I think I'm pretty lucky. During the year, my wife sees things that she likes & has me buy them then and put them away for Christmas. By the time Christmas comes round, both she & I have forgotten what I've bought, so everything's a surprise and the great thing is that I don't have to go Christmas shopping for her - hate the crowds this time of year.

Not me. My wife thinks I already have too many records. And she's probably right.

I live about 30 miles south of Tom, & the forcast was for 5-8 inches. Only got hit with an inch at most. I'm not complaining.

Just looked at the members list. What is reputation? And how do I acquire one?

Just heard from my friend. He says that Little Melvin (Underwood) played with Mighty Sam McLain and Ivory Joe Hunter, and was based in the south. My friend has no knowledge that this Little Melvin ever played with a jazz group. Evidently there's another Melvin Smith or Little Melvin out there.

Melvin Smith was strictly a vocalist who recorded for RCA and Groove in the 1950's, and then was part of The Nite Riders, a successful show band led by Doc Starks and featuring legendary pianist Van Walls, into the 1960's. I'm pretty sure that he's not the guy you're talking about. Little Melvin (Underwood) was (is?) a blues/r&b vocalist/guitarist who recorded for small labels in Louisiana in the late 50's/early 60's. Around 2000 or so, he was based in Upstate N.Y., and played at the bar mitzvah of the son of a very good friend. I met him and he signed a copy of an Ace CD on which two previously unreleased tracks of his appear. I'll get in touch with my friend and see what he knows.

I'll miss seeing Matsui in pinstripes, but I wish him well. He can still swing the bat.

Good news. I can wait.

Sure seems fast. I'll get used to the change in a day or two - good for me to leave comfort zones now and again.

I knew his name but was unfamiliar with his playing. I also had no idea that he lived in an area near where I live. All of which is my loss. So much goes on around us without our knowledge.

I'll put in my yearly plug for Robert Earl Keen's "Merry Christmas from the Family" - sad, funny, & a good amount of truth.

Don't know what versions you have Jeff, but the sound alone on the Mosaic makes it worth getting. I played one CD for a friend who had OJC versions of some of the material, and after a few tracks he was won over and said he was going to order the Mosaic.
