  1. This is very sad news. Fortunately, she leaves a body of important and provocative work behind.
  2. Though not an immediate heir to Bird, Trevor Watts certainly merits consideration.
  3. 2 CDs from the "Jazz in Paris" series arrived in the mail today from Dusty Groove: Don Byas - "Laura"; mostly gorgeous ballads (My wife says Don Byas sounds like rich chocolate on these recordings.) Stan Getz - recorded live in Paris in 1966; backed by Gary Burton, Steve Swallow, and drummer extraordinaire Roy Haynes.
  4. "It Came Upon A Midnight Clear" on Billy Harper's "Soul Of An Angel".
  5. Yeah you are right. It is my understanding they did not want to pay Corliss Williamson and Mehmet Okur the money. I think they through in James to make a deal. The worse thing about Detroit, even worse than Darko was trading for Derrick Coleman, a beat up, worn out, overweight, out of shape, attitude carrying veteran who can no longer cut the mustard. B-) My wife and I miss the old bench during every game, especially "Big Nasty" and "Memo". FWIW, I've been calling Darko "Dorko" since his anticlimactic arrival in Detroit.
  6. Top '60s Blue Note leaders for quality and consistency? For me, they're Wayne Shorter, McCoy Tyner, Sam Rivers, and Bobby Hutcherson.
  7. I try to avoid Christmas music per se, but I do like "It Came upon a Midnight Clear" on Billy Harper's "Soul of An Angel". I also like Rahsaan Roland Kirk's "We Free Kings".
  8. I've been hooked on "The Wire" since I finally found it last season. The acting, the writing, the characters, the stories - all great. I never miss it. Stringer Bell is a great character, but it was very cool to see two of my other faves team up to take him out. I'm not worried about the future of this superb show.
  9. Sorry I can't give you a direct answer. The folks at Dusty Groove said that the guy who's owned the label for a few years has reportedly been unreliable and even hostile. This was before he switched to Paypal. I hope that you get a favorable reply, because I'd sure like to get Carn's "Spirit Of the New Land" and "Revelation" , which I enjoyed very much on LP back in the day. Now I just have "Infant Eyes" (which I bought from Dusty Groove). I also dug The Awakening's "Hear, Sense, and Feel".
  10. I enjoyed that Mingus recently. Now I'm listening to the Sam Rivers, Disk 3.

I agree with ztrauq22 for Herbie Hancock's contributions to the larger culture, but I also recognize Sun Ra for his pioneering work.
  12. Aside from the Windows and Office Update functions, I avoid IE and its shells. I do everything else with Opera or the latest Mozilla Firefox.
