  1. As I said on another board to someone asking this same question, if I had one box set to buy from Mosaic out of all that they currently have in print, it would definitely be the Johnny Hodges. This is a phenomenal box and it's one that I play quite a bit. Of course, I'm also a huge Ben Webster fan so the combo of great Hodges with beaucoup Webster puts me in a fine mood. Later, Kevin
  2. 2 CDs shipped on 9/8 from Canada? The last 2 transactions I was involved with from Canada took 5-6 weeks each. I wouldn't be surprised if Leeway reports their arrival in the next 2 weeks.
  3. When the word got back to Michael Cuscuna at Mosaic that they grabbed the mono tapes for "Off to the Races", he told me it was mistake on his part. However, he did say that it wasn't a terrible mistake because the stereo mix of this date was typical early stereo by Rudy... rhythm in one track and horns on the other. He gave me the impression that the mono was better. Of course, having the earlier stereo TOCJ CD, I told him that the stereo mix on this date was fine to my ears. Later, Kevin
  4. My main reason for figuring that the master tapes were mono was the fact that there are these 2 extra (previously unissued) tracks. Obviously, they pulled the master tapes to make this CD. If there were both stereo & mono tapes, I would have thought they'd pull the stereo tapes if they had them. BTW, the CD says "previously released as CL 1059". No mention of a stereo release. Maybe it never made it out? Does anyone have the stereo LP version of this? One listen and this mystery would be solved. Later, Kevin
  5. I have the CD version of this album... not that old, really... copyright 1994. It is mono. I imagine that the stereo version of this LP was electronically reprocessed from the mono mix. BTW, this CD has decent audio. It also has 2 unreleased tracks, "Very Good Advice" (5:31) and "So This Is Love" (5:56), making it doubly worth picking up if you dig the LP. Later, Kevin
  6. Some of these trojans simply cannot be removed using conventional means. Nothing will remove them completely. Your only hope, obiwan, is the Force.... um... I mean System Restore. Run System Restore and pick the date closest to right before it got infected. Your next step may be to download Mozilla's Firefox web browser. I've just started playing with this but it shows promise. It appears to be able to stop these infestations a lot easier than IE. Later, Kevin
  7. FYI, the link referred to here is Renee's own homepage and if you look at most of the titles, you'll see an "Order now for Jazz Cares" button. Click this and buy the CDs directly from Renee. You'll not only get an autographed copy of the CD, you'll be making a donation to a great charity, The Jazz Musicians Emergency Fund. Myself, I buy them direct because I dig getting them signed. FYI, "As We Are Now" is very nice but don't overlook some awesome Joe Henderson on "For the Moment". Chris Potter or Joe Henderson... you make the call. Later, Kevin
  8. Wow... we must have very different systems. I think this disc is an example of how good SACD can be. It sounds phenomenal to me. Of course, I also compared it to the old Bainbridge/Time CD, which sounded pretty lousy. It could only go up from there. Later, Kevin
  9. In this political environment we live here in the US, merely requesting to go to Cuba would immediately put you on some "watch list". It would not be worth the trouble just to go see a Jazz festival. The next thing you know, you're getting audited by the IRS. It may sound funny but I would bet big bucks that this would happen. Nah... I'll stay home and catch a few shows at the Regattabar. Later, Kevin
  10. I'll be at the R'bar tomorrow night. Mark Shim comes into town with drummer Mike Clark. As an added bonus, he has Onaje Allan Gumbs on piano. I don't remember the last time I saw him play. I hope he's in his straight-ahead mode and avoids playing the smooth stuff he's been known for lately. This Saturday at Ryle's, vibe player Matthias Lupri is bringing in a band with Chris Potter on sax. I'm thinking about this... although the unknown guitarist scares me. Later, Kevin
  11. In my searches, both "Breakthrough" and "Song Everlasting" have been 2 of the rarest oop Blue Notes. Other rarities are the 2 Leo Parkers as well as James Newton's "Romance and Revolution". With the upcoming Mosaic Select release, I expect that these will start showing up in the used bins soon. They only have trade-in value until that Select comes out. Later, Kevin
  12. I used to recommend Django's but with this last sale, I ordered several used DVDs. Order went through, confirmation E-mail received... then I got an E-mail saying the items I ordered are no longer available. Basically, their web site no longer reflects actual stock, just stock as entered into their system. I doubt I'll be using this web site much more after this. Later, Kevin
  13. We talked a bit about these in the reissues forum in this thread. I still love those covers couw came up with in that thread. Cuscuna did forward them to Patrick Roques. I wonder what Patrick thought of them? Later, Kevin
