  1. Not according to anyone I've asked, including Michael Cuscuna. I believe that he asked Dizzy himself. There is no evidence that John Burks is a "nom de session" for Dizzy.
  2. Dan, where are you reading that? When Rodney Harrison got busted, I read all I could find on HGH. I thought it was a steroid. But after reading about it, it looked to me that HGH shouldn't even be against the rules. It probably doesn't do anything. Many of it's reported benefits have never been clinically proven. It does not make everything grow bigger, it replaces an enzyme the everyone loses as they age and they no longer need to grow. I couldn't find one report of an adult who took HGH and grew. It looked to me like the only people who could benefit from taking it are short adolescents. Taking HGH continues their "growth spurt". But adults? I couldn't find anything that said it stopped the aging process. According to one article I read, it has become a rich man's "fountain of youth", with a lot of stars buying it in an effort to stay young.
  3. Fitzy's Wicked Pissah Superbowl XLII Preview
  4. While Specter was wondering this, the rest of world was wondering if Specter has been eating some lead paint. Um, Senator - the offense stopped using hand signals for the offense about 10 years ago. What's that? You haven't watched a game in 10 years? Oh well... GFY.
  5. Just finished: Jackie McLean - Hipnosis Record 1 (Blue Note) Now playing: Jim Snidero - Mixed Bag (Criss Cross)
  6. Just finished: Sal Salvadore - Starfingers (Bee Hive) Some nice Brignola solos. Too bad this pressing sucks the big one. Several skips on a minty-looking Side 1. No amount of cleaning has fixed it. Up now: Red Rodney & Ira Sullivan - Spirit Within (Elektra Musician) OK but it has some of that annoying whiny bass typical of 1980's recordings. The drummer, someone named Steve Bagby, is pretty good.
  7. I'm on my second one. FYI, even if your passport is valid, if it will expire in less than 6 months, they won't let you leave the country.
  8. Actually I think Blue Serge is still available because of it otherwise... Why pay that? www.vinyl.com has 3 different versions available new. Might not sound as great as an original, but should sound fine and you save hundreds (maybe thousands) of dollars.
  9. Spinning Ronnie Mathews' "Roots, Branches & Dances" on Bee Hive right now. Frank Foster is smokin' on this! I go back & forth between Ronnie's two Bee Hive LPs as to which I like more. Time to spin the other one ("Legacy").
  10. Booker Ervin's "Back From The Gig" disc 1, which is actually Horace Parlan's "Happy Frame Of Mind".
  11. www.euclidrecords.com - Best on-line LP seller I've found. Reasonable prices - like everyone, they ask too much for Blue Notes. Grading is OK - not perfect, just OK. Shipping is fast and I've never had any damaged records. I should also note that in the past, their on-line stock was not current. I used to have a lot of items wind up "Not Available" after I ordered it. They say they've fixed it, but I haven't ordered anything in a while. Scratch that - I just found a Dizzy Reece Bee Hive that I've been looking for. Ooooh, and they have Billy Mitchell and Al Cohn "Live in Dakar" on Xanadu! I've been looking for that for a while. Well, I'll see if they've fixed their on-line stock issue.
  12. I bought a Grado Blue P-mount cartridge for my old Technics SL-3 linear tracker TT and yesterday I finally got around to installing it. I spun a few records and it sounded great. Then, the belt seemed to come undone and the sound got pretty bad. I can get a new belt, but instead, I think I'm going to go for a new TT. So now I have a Grado Blue P-mount cartridge with about 2 hours on it for sale. I bought it from Music Direct for $80.00. I'll sell it for $60.00 plus $5 for shipping anywhere in the US. International shipping will be actual. Thanks, Kevin
  13. Wow! Oscar was a BABE! Who knew?
  14. I am so beat today. I went to both Patriots playoff games... first time I've ever done it. Seeing the post game Lamar Hunt AFC Champion trophy presentation live was pretty awesome. It wasn't as cold in the stadium as I thought it was going to be. But there was someone nearby who ate something that smelled pretty bad when converted to a gas. On to Arizona! Go Pats!
  15. I'd own the both of them if they were 33 1/3 rpm LPs. I am not getting into this 45 rpm fetish. And I still don't agree that cutting them at 45 rpm makes them sound any better. It just adds cost and makes them more expensive.
  16. With the announcement today that EMI (owner of Blue Note) is planning to slash their staff in half tomorrow, I have to wonder if these "small fry" releases that Blue Note has planned will even happen. I don't see these beancounters giving a guaranteed low-selling Jazz release the go. I wonder if there will be a Blue Note after tomorrow?
  17. Same dream - but substitute 'Mole Jazz' (RIP) for 'Stereojacks'. But if you do drop in at StereoJacks you can get that mole right next door! And that mole is excellent too! I usually order the Enchiladas Tres Marias. They also have excellent German beer on tap. Spaten Oktoberfest was there the last time I went. Yum.
  18. It's sounds like you have some Japanese RVG CDs. Do the obi strips say "RVG" in large letters? $15-18 is about right these days for these RVG discs. Some titles could bring more, particularly if it's a title that only came out in Japan. The US market seems to have soured on these discs, especially with many of them coming out domestically. It could also be that it's because they pressed so darn many of them. If you have a list, I'd like to see it as there are a few titles that I might go for. Feel free to PM me with it. Kevin
  19. Happy belated birthday. I hope your January first was better than mine. You wouldn't want this head cold for a present!
  20. We spinning Oscar's Christmas disc as I type. One of my favorite Jazzy Christmas CDs. RIP Oscar.
  21. If you truly enjoy Christmas music and have lot of it, Brubeck's disc would fit in wonderfully. But be aware - it is solo piano. If you like solo piano, it great. Do you have Oscar Peterson's Telarc CD? I find myself grabbing that disc more often than Brubeck's.
  22. I believe that is on CD as "Jazz á la Bohemia" on the OJC label. The cover now looks like this:
  23. I saw one in a window in Haverhill, MA last week and nearly drove off the road because I was laughing so hard. When I was a kid, my aunt had one with one of those motorized color wheels. My whole family used to laugh about it every year, especially when we watched "A Charlie Brown Christmas" and Charlie sees a metal tree in the tree stand.
  24. Wah? The CD backer uses the same font as the original LP. The cover is reproduced. The liner notes are reproduced (in the same font). What makes this Connoisseur CD release look like a "bootleg label"? Everything is tiny, but that's what happens when you cram 12" square LP artwork into a 4.5" square.
  25. I'm using Firefox but I tried switching to IE and it still happened once yesterday. I'll try messing with my cookies today but I have little hope that will work - it's happening on 2 different PCs.
