    Funny Rat

Also, a bit jewish, isn't it? Great disc. I didn't notice a Jewish element, but maybe I missed it. What did you notice? Was it Ashkenazi or Sephardic style? On the other hand, there definitely seems to be a Jewish element in this recent reissue: Shelly Manne - Steps to the Desert: Modern Jazz Versions Of Favorite Jewish & Israeli Songs (Contemporary) May 11 -- with Shorty Rogers, Teddy Edwards, Victor Feldman, Al Viola, Monty Budwig -- recorded in 1962; originally called "My Son the Jazz Drummer" -- includes four previously unissued bonus tracks
  4. Yes another reason to demand parental licensing...
  5. Good question. I had a feeling that Marie's gets a lot of promo CDs. Her business is near Los Angeles, isn't it?
  6. The English name of the same name? huh? Errr, I meant to write "the English play of the same name."

    Funny Rat

Yes, very nice! He performed the spiritual "Blessed Assurance" (which is on the above album) as his last piece at his March 26th solo performance in Philadelphia.
  9. I used to unwind at the end of the work day to the Arista double LP...
  10. Hmm, almost 14,000 CDs listed. Almost 3% of his feedbacks are negative or neutral. (And $3.95 shipping for first CD!)
  11. The tunes on "The Jaywalker" were composed for the English play of the same name.

    Elvin is dead

I've been listening to pieces of some of the Elvin interviews on WKCR and am impressed by how warm and personable he seemed. (Heck, he said he enjoyed playing with Ginger Baker -- Elvin was expecting a showdown, but said that Baker provided a conversation.)

  16. I wouldn't count on it. They'll probably have another release next year on SACD. How else will they get you to buy it a fifth time?
  17. I have a small batch of CDs from various labels for sale at bargain prices. All are new and sealed. 19. Pre-order both today! Larry Kart - Jazz in Search of Itself (Yale Univ. Press) Aug Dan Morgenstern - Living with Jazz: A Reader (Pantheon Books) Nov 6 -- 640 pages; edited by Sheldon Meyer
  20. The classical label? Is this their first Jazz release? I think so. But I think this was a commissioned composition, so I suppose it counts as a classical piece...
  21. OK, that makes sense. By the way, Bridge Records is due to release the Cecil & Mat Maneri recording later this month!
  22. Why were they required to do a tribute? I've seen the quintet twice in Philly & they gave great shows both times.
  23. LaPorta also recorded with Charles Mingus from 1954-55 & in 1960 and recorded albums as a leader for Debut and Fantasy in the mid-1950s.
  24. Never seat two music critics together. I'm glad I was seated further back for that one...
