  1. I actually prefer the tunes on Vol. 3 but all of them are excellent.
  2. I saw that second comment and wondered what the heck he was talking about. I don't remember any conversations about Jazz artists taking to modeling to supplement their income. Does anyone remember this?
  3. Someone on the Steve Hoffman forums mentioned that he had been trying to register here with no luck. Do any current members know of others trying to register here? If so, PM me their username/e-mail and I'll see if I can get them activated.
  4. The best LP to check you turntable's isolation is Pink Floyd's "The Wall" on the track "Comfortably Numb".
  5. In the early days of CD, just like they did with some cassette tape releases, labels often had bonus tracks that were only available on CD to encourage people buy that instead of the vinyl. Steeplechase could list those tracks the same way. The craziest "bonus track" move was when some labels added bonus tracks to the CD version that was only released in Japan. Japan's CD prices were higher than the rest of the world so they added bonus tracks to some Japanese CDs to encourage Japanese buyers to buy their version instead of the cheaper import. The last CD I bought from Japan for the extra track was Gerald Clayton's "Happening: Live at the Village Vanguard".
  6. I was able to get a copy of Bob's Turandot CD from one of the players on the date. I think it's just totally bogus that Puccini's estate was able to retain the copyright for that opera through a fluke, with several people claiming that they finished the opera and therefore extended the copyright. Puccini died in 1924, ending "Turandot" then and there, with instructions that the opera should end where he finished. But family members wanted a piece of the action, so they had music added posthumously, which put Belden in a bind with the estate.
  7. I wonder why Steeplechase hasn't dipped their toes into the vinyl waters? Sure, it's likely a fad & CDs may make a comeback, but it's still a larger market when it comes to physical sales so it doesn't really make much business sense to not give it a try.
  8. I recognized Billy right away. Haden is the one I would not have guessed without the caption.
  9. When I get back from the holiday this weekend, I'll try to put it up on the web somewhere. I only have mp3 files, no FLAC or WAV, so that'll have to do. Bob wanted this heard so I'll do my part in his absence.
  10. Ordered a couple of Christmas CDs yesterday. and I've been spinning Volume 1 for several years so I thought I'd give the other volumes a try.
  11. I'm seeing Hill at The Regattabar in Cambridge on December 7th. I'm looking forward to it.
  12. I'm listening to this again and it seems strange to me that Deutsche Grammophon would squelch music one of their artists created. Snobbery or did they actually not like it? It's not great but I like hearing these jazzy interpretations of Vivaldi's violin quartet compositions.
  13. I wonder why the "star", which indicates that I have posted in this thread, has gone back to a "dot"? I wonder if this post will turn it back to a star? It's happened on several threads that I regularly post in. Yup - the star is back.
  14. Considering that HighNote's website doesn't even allow anyone to order anything at the moment, as the "Order" button goes to a broken link, I wonder how they're planning to sell these downloads?
  15. I wonder why Fresh Sound copied the Contemporary Records' label design? Did Pell ever record for Contemporary?
  16. I agree with you on this. For some reason, I've never been a fan of the sound on "Meet You..." either. The RVG CDs in particular sounded harsh to me.
  17. I always liked the live sound on those recordings, with a "you are there" feel. I don't think they sound like bootlegs at all.
  18. The thing that sticks in my mind the first few times I saw him live, was when he ended a drum solo with a hi-hat solo that went on and on. It was fun but a bit over the top. My ears were not happy by the end. In fact, the second time I saw him do it, I covered my ears for most of it. The weirdest thing about the last two times I saw him was him singing "The Gambler", and getting the crowd to join in.
  19. That is weird. No European LP releases back the in the 60s either.
  20. That is a very unusual recording. I would have never thought to re-imagine college fight songs in a Jazz setting. On top of that, after listening to a few of them on YouTube, I'm not sure I like them much.
  21. Sticking with the CD in this case makes you a completist, as it has unissued bonus tracks that the LP misses.
  22. Do you have an idea why the CD release didn't include all of this material?
  23. I just got back from a short trip to wine country in Northern Virginia. It was fun and there were some excellent wines. We ended up going to 5 wineries, with our favorite being Zephaniah Farm Vineyard in Leesburg. All of our favorite wines were whites as almost every red we tasted was far too wimpy for our palates. Our favorite overall wine was a white blend from Zephaniah called Steamship White. Unfortunately, these wineries are all too small to make an entry into the retail game, so if I want any more, it's mail order.
  24. I saw Roy quite a few times over the years. The earliest shows, in the mid-90s were pretty damn incredible. Thanks for the music Roy.
  25. According to the CD Japan listing, in this case, the Japanese edition is just the European CD edition with an obi: "The discs and materials are made in Europe. Comes with a Japanese obi."
