Toshiba Blue Notes for $10.00
Kevin Bresnahan replied to GA Russell's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I was also informed that their system does not keep current stock on line and that 2 of my titles were not going to ship. I e-mailed them a note expressing my concern that their system might lose them some business. I told them how I used to order 100's of dollars of Jazz from www.euclidrecords.com but that after getting a bunch of cancelled orders, I stopped shopping there. If people get a lot of cancelled orders, they'll stop shopping there, which would be too bad because they look like a good alternative source for Japanese CDs. Kevin -
Toshiba Blue Notes for $10.00
Kevin Bresnahan replied to GA Russell's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Hah! I thought I was the only one. I ordered Vol. 1 of Blakey's "Three Blind Mice" because I never got around to it when it was in print. -
Pm back at ya. The two Mosaics are sold. Herbie's still available. BTW, the only reason the Herbie is up here is because of its non-standard shape. I have it stored in another room because it won't fit in my Can Am unit. Even though I think it has some of the best-sounding versions of Herbie's BN material, I still grab the single CDs just out of convenience. Kevin

I still think that there were a couple of shill bidders driving that Quebec/Hardee 3 CD set to that price. The "winning bidder" has no history of that kind of spending, and a majoity of his previous purchases weren't even music. I'd be willing to bet that the second place bidder got an E-mail claiming that the winner stiffed him and "would he like to buy the set at your last bid"? I knew that eBay's new "Bidder 1", "Bidder 2" stuff was going to create this situation. We now have no way to know if the losing bidders were shills or not. It used to be a piece of cake to check the bidding history of the losers to see if they were legit. Now, let the shills rule! BTW, eBay probably loves shills. They get a cut of the final selling price. They could care less how that price got up there.

It ain't necessarily so! http://cgi.ebay.com/MOSAIC-CD-BOX-Ike-Queb...1QQcmdZViewItem I smell a shill! This is exactly why eBay's recent switch to "Bidder 1", "Bidder 2", etc. is very bad for the buyers. There is no way to know if the bidders are all legit. I'd bet that the winner is a shill. Look at his bid history. All books. Not someone who should be whipping down insanely stupid money for a Mosaic box.

I am very aware that my car's silence can be deadly in "stealth mode" so I am particulalrly careful in parking lots. My 2004 Prius is now up to 71,000 miles. Gas & oil changes. Best car I've ever owned (so far). I just picked up a 2002 Toyota Avalon for the wife. This is one smooooth ride.

Grant Green plays pretty good but Ike has played better. He sounds tired. When I heard these tunes in Cuscuna's office, he was looking for stuff for the "lost sessions" Connoisseur CD. He deemed these not worthy for release.

5 or 6 years ago, shortly after co-founder Charlie Lourie's death, Mosaic went through a tough patch. They let go one of the telephone operators and didn't fill another spot when someone else left. I was told that those moves would help keep a positive cash flow. I have no idea how they're doing now. I doubt they're doing excellent. No one in the physical music business is doing well that I'm aware of.

Earl Hines Trio GRAND REUNION (Verve 2-fer)
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Big Al's topic in Recommendations
I remember finding this in a used bin, seeing "Coleman Hawkins", and that was that. I agree that it's a great, swinging date and that Hawk is in top form. Not Smokin', but definitely swingin'. -
If they did, it wouldn't matter much. Clearly, they dislike this type of jazz as a rule, and give out ratings for it based on the wrong criteria. I'd agree with that John, except for the fact that they seem to like the sessions when they're listed as Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis & Johnny Griffin. The three titles listed under Eddie's name get 4, 3 1/2 and 3 1/2 stars. Flip to the two titles listed under Johnny's name, "Lookin' At Monk" and " Tough Tenor Favorites", and the ratings drop to 2 1/2 each. Do they jusy not like Griff? Later, Kevin

You want to know something? I almost didn't buy this because Morton & Cook bashed it in the Penguin guide. They gave it something like 2 1/2 stars and dinged for Griff & Lock going all out on every tune. Imagine my surprise when I played it and found two ballads and 3 other tunes taken at the same tempo Monk used! There is only one screamer, and that was the opening tune. Did the Penguin guys even listen to this CD?

I just picked up "Lookin' At Monk" from Hiroshi. It was just reissued in that very inexperience series last month. Even with shipping, it's around $10. The sound is very good too.

Oh I like this one: Mr. White Chocolate Kevin Flash -
I would have bought a lot more of these, but the prices were all over the map. When I first saw them (Tower Records maybe?), they were mid-line priced. Maybe $11.99? I bought a bunch. The next time I saw them, they were stickered "IMPORT" and had $15-20 price tags. I actually bought a whole bunch of the mini-LP versions from Berkshire Record Outlet for around $6 each. I think the mini-LP versions sound pretty nice too and even better, many included extra tracks not found on the jewel-cased versions.

