I saw him earlier this year (or was it late last year?) on one of his UK gigs then just a few weeks ago at North Sea. In both cases he looked a bit drawn and certainly a lot thinner than on previous times I've seen him. On both occasions though he played very well indeed - with great sense of purpose. Hope everything is OK with him !

Got the Atlantic 2LP 'Inner Space' set when it first came out and it has been a big favourite. The tune by Kurt Weil - 'This Is New' is a superb interpretation. Corea sets the scene perfectly in his intro. Some fantastic Woody Shaw and equally good Joe Farrell on the quintet session too. Joe Chambers on drums is the icing on the cake. Didn't the original 'Tones' LP come out on Vortex?

My Mingus Debut box has arrived, along with about half a dozen 2.99 Fantasy CDs and the great little West Coast Jazz box. I'm done for CDs for the rest of the year ! -

Holy Bejeebers ! I was in the Bath Fopp store yesterday and they had none of this stuff. Thanks for the advisory ! -
Blimey, track 2 is Duke Pearson's 'Sudel'. Maybe things aren't quite so bad. I agree also that the list of backing musicians looks pretty good. Jack DeJohnette can't be wrong (can he?).

The spiky haired 'fiddler extra-ordinaire' has apparently made his Blue Note debut. Sound samples here... Kennedy Plays Blue Note It isn't 1st April is it?

I just greedily studied the booklet at the shop, so I can give you a rough idea of the Mingus sideman stuff: the trios of John Dennis / Paul Bley / Hazel Scott with Mingus and Roach; a session by Shafi Hadi with Clarence Shaw; a session by Jimmy Knepper with Joe Maini and Bill Triglia; two Thad Jones sessions one with Frank Wess, one quartet; Oscar Pettiford with Julian Watkins and Phil Urso; the Quintet concert with Dizzy, Bird, Bud Powell, Mingus and Roach (and the trio tracks with the latter three); and there is more... Also the 'Four Trombones' session recorded in Brooklyn and some very off-beat 'thirdstream' sessions featuring Thad Jones and vocalist Don Senay, arranged by Alonzo Levister. The material in this set is truly fascinating. -
Give it a shot ! Flight Simulator 2004 is the place to start (you get quite a few aircraft to play around with, from Wright Flyer to 747-400 ). They even include a starter flying course which will get you to 'solo'. Or alternatively wait 'till Thanksgiving to pick up 'Flight Sim X' with what looks to be spectacular new graphics and easier 'usability' (apparently).

He was absolutely kickin' ass at the North Sea Fest recently. One of the loudest shows I've ever been to !

Sorry to hear this and good luck with things. Suspect that it's like a lot of these things - hell at the time but after a few years a good perspective takes hold. Possibly a change for the best? (silver linings etc.) With all these things I find it best to set up a good 'action plan' and then implement it. Makes you feel better if nothing else ! -
Big John: accent on the blues
sidewinder replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Artists & Recordings
'Accent' is a fine LP by Big John (must dig it out of my racks when I get round to finding it). Copies of the Rare Groove CD/LP shouldn't be too difficult to find in the US. -
Here in the UK just about every two bit town or village this hot Summer is jumping on the bandwagon and starting up their "(Insert name of village here) Jazz Festival" as an accompaniment to the picnic/roast but whether or not you'll hear any great jazz seems to be a matter of chance/luck.

The Herc simulator is proving to be even more addictive than the Concord sale. Just flown from RAF Lyneham over to Ireland then got lost somewhere over the Irish Sea. Tried out a few engine start routines en-route somewhere over the Lake District !

Wan't it Marvin Cabell? The original LP came out on Liberty and has been reissued as a 'rare groove' on LP and CD. I think it's OOP and it isn't on the Mosaic Select. Should be able to access some sound samples here: Accent -
Anyone else into playing Flight Simulator 2002/04 software? Just trying out Just Flight's C-130 Hercules simulation and I must admit, I'm impressed. These things have come a long way in the last few years. For anyone who knows the Herc you can even mess around with the overhead instrument panels and do a wee spot of in-flight refuelling. I also have Concorde Professional 'Limited Edition' on order so there's a risk I might be diverted indefinitely from jazz and the Org Board... Any recommendations for other great Flight Sim applications?

I've got a total allergy to pan pipes in shopping streets so that got my vote..

Fully agree re: the Wess. What a sleeper that 'Long Road' CD is (actually bought it full price ! - am I the only one?). Superbly recorded too and with great horn arrangements. Quite enjoy the Timmons Trios. Purchased in my last zwei batch, must give it another listen. -
A bit of classic British jazz tonight: Neil Ardley/Don Rendell/Ian Carr 'Greek Variations' (UK Columbia Lansdowne stereo) Don Rendell/Ian Carr 'Shades of Blue' (UK Columbia Lansdowne mono) Mike Westbrook 'Tyger' (RCA Red Label stereo)

As an aside - anybody else seen Steve White play live? At a West Coast Fest held at Newport Beach in 1999 they did a reunion of the Lighthouse All Stars. Steve White was in the crowd with sax case in hand, was called out and did several numbers. Caused a bit of a stir at the time as it was something of a rare and 'impromtu' performance. Quite a character, I recall and I enjoyed his performance. I'm looking forward to weizy sending me the Fantasy sale CD.

Hi John - guess it is, sorry. I'll clear it.
