  1. The CD definitely sounds better than the 'Rainbow Series' LP. Not one of the greatest recordings sound quality wise , I'm afraid, in either version. The music though is - very much in a 'Sonny's Dream - Birth of the New Cool' vein.
  2. Another 'future project' for my list... Anyone notice that Miles quotes 'Hello This is Joni' in the middle of Maiysha?
  3. Just listening to the first track of this gem. I agree that the sound is great and the band is absolutely on fire. Now if only there was some nice Japanese psychodelic day-glo UFO/angel cover art to go with it !
  4. Got this one on my radar too. Looks great !
  5. Anything from Lonnie Smith's 'Think' would be a good choice, also how about some George Braith? (perhaps a track from 'Two Souls In One').
  6. 'Peter Burman's Jazz Tete a Tete' (UK Columbia Lansdowne mono). With Johnny Scott's Quintet, Bill LeSage, Shake Keane. Kenny Clarke/Francy Boland 'The Golden Eight' (BN NY USA mono)
  7. Great place for jazz. I worked there for several months on assignment and ended up eating out and seeing jazz just about every night. The choice available and standard of performance was excellent. Not to mention the climate. Would drive me nuts living there tho'
  8. Art Blakey 'The Jazz Messengers At Cafe Bohemia Vol 2' (BN 47W63rd DG mono)
  9. By some strange quirk I have the Mosaic LPs, the Blue Note CD box and the Mosaic CDs. Picked up the Mosaic CD box for £10 in a second-hand shop, couldn't resist it. Box a little bit worn though. Sound on the Mosaic CDs is pretty nice.
  10. Just come back from seeing Lee Konitz with superb young Brit pianist Gilwyn Simcox and his trio. For the second half, Lawrence Cottle's big band with a fine, impromptu turn by vocalist Claire Martin. Great night ! Tristano/Konitz/Marsh Mosaic LPs will be on deck tomorrow.
  11. I will put money on it that Plastylite Blue Note pressings will last 1000 years !
  12. That Herbie Nichols booklet by Mosaic is their greatest ever - along with the Dean Benedetti. Essential !
  13. Weird - 'Topic Starter' on this thread seems to have been erased from the 'New Posts'. Has Jazzbo been made a non-person or something?
  14. There is significant overlap with the Debut 10CD set but some significant material that is not in the big box from John LaPorta, Kenny Dorham, Sam Most and Max Roach (with Mobley) - for those who don't have the individual CDs (ie. me). The booklet is also nice and supplements the Mingus 10CD book (it's totally different in content). Some nice pics too. I would recommend the Debut 4CD box - but then that's just my opinion. It's also nice as a sampler/appetizer for the big set.
  15. For the UK Org fraternity, this website is a good laugh and all too shockingly true. Chav Towns Translation:- Chav (English) = '(Young) Cheap White Trash' (US)
  16. CDs are great for convenience (unbeatable in that respect) but I love the way the vinyl sound really draws you in. And as for Blue Note deep grooves, they are in a league of their own. Vinyl lives !
  17. Holy £$&! - Time to sell up and buy some RVG CDs
  18. That would be my immediate first question too. Also - what were the circumstances of the Nilva recording with Big John Patton ('Soul Connection'). Was this a working group and how did he find the session, working with Big John.
  19. You got your 'Destination Out' from Frank Wolff direct, Brownie? That must add at least another $500 to the value. Certainly paid a heck of a lot less for my mono copies of each of these. Allan's '$200 on a good day' is about right I think.
  20. This is easily the highest I've seen this Jackie McLean original reach, brilliant though it is: Destination Out Could the 'highest bidder' really be Rudy Van Gelder?
  21. After one listen (very nice I might add) I have a case of 'baritone block'