  14. I just re-listened to "Complete Communion" on my way into work this morning. I still like this one out of the 3 Cherry did for BN. I still have a burn of "Where Is Brooklyn" from the Mosaic box and I play it every now & then. It is definitely my least favorite date. I keep trying to get into it. Maybe some day. Back to topic... has anyone else gotten asked if you worked for Blue Note when you wear their gear to a show? I stopped wearing my Blue Note golf shirt to the Regattabar because of this. Later, Kevin
  15. Someone (on rmb maybe?) quoted Mobley from a very old interview where he said that several of the titles from the sessions that made up "No Room For Squares" (and later "Straight No Filter") were filed incorrectly by Blue Note. The one I remember being singled out was "Up A Step". It is clearly not "Up A Step". The tune "No Room For Squares" is the real "Up A Step". Later, Kevin
  16. Yup, heard both of them... even owned "Symphony For Improvisors" for a few years after I found it cheap in a used bin. I just don't like them. I am not a fan of frenetic music of any style and these 2 Blue Note dates get pretty busy in a couple of places. When a tune starts going out, particularly screeching trumpets and saxes, I just fail to get into it. It's my problem, obviously not yours. As for "The Empty Foxhole", Ornette's violin just sounded too weird. Actually, the whole date, with 10 year old Denardo banging away and Ornette playing violin & trumpet like a 10 year old just sounded wrong for some reason. If I heard it today, I might like it just fine. 10 years ago when the CD came out, I didn't. Hey, it's not like my collection is somehow deficient because I don't have these 2 discs. I have more than a few others to listen to. Excuse me... there's something rustling around in the bushes outside my window. It's... it looks like a chipmunk. No wait... it's brass... is that a trumpet? Hey, get out of my bushes! Ahhh! It's chasing me... I can't escape...
  17. I've been trying to get Mosaic to do this for about 2 years. As mentioned in this thread, it is very expensive to remaster and manufacture hybrid SACDs. However, Sony was offering some financial support which is how we got the Blue Note discs. Supposedly, Sony was still talking with Blue Note/Mosaic and something may happen. I do believe there has been a bit of a "wait & see" attitude at Mosaic with regards to SACD and DVD-Audio. However, in recent conversations with them, I got the feeling that they are leaning toward SACD. Of course, it might be because Sony may give them the chance to do so at minimal financial risk. Later, Kevin
  18. I don't have the plastic "Connoisseur" watch, but I do have the more expensive (yes, $60 was the price) metal/blue leather watch. I had to replace the band... hard to do when it's blue leather... and it still runs great. I wear it on occassion but it doesn't have a date window which annoys the heck out of me. I didn't get the Connoisseur watch because there were 2 or 3 titles in the first batch of 12 CDs that I never wanted to buy, even for a watch. I still dont have "Symphony For Improvisers" or "The Empty Foxhole"... don't miss 'em either. Later, Kevin
  19. I see that someone bought the copy at Red Trumpet... I hope you got in on it, bluesForBartok. Later, Kevin
  20. I believe is a signal that I was joking. I do not hate the French... in fact, my ancestry is mostly French. Believe me, jokes involving Irish and drinking are just as prevalent as jokes about being French and surrendering so I get my heritage (jokingly) insulted both ways. Apres, Kevin
  21. Not all LP sets are worth more than their CD counterpart. For example, I've seen LP versions of both the Shorty Rogers and the Ike Quebec/John Hardee sets go for far less than the CD version. I almost bought an LP version of the Quebec/Hardee set for $40 once just for the booklet. I've never seen the CD version for less than $300. Later, Kevin
  22. Yeah, but when EMI countersues, the French lawyers will all hide and fail to show up in court.
  23. Nah, even better: http://www.redtrumpet.com/software/item.ph...&sid=1016658406. If I had to re-buy this, the 24 bit remaster from Japan would be the way I would go. And at Red Trumpet for only $13.99, it's quite the steal, I would say. In fact, I've almost bought a spare copy myself. This is too cheap. Later, Kevin
  24. I had this problem while using EZ CD Creator on a CD a while back. To this day, I don't understand how it happened. I was led to believe that EZ CD Creator just copied 1's & 0's. Obviously, it is doing more than that. I have a theory as to why this happened to me that one time: it was the first and only time I duped a CD encoded with HDCD. If this is the case with the CDs you had duped, that may be it. In fact, I am hoping that you say they were HDCD encoded CDs. That would be proof of my theory. BTW, the only way I was able to copy that CD was by using Exact Audio Copy to extract the audio as well as to burn it. I tried using EAC to just extract the files and EZ CD Creator to burn thme but I still got distortion. I guess that means the distortion is during the write. Later, Kevin
  25. Mark Elf is a great player but I would hesitate before going to see him live again. His vocalizations during solos is way too loud for my taste. It's to the point of distraction a la Jarrett. Later, Kevin
