  1. Not sure if that's supposed to be Jaki, but a pretty wild cover whoever it may be.
  2. The Doublemint Twins Gumby Eddie Murphy
  3. Tom, As you know, I'm retired from the USPS, so I know well what you have to deal with every winter. Glad you're on vacation. Your old stomping grounds (Hudson Valley is supposed to get hit, but not as hard as the coast.
  4. Furry Lewis Archibald Lloyd Price
  5. Saint Nick Nick Van Exel X-Ray Spex
  6. Roy Haynes Abner Haynes Robert Parrish
  7. Another white boy with soul: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCzi8-H08Jw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNyl3Tq7NKc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibZ8U-b24Ko https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibZ8U-b24Ko With Sauce Gonzales playing some fine organ.
  8. Simple but true: Ives: "Why can't you stand up before fine strong music like this and use your ears like a man?"
  9. The front cover is somewhat ordinary. The back cover is pretty cool, but I couldn't find an image. Here it is in another form:
  10. "Four" was in my head all afternoon. Now Scott Joplin is in my head after reading & listening to Moms' post on William Albright: Funny how that stuff happens.
  11. After the fact, the Patriots didn't need to do what they did. But the fact remains that Belichick will do anything - legal or not - to try to gain an advantage. I'm saying Belichick and not the Patriots because, as I said before, I don't believe that there's anything that goes on with the Patriots that Mr. Control Freak doesn't know about or have a hand in.
  12. Iirc, Marshall Effron's parody lasted until Joe Franklin threatened to sue and WBAI couldn't afford to fight it in court. It was hilarious. Here's a pass along e-mail I received from a friend: Back in the 70s when Mingus’ Beneath The Underdog was published he was a guest on The Joe Franklin Show. Virginia Graham, the daytime TV show host, was also a guest and preceded Mingus. After the Graham segment Joe goes into his Hoffman soda spiel then says “When we return jazz great Charlie Yardbird Mingus”.
  13. Gram Parsons was lucky enough to be around at a time when image topped voice - of course that's now lasted lasted til today. In the 50's, with his voice, he would have been blown off stage by many, many country singers and laughed off stage by the audience. Ditto Emmy Lou - a mediocre backup singer at best.
  14. I heard this group play live and Hersch was definitely the weak point.
  15. A long time favorite. same with me, also (re)listened today to : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqmVvQuzGO4 it seems like ages ago when encountering this for the first time in the early 80`s.... Looking at his website and at Wikipedia, it doesn't appear that he's recording much anymore - pretty much dub compilations and live recordings. Too bad - he made some great records. His record company does appear to have recorded some musicians associated with him and also other artists.
  16. Given Tristano's choices of drummers and previous things that I've read, that seems like an extraordinary statement. But who knows - perhaps people change.
  17. Not sure why they used the photo AND drawing here, they don't really make sense as the beginning and end, but the end part (even if it wasn't really, perhaps more because it wasn't) is some of my favorite trumpet playing, unauthorized recording and just plain music of all time! It's been brought up here before but, as you imply and according to a Cadence interview with Billy Root, who played on the session, the " "last session" actually took place over a year before the date listed on the record. Also, see http://www.jazz.com/dozens/hood-selects-clifford-brown for more information.
  18. Nothing in the media (at least that I've seen or read) brings up the notion that Belichick is such a control freak that there's nothing that goes on with that team that he doesn't know about. No one can make me believe that he had no knowledge of what went on. The man is a reptile and a reptile watches everything.
