  1. Larry: Just let me say how terribly sorry I am to hear about your wife--I had no idea, and if missed other mentions here, I apologize. After a life of listening to music nearly nonstop whenever and wherever possible, after a bad breakup about two years ago, I too could not listen to anything. Similar symptoms: after a few minutes into a record or CD, I'd just shut the damn thing off. Couldn't figure it out. Now my life is in a MUCH better place, and I'm "back"--music all the time, nonstop. Blah blah blah--I guess my point is that there was definitely a depression component to how I was feeling when I experienced what you did, and it probably wouldn't hurt to talk to someone about it. Or I guess I'm saying, inartfully, that I've experienced the same thing, as a symptom for stuff therapy helped to work out (oh, and I had no problem with live music either). Your mileage may vary, but seriously--there's great value in some third party/objective points of view. Good luck, and again, I'm so sorry about your wife.
  2. Picked up the Farmer, Gillespie, and Turrentine today at Broad Street Borders for a total of 26 bucks. Can't believe these are only priced at Borders for 13.99 each--then there's the 40% coupon. Put the Hutcherson on hold to pick up tomorrow (only three at a time with this coupon). I am seriously grooving out to Aztec Suite right now. Wow, what charts. Great stuff.
  3. I just don't even know what to say. All my best to you, Jim, and the rest of your family.
  4. PM on the way for Tristano in case the previous one doesn't work out...
  5. Duke Ellington Reprise Studio Recordings Disc 1
  6. And does anyone know what that first 15-second (prior to the abrupt cut) clip of him singing "amen" in a church is from?
  7. Dave Brubeck (and quartet) is playing tonight at the Kimmel Center. Anyone going? Brubeck was my entree to jazz via my father (when I was 4!), so there's a real soft spot in my heart for the man and his music (and believe it or not this is the first time I'll have ever seen him perform!). I know others here have different views of his work, but thought I'd drop the dime...
  8. Lon--have you tried Facebook? Seriously. I found a great friend from fifth grade, whom I haven't seen since 1985, on there.
  9. OMG, amazing. Thanks for posting this. And that spinning piano!
  10. NEVER MIND, I called--their online schedule must be out of date. It is George Braith. George Braith! i think I'll hit up the 10:00 saturday show (three sets/night). Anyone else going?
  11. I'm glad someone brought this back up. I'll be in Manhattan this weekend, and the Lenox Lounge only lists the following for tonight/tomorrow night: Fri. 11th & Sat.12th Tenor Sax KEITH LOFTIS QUARTET Young Lions Of Jazz MG, where did you hear this?
  12. Completely agree. Going to go spin Unit Structures now. Thanks for the reminder.
  13. Good stuff, penzeys, but you can get the same, and better, for a fraction of the price here: World Market - Seattle
  14. Please don't stop. I know little about this music, but love watching, listening, and learning. Keep the posts coming, please.
  15. Is that what the kids are calling it these days?
  16. Awesome, bearded dude! Seriously, great performance. I remember reading you played with them--must have some great memories from those times! I spied a Woody clip of Four Brothers (on the related videos to the right) featuring Frank Tiberi, Dave Reikenberg, Jerry Pinter and Mike Brignola, as well as a younger Free For All (spotted between the tenor and bari) dutifully playing his brass hits. Those were the days baby!
  17. That's often the case at restaurants here in Philadelphia. When the chef/kitchen staff know what they're doing it's terrific! I haven't lifted a salt/pepper shaker in months. You should see the bitching on the food blogs about people who are incensed about "the kitchen's attempts to control what they eat". Give me a break. If it's done right, you shouldn't need a damn shaker on the table! Aloc--so delighted to hear that.
  18. Fabulous. Of course, take it all the way back, Jim, and we're likely third cousins fifteen times removed or some such!
  19. I couldn't have said it better. I've been looking for several of these for a long time, and this post was like manna from heaven. As I told David--a very fine and generous offer. These sets will be cherished and in heavy rotation.
  20. But...what about "Livin' for the Beat" ca. 1984? Actually, not a bad record for it's time...
  21. PM sent on Duke Ellington Reprise (5 CDs) scuffing on top edge of box, scratch on rear $135. Woody Herman Capitols (6 CDs) 150. Johnny Hodges '56-'61 (6 CDs) 125. Illinois Jacquet '45-'50 (4 CDs) 95. Stan Kenton Capitols '43-'47 (7 CDs) 155. Thanks!
  22. Not unlike Chuck's dinner from a few nights back--leftover prime rib (cooked barely rare, meat from Lobel's in NYC), gorgonzola/almond polenta, carrots, and a glass or two of spanish red. Easter dinner redux--yum!
  23. New York Philharmonic playing Bach's St. Matthew Passion. Should be amazing.
  24. PM sent on Cannonball Adderley Quintet AT THE LIGHTHOUSE (Capitol Jazz) Lee Morgan STANDARDS (Blue Note) Duke Ellington ELLINGTON UPTOWN (Legacy) Thanks!
