It's seems pretty good. I've only had one listen a couple weeks ago; I'll have to give it another spin.
  3. I like Steve Kuhn quite a lot, but I'm not really sure I like the arrangements on this one. Of the older compositions on the CD, I like the solo or small group recordings better. This could had more of an edge...
  4. I saw an inexpensive copy of Jam Session (Fat Boy 268). Anyone know what this is? AMG lists: 1. Sweet Lorraine performed by Bechet / Rex Stewart 2. [Also, I have an extra copy of RCA France's "The Complete Sidney Bechet, Vol. 3&4 (1941)." Email or PM me for info or look here.]
  5. Somehow this thread made me think of Loudon Wainwright III's song about not having the blues, "I'm Alright": Woke up this morning, didn't feel that bad Last night was definitely not one of the worst I ever had Ate a nice dinner, drank a few drinks Didn't think about you baby no matter what you think Went back to my hotelroom I went straight to bed Didn't moan, didn't cry and I did not wish I was dead I'm alright I'm alright Yeah I'm alright baby I'm alright without you Woke up this morning, didn't have the blues So I put on my tubesocks, laced up my running shoes Went down to the reservoir to jog a mile or two Didn't take about our love and I wasn't missing you Went back to my hotelroom took a few phonecalls Clean sheets on a made up bed and artwork on the wall I'm allright I'm allright Yeah I'm alright baby I'm alright without you Woke up this afternoon and I sat up in the bed There was a gnawing in my gut and a poundin' in my head So I went to the bathroom, to the medicinechest There was sleepin'pills and razorblades and all the rest But I was in control baby I was so relaxed I found myself my dental floss, my favourite kind - unwaxed I'm alright I'm alright Yeah I'm alright baby I'm alright without you

    Horace Parlan?

Sad to hear. I just happened to spin a few of his SteepleChase releases recently -- some nice listening there...
  10. It doesn't look like Verve ever did a two-CD version of the 2 LP Monk tribute. Another excuse to hook up a turntable.

This is a phenomenal record. Larry Stabbins was a major revelation for me (influences of Steve Lacy and Evan Parker are there, but overall a original and powerful voice). Tippett and Moholo are in top form and really gel well with each other, and the music is very diverse (from some subtle melodic playing to really intense blowing). Emanem released a solo saxophone disc, Monadic from Larry Stabbins last year. I liked it a lot. (I wrote a capsule review of the disk, which you can read here.)

  13. Is this one available anyone in the States?
  14. I remember when it happened to me with John Coltrane. It was with my second or third listening of the double LP, "The Other Village Vanguard Tapes." (Impulse! 9325)
  15. Nels Cline plays guitar on the CD.
  16. Yes, bad editing! Here's the corrected listing from Jazzmatazz: Louis Smith Quintet - Louisville (SteepleChase) Mar 9 -- Louis Smith (trumpet), Jon Gordon (alto sax), Michael Cochrane (pno), Calvin Hill (bass), and Jeff Hirshfeild (drums); recorded April, 2003

    Enrico Rava

Enrico Rava Quintet - Easy Living (ECM) Mar 16 -- with Gianluca Peterella on trombone, Stefano Bollani on piano, Rosario Bonaccorso on bass and Roberto Gatto on drums
  23. Hey, I appreciate all the nice comments. Some not-so-fun things are happening with family stuff in my non-Internet life, so this isn't the most fun birthday I've had, but I'll survive. (Nothing life threatening.) I've been trying to keep Jazzmatazz maintained and haven't had enough extra time to keep up with the site regularly, but hope to have more time to do so in the future. And, hey, after not getting out all Fall, I managed to see a couple concerts this month!
