazz Lab Series Vol. 1' (Signal mono)
  12. Indeed ! What a shame he didn't live to see 80; however he crammed more into 40 years than just about any other musician. Long may his music reverberate ! I'll spin a healthy quota of Coltrane today (starting with 'Mating Call')
  13. Tadd Dameron/John Coltrane 'Mating Call' (Prestige 50th St DG mono)
  14. Gordon Beck Trio 'Doctor Dolittle Loves Jazz' (Major Minor)
  15. Grrrr - still waiting for mine. Hopefully it will arrive next week..
  16. Excuse me for jumping in here, but Jazzbo's memory is correct. Demon's Dance was a regular release in 1987 and then repressed in the third and last Collector's Choice batch in 1997. It has never been a Connoisseur! It also has no bonus track. There were two Connoisseur batches in 1997. Each had a Jackie McLean title. They were Swing Swang Swingin' and 'Bout Soul respectively. What exactly is it you have, Sidewinder? Doh - It was 'Bout Soul' I was looking at. Sorry Jazzbo, you are quite correct, I need my eyes testing. Either that, or I have way too many CDs Too much looking at computer screens this week.
  17. Nat Adderley 'Work Song' (Riverside DG mono)
  18. The mono NY USA of that one is a gem. Most enjoyable !
  19. Oliver Nelson 'Screamin' The Blues' (New Jazz DG mono). With Eric Dolphy.
  20. 'Curried Jazz' - The Indo-British Ensemble (MFP)
  21. This one's rubbish ! You can send it to me.
  22. Definitely a Conn from 1997. Just checked my copy. Has one bonus track.
  23. It wouldn't be a Liberty pressing if it didn't have chronic ringwear and a clipped corner ! Great selection of music. Will look out for that one this weekend.
  24. Is the sound of the 'Demon's Dance' any better than the Conn?