I don't know specifically about "The Jody Grind", but the Japanese master tape of "Sweet Honey Bee" is identical to the US master, clicks and all. When BN decided to do "Sweet Honey Bee" in the US RVG series, I told Cuscuna he had to get the Japanese master because everyone said it had no clicks. Maybe it wasn't a needle drop? Well, according to Cuscuna, whoever did the mastering in Japan for their CD releases cleaned up the clicks. They were there. I assume this would be the same for "The Jody Grind". FWIW, the needle drops are in the BN vaults and apprently have been for decades. I believe the Japanese masters were created in the late 70s-early 80s. If the Japanese dupes have the clicks, the switch had already been made. Later, Kevin

I actually won't mind meeting Chris over on those SH forums. Some of his more obvious methods of dissing people, like intentionally mangling their name, wouldn't be allowed over there. It is good to hear Chris talk about his experiences as a Riverside employee and not about his animosity towards... well... many people. I hope he sticks around there even though politics is verbotim.

Philly joe solo lp w/ hank mobley
Kevin Bresnahan replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Discography
I once asked Michael Cuscuna about this. He said Blue Note was very good at documenting their recording sessions. I am pretty sure that it's been determined that "Thinking of Home" was the Blue Note Session Hank was talking about. He mentioned a guitar player and a suite. "Thinking of Home" has both. He said it wasn't released and that was true at the time. What's even weirder is that Hank isn't the only one feels there's a missing session. Guitarist Eddie Diehl remembers another session too. I was once contacted by someone who knew Eddie and he says that Eddie claims, like Hank, that there was another Blue Note session out there. Michael & I talked about this too and he figures both of them must be talking about "Thinking Of Home". I E-mailed the guy asking him to see if Diehl knew about the release of "Thinking of Home", but I never heard back from him. It may simply be that neither of them knew that Blue Note did actually release "Thinking of Home" in 1980, 10 years after they recorded it. If it isn't "Thinking of Home", Blue Note doesn't have it in their records. -

But what do you do when you have every session he ever played on? Oh wait, I still haven't picked up that Archie Shepp date. Ha, I'm still not there yet. -
Well now I'm really stumped! Peter, most volume controls are variable resistors. If these installers put pots (potentiometers) in series with every pair of speakers, they help increase the total impedance, but they also add noise. So, they did something right, but the resulting audio could be compromised. However, there is probably just as much noise added by a speaker selector box as most of them rely on resistive loading. As I said, it's been years since I've looked into a speaker selector box, but in researching the Outlaw Audio RR-2150, it has the ability to drive two pairs right out of the box and if you add another amp with a Y-adaptor on the pre-out jacks, you could add the others with no resistive loading. In your situation, that's what I'd do, but truth be told, I'm a bit anal about this stuff. I like the cleanest solution. FWIW, my current receiver is a Rotel 1055. If this were to croak tomorrow, I think I'd be buying an Outlaw Audio 1070 receiver. I like the company and their products seem to sound good and perform reliably. And this is even considering that I get Denon gear at a steep discount.

How do you "run 5 pairs"? Do you simply twist all 5 wires together and stick them into one terminal or do you run the + to speaker 1 and the - of speaker 1 to the + of speaker 2 etc? If you want to do a set-up like that right, you should look into a speaker switch box. It's been years since I looked into one, but Niles used to make a decent, inexpensive speaker box. If you're going to drive 5 parallel pairs of speakers out of an amp designed to drive 2, don't be surprised if it fries. If you've been doing that for 15 years with your NAD, it definitely makes sense to bring that amp into a service shop and get it fixed. It's a good one. The pairs of wires are twisted together. This was all professionally installed by Audio Emporium, THE high end audio store in the Milwaukee area. Peter, by capitalizing "THE", I assume you are implying that they are the best and wouldn't do something wrong. I would disagree. I bet if you read any amplifier owner's manual, it would not recommend this at all. Most amplfiers have been designed to drive a minimum of 4 Ohms. I would never do this. I should think that Audio Emporium should not have either. They should have recommended a speaker selector box. Maybe they didn't sell one so they ignored your problem?

Peter, I asked above but it's key to know if you plan to drive all of those speakers at the same time. The load all of those speakers would present is very low unless you have some of the wired in series and some in parallel. However, I have never been a fan of speakers connected in series. There is noise added by each speaker in the chain. Kevin

In the liner notes, I believe Shew talks about why he chose to do this record. I believe he says that he used to play in salsa bands in the New Mexico area and that he never lost his love of it. This is a really good CD. I believe it's been out of print for a long time so it may not be easy to find. FWIW, it's encoded with HDCD which may be part of the reason why it sounds so good. It's an audiophile recording. The brass is bright & edgy but not painfully harsh. If you play it back loud, it screams. I always crank this one up when I spin it, so obviously I don't spin it when the wife is home.

Two sides is correct. Belechick's side from a Boston Globe interview: http://www.boston.com/sports/football/patr..._on_2006_season Asked about the scene after the game, when it appeared he brushed off Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, Belichick said: "I talked to Tony [Dungy] after the game and congratulated him. Peyton, I didn't see, he kind of grabbed me, it all happened really fast. I saw Tony, I saw Adam [Vinatieri], wished him well. Saw [Dan] Klecko, wished him well. Ask any of them what happened after the game." As for the team's postgame celebration in San Diego that drew the wrath of Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson, Belichick said: "In San Diego, I honestly didn't see what happened. I had seen some clips after the game, but still don't know what happened. They show LaDainian coming in and Reche [Caldwell] is there, he pulls him in. I didn't see it. I still don't know what happened."
