  1. Oh God, SS is turning over in his grave! They must have used the 32Jazz graphics department ! Or Audio Fidelity's.
  2. OK. BillF, y`ve changed your avatar? Those were the days! Pretty crappy speakers back then. I imagine there's a lot of added hiss from those ocean sounds.
  3. Ben Webster - Remember (Dutch Mercury). I have this on CD as "Big Ben Time". It's a nice swinging relaxed date from late in Ben's life (1967). I like most of this one. I could do without the organ tracks.
  4. I saw them in Newcastle a few weeks ago and wasn't impressed. A bit full of themselves, I thought.......and Joe Lovano wore his shirt outside his pants, never a good sign That's actually the style these days. My girls are constantly trying to get me to do this and I try every now & then but it just doesn't feel right. I usually last about halfway through the day before it gets tucked back in. Tomorrow night Maria Schneider's Jazz Orchestra is coming to Berklee. I can't wait. I've wanted to see/hear this band live for many years and just never connected. Not tonight! I bought these tickets when they went on sale and got the front row.
  5. Randy Marsh's dad Arno has a few CDs in their catalog.
  6. Thanks for stopping by. I seem to remember you at the old Blue Note bulletin board. Also, thanks for the link to the memorial at your website. I learned some things about your Dad that I never would have know otherwise. It's refreshing to read your personal recollections without any sugarcoating. He sounded a lot like my Dad.
  7. Tonight in Methuen, MA at The Sahara Jazz Club: Gary Smulyan in a trio with John Lockwood on bass and Ralph Peterson on drums. http://www.jockosjazz.com
  8. Kenny Barron - Golden Lotus (Muse). Nice date - killer lineup. I never saw this on CD. Did it ever make it?
  9. Just finished - Lionel Hampton - You Better Know It!!!! (Impulse!). ABC labels with Van Gelder stampers but has a nasty howl cut into it. Drop the needle and it's there. Are all of them like this? Again, it's cuttings like this that remind me why CDs were welcomed with open arms by this music fan. Now playing: John Coltrane - Settin' The Pace (Prestige). Nice blue label Van Gelder pressing that unfortunately sounds terrible. Rice crispies all over side one. Looks pretty good too. Bummer.
  10. One of Bob Blumenthal's favorites. It is a fun date.
  11. 7406 La Salle Avenue Los Angeles, CA 90047 Owner: JERRY D DECD OF WHITE EST Total land value: $145,000 (it was $59,872 in 2009) Total building value: $77,000 (it was $59,872 in 2009) Total value for property: $222,000 (it was $119,744 in 2009) Recording date: 09/07/2008 Year built: 1926 Effective year built: 1926 Area of property: 1,092 square feet Assessment for fiscal year: 2012/2013 Read more: http://www.city-data.com/los-angeles-county/L/La-Salle-Avenue-68.html#ixzz2yp2Vodm1 So Jerry is dead? Est on the end is never a good thing when you're trying to find someone by a property search.
  12. Joe just finished. Now playing: Mal Waldron - The Git Go - Live At The Village Vanguard (Soul Note). Woody Shaw and Charlie Rouse in the front line. What's not to like?
  13. Joe Van Enkhuizen - Back On The Scene (Criss Cross). Nice hard bop date of standards from an relatively unknown tenor player here in the US. Nothing to make you go "wow" but nothing to make go "eh" either. It's never made it to CD which is probably why there aren't many pictures of the cover on the web.
  14. It's too bad you don't live closer. I have an extra Pro-Ject Debut II with an acrylic platter and a Denon DL-160 cartridge that I would let you try and give you a good deal on it if you liked it. I just don't have any packing material for it right now. Kevin
  15. Now on, an album much more to my liking: Woody Shaw - Little Red's Fantasy (Muse). I've always enjoyed this date on CD. To be honest, this sounds great on vinyl. About the only negative would be the twangy bass sound.
  16. David Murray Trio - Sweet Lovely (Black Saint). This is not for me at all. It was in a cheapie bin so I figured I'd check it out. In a lot of places, it sounds like all three of these guys are playing different songs with different beats. And for some reason, I really don't dig this drummer.
  17. Steve Kuhn brings his trio to Scullers in Boston tonight. He is bringing Eric Alexander along as a "special guest".
  18. I don't know who dumped all this stuff. There were a whole bunch of unopened Blue Note CDs from Japan in the boxes too. The seller has already sold most of them. One was the extremely rare Hank Mobley Quartet CD. Sealed. I've never seen one of them sealed before.
  19. It looks like this stuff was found next to a dumpster in San Diego. It appears to be from a bunch of boxes of stuff from when they cleaned out Ruth Lion's apartment when she died. Michael Cuscuna is negotiating with the seller to see what he can do to get this stuff.
  20. Those photos look like Francis Wolff negatives. Mosaic got a copyright for the ones they have. If any of these are dupes, does the seller have to worry about that copyright?
  21. Alright, I might get some grief for this, but... I'm pretty sure Mnytime still posts regularly on this board. I've met Mnytime in real life (several times, actually) and see some posting patterns of a member here that are "unique" to the man I know/knew as Mnytime. I'm not going to "out" this poster, as I'm not 100% sure he actually is Mnytime (more like only 98% sure), and it's really his call to make that announcement anyway. I'm pretty sure I have the right username... isn't Mnytime the guy whose "brother" came onto the Blue Note board to announce that he had died in a car crash? We all tried to get his real name and the "brother" kept avoiding the question. It was truly bizarre.
  22. Whenever I see these old archive pages and see the name Mnytime, I wonder if he really is dead or if he was just a really messed up dude. If it's the latter, is he here on the organissimo forums?
  23. Tonight at the Regattabar in Cambridge, the SF Jazz Collective: Miguel Zenon, alto David Sanchez, tenor Avishai Cohen, trumpet Robin Eubanks, trombone Warren Wolf, vibes Edward Simon, piano Matt Penman, bass Obed Calvaire, drums
  24. Many years ago, I was at a restaurant with a good buddy and we were drinking a nice bottle of wine. I commented on how I always thought they did a good job with their logo by incorporating the ravens into it. He said that in all the years he'd been drinking their wine, he never saw the ravens until I just pointed it out to him.
