  1. Argentina outwitted by the Germans. No classic and a disgraceful end.
  2. Did Melba do the horn arrangements for Freddie Hobbard's 'Hub Cap'? Those arrangements are awesome and sound very much like her style with the close, subtle harmonies. There's a picture of her on the LP in the studio at this session with Randy Weston so looks as if this is a strong possibility.
  3. Yep, hope it was a nice birthday !
  4. Great find at that price ! Does it have the booklet/insert?
  5. Sadly, I suspect bottom line economics is behind a lot of what is now happening at Ronnie's. £25 admission is outrageous and the new membership fees look stratospheric as well. Ronnie always gave musicians union members and students a price break mid-week, a gesture which was much appreciated by many. The last straw for me though has been to take the 'Jazz at Ronnie Scotts' magazine archive off-line before everyone had chance to download copies ! Talking of Keith Tippett - at least the Bath Fest had the good sense to present this most important musician this year in the splendor of the Georgian Guildhall.
  6. No problem ! I always thought that it this punchy start was quite deliberate and done for effect (the LP I have is a white label Contemporary). Really like that opening track !
  7. I believe Mobley did several weeks of residency at the club and also sorted out accomodation and other UK gigs for Hank. In fact Ronnie Scott has a huge Mobley fan (I've read that he owned many Mobley BN vinyl originals) and his own style of playing was very strongly influenced by Hank.
  8. Starts straight away into the theme with Simmons and Donald in unison on the original LP. Quite abrupt.
  9. But why have they taken away the archive of 'Jazz at Ronnie Scots' magazine from their website? That was a useful resource. Used to be free but now you have to pay a fortune for it. Sign of the times..
  10. It was originally broadcast on BBC TV back in the 1970s - a classic. Still one of the best things the BBC has ever done with a masterful performance by Derek Jacobi. The series was really a series of plays - hence the lack of any action/battle scenes. Quite a lavish budget for the times though, as I remember. I must buy the DVDs for this one. Also the George Smiley stuff..
  11. Stan Tracey/Bobby Wellins 'Jazz Suite Inspired By Under Milk Wood' (UK Columbia Lansdowne mono) Tubby Hayes 'Return Visit' (UK Fontana stereo) Kenny Wheeler & John Dankworth Orchestra 'Windmill Tilter' (UK Fontana stereo)
  12. Bleedin' arseholes. MG Seconded.. Where does this bunch of 'forever on tour' delinquents get their money and perpetual time off work from anyway? This place is pleasantly quieter without them.
  13. I've told this story prevously in the BNBB but to put into context just how low-key Joe was in the early 80s on a visit I made to Germany to see friends I was taking a look at a high-school magazine brought home by one of the family and there was an advert for a school concert by Joe Henderson for something like 5 DM admission ! This was a school in a very rural/low key place too. I'll bet it was totally brilliant - of course it had already been and gone by the time I saw the mag. My reaction at the time was one of total and utter amazement. He was still pretty well unknown by the public at large when I saw him in Toronto back around 1990. Never forget that incredibly 'foggy' sound he got on 'Recorda Me' from his old Selmer. By then though I think the word was just starting to spread.
  14. How about that George Braith 'Musart'?
  15. Sounds like a sure-fire bet to me !
  16. Good words !
  17. At last - 'Inner Glow' gets to see the light of day again, beyond the ridiculously rare Japanese King vinyl...
  18. But why the heck didn't they include 'Tokyo Live' and make it a full box? Will we ever in this Millenium get to see 'Tokyo Live' again? That is the question...
  19. Kenneth Wolstenholme !
  20. Just listening to this one the other day via the Milestone box. Fantastic box - this is exactly the sort of quality product that the 'Old' Fantasy (pre-Concord) excelled in and which may never once it goes OOP, I fear, see the light of day again (I hope I'm proved wrong on that one - and Andorran rip-offs don't count).
  21. She even helped out with an email request from me for a spare CD set box, in person. Big for such great customer service and a thanks for all that fantastic music issued in recent years on Fantasy/Prestige/Milestone.
  22. I picked up a copy of the 'Central Avenue Sounds' book from the Borders in Long Beach many years ago now, just after many of the musicians featured had appeared at the store (unfortunately I just missed the in-person signing - Jackie Kelso, Clora Bryant, Gerald Wilson, Buddy Collette). Was able to pick up one of the signed copies they left behind though (although it doesn't have Gerald's signature). A good read ! Also got hold of the Buddy Collette book - amazingly at half-price clearance sale at a store here in the UK. The Horace Tapscott biography is also a must-have.
  23. Are you banned from BC? Looks like Lateef and the Belmondos are playing the Northsea Fest over in Holland. Now this might just persuade me to hitch a lift on the Harwich ferry...
