  1. Right ON! I can't wait to dig into this record. But that line drawing...
  2. Hey Tom, Ahhh, Seattle. I miss it! I grew up in Portland, and lived in Seattle for a few years after grad school. Now Philly! Ping me offline and I'll give you whatever information you'd like to know--restaurants, recreation, you name it. pjjohnson@htts.com P.S. I know, we still need to work out the Jewel in the Lotus trade...we can figure that out while we're at it. [edited to correct my OWN email address... )
  3. I really like both of those albums. Haven't listened to them in a while--I'll have to dust them off this weekend and give them a spin. Alas, the same problem with no LP-->CDR capability here, but I'd be interested in hearing what people have to say about them. PJ
  4. As the recipient: Hank Mobley "Curtain Call"!!! As the provider: Bobby Hutcherson "Oblique"!!! (although, unfortunately, I don't have CDR capability, I'd be happy to "loan out" my copy to someone who would be running the tree).
  5. Hi all-- Just got a flyer in the mail for this upcoming show at the auditorium at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. Features Avery Sharpe on bass and Aaron Scott on drums. It's at 8:00 p.m. on 5/2/03 (Friday); $20, $10 for students. Go to the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society website for details. Anyone else going? Peter
  6. Close..."lift" if used in the British english sense. Could be "Elevator to the Scaffold" or "Elevator to the Gallows."
  7. [guilty pleasure] Always loved the video for A-ha's "Take on Me" [/guilty pleasure]
  8. This is a bizarrely-timed thread--I've been listening to a TON of this kind of stuff lately, most recently spinning all of my Dream Academy CD's. In a further pop-vein, I've recently ordered the final "Curiosity Killed the Cat" record (they were called "Curiosity" by then, released only in Japan) and a record by Richard Darbyshire (former lead singer of "Living in a Box," blue-eyed soul if I ever heard it). The other day I had all six Thompson Twins CDs in my shopping cart at half.com, and I had to say, "GET A HOLD OF YOURSELF, MAN!" I don't know whether it's been the war on, general "heaviness" about, or what, but I've needed to just "tune in, turn on, and drop out" in a pop kind of way. Jazz hasn't been really "doing it" for me, and I'm doing my every five year return to the eighties thing, I guess. Sounds like I'm not alone! Mingus still works though, and I WILL post my review soon... Thank you, whoever started this great thread!
  9. CJ, you might be referring to Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, which does have (intentional) splices that were equally noticable on the LP and were actually discussed in the liner notes to the 20-bit reissue....
  10. COMPLETELY dig I wanna get funky. But in that King sub-genre, it's definitely in second place (in my book) to "The Pinch," which was sadly reissued as "The Blues Don't Change." Awesome, awesome greasy horn, and hilarious to boot. "She was one baaaaad motor-scooter." Have you heard it? And the cover! How could they replace this: with this when they reissued the damn thing?
  11. Oh no, Jeff--looks like we've got a musical difference! I actually like Places and Spaces. But I have to admit, I'm not sure whether I like it in a "rare groove" sense, or in a "jazz" sense, if that makes sense. I can appreciate it for what it is (although I hate the song "Dominoes"). Still, despite the synth stuff, I thought you might like some of the 70's ensemble horn work, since you're a fan of Albert King's Stax records. I ought to listen to Places and Spaces and see exactly what I like about it.
  12. John Tapscott said, "I don't have the Mingus on CD, but I think I have it on vinyl. I'll check tonight." I know what you mean. I've got to listen to Mingus x 5 on my SACD version, rather than the CD reissue. Damn, it's not April 1 anymore.
  13. Agree. Let's not have a lot of debate over it. Person picking nominates the next to pick. Period. Of course, threads like this one are great to get ideas...I chose CJ after he said (in another thread) that Lee Morgan L@LH would be a great album of the week. "So do I," I thought, and he got the nod. Of course, he might surprise us and pick "A New Perspective!"
  14. Here's the article. It's heavy towards the end , but a must-read, and completely fascinating.
  15. Glad you like it! I'm hoping some folks with expansive Mingus knowledge will do some comparisons with his earlier versions of the songs on this record. If memory serves me correctly, the entire thing was performed largely without so much as a lead sheet--maybe a few chord structures, but usually with Mingus shouting the directions and changes from his bass. There are some SICK, unscripted moments on this record.
  16. It must have gone off into the ether... Here it is!
  17. Greetings! As discussed previously, this is the continuation of our thread series naming albums of the week for everyone to listen to with a critical (or merely pleasured) ear. For the week of April 6-April 12, I nominate Charles Mingus' ambitious, large-ensemble work on Impulse! from 1963: Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus (click to buy), which has been reissued and is in print! Highlights (your mileage may, of course, vary) include: - In/out solos by Eric Dolphy; - Screaming noir saxophone by Charlie Mariano; and - New versions of Better Get Hit in Yo' Soul (from Mingus Ah Um, and probably earlier versions) and Haitian Fight Song (retitled "II B.S.") (from The Clown, and also probably earlier versions) I hope you all post reviews describing whatever this record does for you (positive or negative, everything or nothing), and that a renewed listen makes you dance, sing, grab a glass of wine...well, you get my drift. I'll try to post my review Sunday evening. Part of the deal is that I nominate the person who chooses next week's AOW--that person is CJ Shearns. Enjoy! _______________ Past Albums of the Week Donald Byrd - "Byrd in Hand" Wayne Shorter - "The All-Seeing Eye"
  18. shit...I thought I just created my post in a new thread, but I CAN'T FIND IT! Maybe it takes a minute to show up...
  19. Brownie, do you have the set mentioned at the link above? How is it? I'd love to pick this up... Thanks for your thoughts. PJ
  20. Okay Africa, you're the sort of "overseer" of this project...shall I make the selection known? Is Thursday too early? Thanks! PJ
  21. Is it possible that people think they're buying loc'd after dark? That mixup would produce a reaction much different than mine!
  22. Gary, I know exactly what you mean re "A New Perspective." I'll never forget my first listen..."Buh dot duh daaaah...dah dah dot". What the ?!@# I kind of got over it, but I'm still kind of lukewarm to the session. "I'm Still Trying to Get Home" was a weak follow-up, IMHO...
  23. That's funny, I didn't know this had become the politics forum.
