  1. "Blind Man Blues" - a 2 CD compilation of recordings by blind blues musicians. "This 2CD set celebrates the triumph of musical talent over the adversity of blindness and extreme poverty, the results of which being some of the rawest blues tracks you will ever hear. This is no frills stripped down stuff with iconic performances from the likes of Blind Boy Fuller, Sleepy John Estes, Bo Carter, Blind Willie McTell, Ray Charles and many more."
  2. Portrait: A Life of Thomas Eakins by William S. McFeely An interesting moderate sized biography. Enjoyable read.
  3. What are these? LPs that preceeded the Storyville 2CD sets? Or are these the original non-commercial transcription discs? I believe these are the original LP series that issued Treasury shows. The Storyville series is reissuing these on CD and add bonus material. I have eight of the Storyville sets.
  4. Let us know if you find out more...
  5. A quick search shows that these are AFRS re-broadcasts, mostly compiled from a number of domestic broadcasts from the ABC and Blue Networks. I wonder if these overlap the Treasury shows? This link has information on some of them. There may also be some information in the DEMS Bulletins.

  11. Haven't gotten in CDs autographed. I did find a copy of "To Be or Not to Bop" in a library sale that was autographed by both Dizzy Gillespie and co-author Al Fraser. (And I did get a few SF books autographed back when I was a fan.)
  12. I found an older study of medical costs for helmeted vs. non-helmeted riders. The conclusion was that not wearing a helmet has an average increase of 60% in hospital cost. There weren't many more fatalities, but the injuries were much more severe. This is the opposite of what Dan projected. Motorcycle helmet use and injury outcome and hospitalization costs from crashes in Washington State. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1380358/ Am J Public Health. 1996 January; 86(1): 41–45. Abstract OBJECTIVES. The incidence, type, severity, and costs of crash-related injuries requiring hospitalization or resulting in death were compared for helmeted and unhelmeted motorcyclists. METHODS. This was a retrospective cohort study of injured motorcyclists in Washington State in 1989. Motorcycle crash data were linked to statewide hospitalization and death data. RESULTS. The 2090 crashes included in this study resulted in 409 hospitalizations (20%) and 59 fatalities (28%). Although unhelmeted motorcyclists were only slightly more likely to be hospitalized overall, they were more severely injured, nearly three times more likely to have been head injured, and nearly four times more likely to have been severely or critically head injured than helmeted riders. Unhelmeted riders were also more likely to be readmitted to a hospital for follow-up treatment and to die from their injuries. The average hospital stay for unhelmeted motorcyclists was longer, and cost more per case; the cost of hospitalization for unhelmeted motorcyclists was 60% more overall ($3.5 vs $2.2 million). CONCLUSIONS. Helmet use is strongly associated with reduced probability and severity of injury, reduced economic impact, and a reduction in motorcyclist deaths.

  19. Oddball would be an euphemism, I can't imagine why the hell you'd dance to this rather challenging music, was tired just listening to it ... Alankin's Law: there will be one (or more) oddball dancer at every concert.
