  1. and the crap-rap from the UK :
  2. Here's Lordi, from Finland..
  3. It was the best comedy programme so far this year. The BBC1 coverage traditionally has a totally hilarious super-cynical commentary by Terry Wogan which points out the various voting cliques e.g. Former-USSR Block, Balkan, Viking, Iberian, Greek Islands etc. The whole thing ceased to be a real competition at least 10 years ago and is now a total joke. At least the Warhammer/AC/DC clones representing Finland did something half-way original (well - in Eurovision terms ) for once. And as for the Albanian 'suspenders' theme and the German cowboys.. The episode of Father Ted was not far at all from the truth. Who wants the expense of hosting this charade when you can let one of these quangos foot the bill. France and UK should always enter some crap so ensure it stays that way.
  4. J R Monterose 'The Message' (Jaro International stereo - heavy vinyl reissue, doesn't say but presumably by Fresh Sound?) Buddy Rich 'Buddy and Soul' (UK Liberty stereo)
  5. John - Was that the last Summer 1980 stint at Scotts with Marc Johnson and Joe LaBarbera? I caught 2 consecutive nights of that one. The early shows were packed out with the 'expense account' brigade and quite noisy but for the late shows there were no more than 12-15 congniscenti in the audience and he had everyone totally entranced. Unforgettable - and somehow (thank you Ronnie) I got a front row piano-side seat for the second evening.
  6. Up for this thread. Just listening to CDs 1 and 2 of 'The Complete Fantasy Recordings' box set. Superb stuff - the recordings for Fantasy seem to get lukewarm reviews from the likes of the Penguin Guide but for anyone on the fence with this set, I recommend it. The ideas are just flying off the fingers throughout. CD 9 also has a full edition of Marian McPartland's 'Piano Jazz' with Evans, looking forward to reaching that disk. Now need to get me 'The Last Waltz' and 'Secret Sessions' (Zweitausendeins....please... ).
  7. Sidney Bechet Complete Blue Note, CD#1
  8. No-one mentioned the collectable invoices yet?
  9. Big John Patton 'Oh Baby !' (BN NY USA stereo). On one of my regular Patton kicks at the moment ..
  10. Miles Davis 'Volume 2' (BN Lexington 10") Big John Patton 'Got A Good Thing Goin' (BN NY USA mono)
  11. This is one case where the Mosaic CD set format scores big time over original vinyl. Great music though, indeed !
  12. Cecil Taylor/Buel Neidlinger Candid LP1
  13. Presumably this is the same performance to that on Vol 12 of the 'Lost Quintets Tree', right?
  14. Your birthday present is in the mail !
  15. Thanks for the advisory !
  16. I have a black box room decoration theme.
  17. A couple of great goals there. Certainly the best FA Cup Final I have ever seen on TV (and I usually don't bother watching it). Critical opinion seems to be that this was the best final since at least the 1950s. Too bad West Ham threw it away on the penalty shoot-out though..
  18. Lee Morgan/Wayne Shorter Veejay, CD 1
  19. Very Happy Birthday , Tooter !
  20. Miles Davis 'In A Silent Way' LP set. JJ Johnson 'Columbia Studio Sessons' LP set.
  21. Really saddens me to hear that. Only saw him the once but it was very fine. As part of a group accompanying Teddy Edwards on a very rare NYC excursion. Numbing to think that both of these wonderful players, who were in great form that night, are no longer with us. Can't have been more than 5 years ago either. I'll put on the Blakey 'Jazz 625' video this weekend in remembrance.
  22. What sort of job is that?
  23. Johnny Dankworth Orchestra 'Full Circle' (Philips stereo). With Kenny Wheeler, Henry Lowther etc. John Zorn 'Spillane' (Electra Nonsuch). With Big John Patton.
  24. Just the other day watched again the Jazz 625 broadcast with Clark Terry/Bob Brookmeyer. Brookmeyer absolutely on top form in that performance (he must be one of the most consistent guys in jazz) and just over-running with ideas. What a great combination Terry and Brookmeyer were !
