  1. Norman Granz Jam Session # 1
  2. I don't know about "influential", but he's not among my five favorite jazz guitarists.
  3. The Bobby Timmons Trio in Person
  4. I was driving this morning and heard Mozart's piano concerto no. 23 - John O'Conor/Mackerras/Scottish C.O. It caught my ear, but I was driving so that doesn't necessarily mean much. Anyone have any thoughts or opinions?
  5. Benny Carter: Jazz All Star Orchestra Live in Japan '79 (Paddlewheel) An all-star band recorded live at a concert in Japan isn't usually my thing, but this one has a number of beautiful short solos that make it well worth listening to.
  6. Duke Pearson: Profile
  7. Arne Dahl: Misterioso There's a connection in the book with Monk's 1958 Five Spot recording (and an unreleased track). OK, but I found that the plot was too convoluted and there were too many characters for me to keep track of without looking back on what I'd already read. There are better Swedish mysteries out there.
  8. Blue Mitchell Quintet: Down With It!
  9. Sixty Minute Man Billy Ward Nurse Rached An aside: after posting this, I googled Louis Fletcher - Nurse Rached in the film version of "Cuckoo's Nest" - and found that she's appeared in 63 films since she played that role and in 36 TV episodes since 1991. Who knew? Not me, for sure.
  10. Anyone up for this week or next? Maybe we need a sign up sheet or something similar.
  11. Joey Bishop Bobby Knight Pawn Stars
  12. Dirty Harry Doctor Filth Henry Grimes
  13. Adam Ant Beetle Bailey Bugs Bunny
  14. "10 Koko Taylor – Blue Prelude – Checker unreleased. First issued on ‘What it takes’ 2 LP set 1991.Prob Chicago, 1967. I don’t have a discography of Koko’s work, so I don’t know when it was recorded, but it sounds just like the session at which she recorded ‘Insane asylum’ which appeared in 1967." I didn't participate - not my thing - but here's some info: Recorded 1972 with Gene Barge: ts; Lafayette Leake: p; Mighty Joe Young, Reggie Boyd: g; Louis Satterfield: b; Clifton James: d.
  15. Just want to mention that I appreciate Clunky and Jeff posting their 78 listening. I find it fascinating, even though I don't have anything to play 78s on. Thanks, guys!
  16. No one is saying he's a future McCovey, but the Rookie of the Year Award is for that year, not a prediction of a full career. No one knew that Willie McCovey would end up in the Hall of Fame when he finished his rookie season. And regardless of whether anyone likes it or doesn't like it, and regardless of what the future holds, Gary Sanchez will receive votes for Rookie of the Year.
  17. I have the first novel in that series on my "mysteries to read" list.
  18. Jimmy Walker Wes Montgomery Leroy Vinnegar
  19. Newk Nuke LaLoosh H-Bomb Ferguson
  20. Declan Burke: Slaughter's Hound
  21. I just thought that people got dumber and started to live their lives more and more on the surface. And perhaps that's a dumb thing to think, but it was true for me.
