  1. Wow. If anyone ever wondered about the value of this place, they need only read this thread. HOW MANY TIMES does one get to witness the likes of Lawrence Kart, Chuck Nessa and Jim Sangrey (and others) debate and discuss the musicianship of Tyrone Washington and Joe Henderson, with such a combined degree of knowledge, understanding and historical perspective? Not bloody many times! Thank you, all of you, for your insights on this music we all hold so close to our hearts and minds.
  2. Outstanding, John!
  3. If you don't like my driving, call 1-800-eat-shit!!!
  4. I love Fridays! (just in general, although it might be a good caption!)
  5. "I KNEW I shouldn't have bought a French car!"
  6. "Lift Every Voice" sans vocals. That record is seriously stressing me out!!!
  7. Or Gravy Train--we can watch sweet Poppa Lou chowin' down!
  8. Back at the Krypton board there was a great list of the Rare Groove issues. Did anyone save it, and has anyone updated it with the most recent issues (Gary Bartz, among others)? I looked and looked here, but couldn't find it. Thanks in advance!
  9. I'll be there for both sets on Wednesday night if anyone's going (my wife is on call Thurs-Sun and she really wants to see Poppa Lou). But I'd be happy to come up for any other show...who's in?
  10. Oh my god you guys are killing me!!!
  11. I was wondering where Elvin was...
  12. Sadly, that's what I kind of figured. Still, though--someone might know something...
  13. I purchased One Night with Blue Note and am in the process of digesting it. All of this talk about watching musicians on film got me wondering, though--has anyone ever heard of the existence of Super 8 (or 16mm, or whatever) footage of any Blue Note or other sessions at RVG's place? We've got the Wolff photos, but man...think of the possibilities. I should think early movie cameras made noise, so wouldn't have been present...but on the other hand, Wolff's camera must have made a shutter sound. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing? But, more likely, wouldn't we have heard by now if any footage existed?
  14. ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE!!!! Strong, strong work!!!
  15. Myself included... But in my case (and, I suspect, others' as well) this can be a product of unforseen time constraints, rather than the length of material. Throw my hat in the ring as saying 2 discs is fine; I've really enjoyed this and think it should be up to the compiler.
  16. Into Somethin' and Gettin' Around look amazing at size. Thanks for posting!
  17. Absolutely brilliant! Rolling o's--who'd'a thunk it!
  18. Mark, would you mind disclosing your source? A few years back, I bought four 12x12 wooden frames from Aaron Bros. in Seattle. They're not on the east coast, and I'm trying to find more! Thanks in advance. PJ
  19. Thanks...JOHN (duuuhhhhrrrrrrr...my bad! )
  20. Please let us know what you hear about this printshop. I can think of a few albums I'd like to have done that way! PJ
  21. You're missing the perspex headlight covers, Tone... [obligatory automotive reference for Catesta]
  22. Hans, may I make Horace my new avatar? Pretty please? PJ
  23. Thanks Dad! My dad was a big Brubeck fan in college, buying all the "Time" records as they were released. One day he put on "Unsquare Dance" (from Time Further Out)--that's the song that starts with a bass riff and finger snaps (it's in 5/4 time) before it gets really crazy with drumming on the rim and a sparse piano solo and ends with either Eugene Wright or Morello laughing at the fact that they actually made it through the song. Anyway, I was about ten (and taking piano lessons with STRAIGHT UP stuff, Bach minuet in G, etc.) when my dad put that on, and said, "try to tap your feet to this!" I was hooked. Hooked again in college with Jazz appreciation (common theme), and walking into MY room you'd either hear Miles/Evans Porgy and Bess or Duran Duran (did I just admit that?). Hooked again in grad school when I found a first-press copy of Blue Train in the bins...and never looked back.
  24. Hi all. The RVGs have reawakened my interest in Bud, being the phenomenal player that he is. I've transcribed in the past--LABORIOUS!!!--and after listening to Autumn in New York, was wondering if anyone has ever used and/or can recommend any published note-for-note piano transcriptions of his work. Thanks for your thoughts! Peter J
  25. Yeah, baby--let's talk about some tasty WAX!!!
