Art Pepper - Complete Village Vanguard Sessions
Peter Johnson replied to mikelz777's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Finally--"Shipped!" -
Surfacing this thread because a close bassist friend is coming to town and we'd hoped to catch Jymie Merritt at his gig at The Prime Rib. Sadly, I just called, and he no longer plays there. Does anyone have information about his current schedule? I have emails out to Odean Pope's and Mike Merritt's managers (both referenced above) and I'll post back if I hear anything. Other clues appreciated, however!

He first became known in the early '90s as the pianist in the critically-acclaimed David S. Ware Quartet, and soon began leading his own dates - often including Ware-bandmate and bassist William Parker - and recording a number of duets with a various musicians, from the legendary Roscoe Mitchell to violinist Mat Maneri. In about 1993, just having graduated from college, my jazz field of vision was relatively narrow, consisting of much of "the obvious" from family upbringing (Time Out, KOB, etc.) and some slightly deeper stuff from exposure in music courses (Ellington, Strayhorn, Bitches Brew). Needless to say, "discovering" Something Else would then have been transcendant; "discovering" AEC--well, not so much. That all changed one Saturday morning when I went into Bop Street Records in Seattle (some of you may know/have been there; it was in the Ballard neighborhood and not sure if it still exists). The owner, Dave, was notorious for not pricing his records until point of purchase, having stacks and stacks of unsorted wax everywhere, and having the odd gem hidden among the crap. Apropos of nothing that morning, he walked over to his beat up Thorens turntable and put (what I later discovered was) Volume 1 of the Golden Circle recordings on. I was MESMERIZED! Now that I know what I do about this music, I'm not ashamed of the the following exchange, about 15 minutes into the first side: Me: "What the hell is this?" Dave: "Ornette Coleman." Me: "Who?" [seriously.] Dave: "Dude. Here, just take the record and read about it." So he handed me the jacket, and of course, the first thing I noticed was, "Blue Note! I must own this!" The second thing I noticed was "Volume 1". Oh man, there was more of this? Then I noticed, as was mentioned above, that the sound just JUMPED out of the speakers--izenson, moffett, Ornette cutting through everything with his particular blend of sane madness (remember, I had NEVER heard anything like this before). It was a transcendant listening experience, one of those "big ones" you never forget. Long story short, I asked him how much he would sell me this original press of Golden Circle Volume 1 for. "I'll let you have it for five bucks--it's pretty wrecked," he said with a twinkle in his eye. It was not beat at all--it was in nearly perfect condition. It might go without saying that I have sense gone on to adore Ornette's music and much else from the "genre", and his curmudgeonly ways aside, I'll always be grateful to Dave at Bop Street for turning me on to it.

Reptet Announces 2009 West Coast Tour
Peter Johnson replied to Johnny E's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Maybe try both? I have to admit (ashamed) I've never been to Chris', so I don't know what the crowds are like. I'll reach out to a contact at the art museum. What time frame are you thinking about? Well, the Art After 5 does Latin on the first Friday of the month (which is when we'd be in the Philly area). Alan from Chris Jazz Cafe might be interested and I'm supposed to call him on Monday. Do you think Chris would be a betrer place to play than Tritone? We've already played the Tritone twice. I'm thinking we should try a different place. -

How about the Philadelphia Museum of Art for their "art after 5" series? organissimo did this, to what I recall was an enthusiastic reception. Tritone is, as you know, great... -
PM sent on Davis Blackhawk. Why I don't have this already is another question.

What's your technique for toning it down? I've never been able to do so successfully. -
Don't really know about this guy, what his music sounds like, or anything, but hey--Uri Caine (not tomorrow, but in the past): Neil Leonard Friday, February 27, 2009 at 5:00 PM Philadelphia Art Museum Neil Leonard is known for his unique approach to composition and improvisation. His ensemble has featured Robin Eubanks and Uri Caine, among others, and his collaborative works with visual artist María Magdalena Campos-Pons were exhibited at the 49th Venice Biennial.

Miles Davis Columbia Box Sets
Peter Johnson replied to Peter Johnson's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Bev, that's exactly what I'm looking for. If you find it, do kindly post a link or the text! I love the boxes for "study" purposes, but sometimes I just want to listen to the albums. -
I'm wondering if anyone has taken the time to go through the various Miles Davis Columbia box sets to replicate the original issues of the music. For example, I'm fairly certain that, for IASW, the original album comprised tracks 3 and 4 (shhh/peaceful and in a silent way/it's about that time) from disc 3 of the box. But that one's easy--the 1965-1968 quintet, on the other hand, spreads tracks from multiple albums over the discs, and they're not necessarily in original album order. Has anyone taken the time, as I believe couw did with the Bill Evans riverside box, to put together lists to "recreate" the original albums from these sets? I thought I'd ask before taking the time to do it in case someone else has done the work already. If nobody has, then I'll do it, and will be happy to post the results for those who are interested. Thanks!
