  1. In spite of several blown calls on both sides and late flags everywhere, Niners FINALLY polish off the Packers and in Green Bay.
  2. Makes me wonder how Young Frankenstein, High Anxiety or Blazing Saddles didn't crack the top ten. Though I did notice Naked Gun, another Leslie Nielsen comedy, was ranked #3.
  3. OK. Pablo Sandoval got four pitches in four ABs? Must be a record of some sort. Personally, I think he's channeling Pedro Feliz; the undisputed King of swinging at the first pitch.
  4. Classic Leslie Nielsen and a seriously funny movie
  5. Lincecum came through even with a rough start. Giants win, 5-2 over the Dodgers. I was sorry to read that Billingsly is out for the season with elbow problems. Too bad, the guy was on cruse control and a huge thorn in the Giants' backside all season. Cain on the mound tonight.
  6. And after the Feds went after Bonds, did that stop the PEDs?
  7. Highlight of the week....maybe the year: Pablo Sandoval, Brandon Crawford Circus Catch
  8. The lastest way to cheat is to micro-dose PEDs. Tests can't pick it up. They can hang Armstrong's butt from a flagpole, but that still won't end the doping. The sport just needs to cut its losses and move on; nothing good will come of this stuff.
  9. 1999? Samples that are 13 years old? How reliable can they be at this point? This isn't a murder or rape case. Seems to me that at some point the statute of limitations should take precedence. Either that or call this what it is: A witch hunt fueled by politics/jealousy. Please note: I seriously do not give a damn if Armstrong did juice. So did everybody else in a sport which has become so exceedingly difficult it encourages doping just to keep up. Maybe we should just cut to the chase and ban cycling as a sport because the sponsors have made it so nobody can consistatntly compete at such ridiculously high levels without PEDs. Either that or stop all this foolishness. Enough already.
  10. need a SS. Yeah? Yeah...they got one too....the personality challenged(Just like his older bro) Stephen Drew..but I may have been wrong about really needing one, they are really on a roll...Baltimore and the A's are the most unlikely teams to be playing so well coming into September... I dunno. The A's have been pretty steady all season.
  11. Nice way for 19 year-old kid to break in, I'd say
  12. Not sure how anybody could conclude in the article that this moron is a Democrat. "News blind" is a righty schtick [you know, that big, scary Liberal media] I hope he gets some serious time in the local pen for hitting his girlfriend..
  13. Looks like the A's are just plain on fire right now! A 7 game winning streak including a laugher yesterday; 20-2 over the BoSox. Ouch!
  14. Well, being a HS teacher myself I didn't think it appropriate for me to chime in. Nevertheless, and in deference to Joel's request, I can point out several teachers I had who inspired me to become a teacher as well as a better student of Life. One in particular was my 4th Grade teacher, Mrs. O'Neil. Coming from a lower-middle income family with constant marital strife and other related family issues, I was not heading in the best of directions. Mrs. O'Neil saw that in me and took me under her wing. She not only instilled in me the academic discipline I was lacking, but she also made me feel like I was a somebody; a person worthy of good things. For the very first time in my life I started getting good marks in school and was far happier. I had a minor set-back that Spring when the school bully jumped me from behind and I let the rage I felt from home come out and beat the living daylights out of him. Mrs. O'Neil and three other kids pulled me off of him. Then, she went to bat for me in the Principal's office. She knew that if I got suspended, the beatings and verbal abuse at home would have been far worse than anything the school could do to me. As a result, the bully got a three day pass and I got to stay at school. Her humanity and concern for my safety won out over arbitrary school rules regarding fighting. I honestly felt loved by a human being. To this day, I have felt that if she could do that for me, then I want to be that teacher for students of mine who just never got an even break in Life. In short, I saw this as my calling even at the age of nine. And now, after 34+ years in the biz, I can say without boasting that I have been that guy for a legion of kids. It means more to me than the academic fields I am charged with teaching. Even as an adult, I still remember Mrs. O'Neil and the care she showed to me and I still love coming to school for that very reason. And I can't wait to see my knuckleheads when we get back after the Labor Day holiday. Thank you, Mrs. O'Neil.
  15. I read in the news today that the replacement refs totally blew a call in the Pats game. Embarrassing: Can't get it right
  16. Not good.
  17. Is anyone surprised with fanatics like this? I am curious. Since it's apparent that it's okay to in essence to say "Fuck all the French" on this board. Is it okay on this board for any other liked minded to say the equivalent with anyone of color, all those who are Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Homosexual,...maybe even say let's turn Iran and the 78 million people who live there into a grease spot (oh yeah, the same "fanatic" made it very clear he's all for that as well.)....or is it basically some sort of "Freedom Fries" thing which makes it okay to say "Fuck the 65 million people who live in France"? Blue Train -- You've got to reach back to 2009 and dredge this up and then drape it in some "general" point about are we OK here with disparagement of "anyone of color, all those who are Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Homosexual" etc. in order (or so it seems to me) to get at someone you have a long unhappy/angry history with on another board? Yeesh. I'll leave this post of yours up for a while so we can all walk around it and wonder at what must be going here. And I was quoting Lance Armstrong then added a disclaimer of my own. BTW, not that it matters, but very recently I have been getting infected e-mails which a friend on my contact list tipped me off about. Hm. Exactly. I patiently await PEDs investigation of the NFL. Right. Like that is going to happen.
  18. No matter to me. Whatever he does from here on out is gravy. I worship the guy for pitching the Game 6 shutout gem to close out the hated Jankees in the 2003 WS! I was happy about that one, too. After the Dodgers, the Yankees are my least favorite team.
  19. For the record...Beckett got shelled last night. Not a good sign.
  20. Do they let crusty old HS teachers in this club?
  21. I'd love to know what Mr. McCourt was like as a teacher! He was a happy-go-lucky guy who went the extra mile to help his students (including me). And yes, he was somwhat legendary around the sacred halls of Stuy High, at least while I was there. Students would often go out of their way to call out his name from across a crowded corridor during class changes, and he always acknowledged the attention. Thanks! I'm gonna read Teacher--or whatever it's called---next. I couldn't put Angela's Ashes down. Teacher Man...and it is very good, IMHO.
  22. Well, if in the view of those who have some knowledge of the man and his background, he significantly shaped the telling of the story of his life to fit those prevailing, saleable stereotypes. Wouldn't be the first time something like that has happened. Good point and I agree. I just wonder why any embelishment [something authors do all the time] should be a source of so much anger. If his father was a drunk, then he was. Nobody thinks of Irish stereotypes when referring to James Joyce who was also a drunk. If the Mother disavowes the book [or so we are told] could it be because of not wanting that embarassment out in public? A legit concern, but at what point do we allow for adult children to write about such dificult times of their own childhood? Embelishments notwithstanding. Very cool! I'll have to relay that to my English students
  23. The only book I have read by Frank McCourt was Teacher Man. Therein, is enough anti-Catholic sentiment to test even the Pope's tolerance. Why isn't this book a source of derision? Now, how a book about his life is castigated with regard to this and alleged Irish stereotypes is baffling. If it is his life, how can anyone dispute it?
