  3. I wouldn't spend that kind of $ for it, but interesting to see. Thanks for posting, brownie.

  5. How about a MacArthur award for Mr. Freeman? He deserves it.

  8. Some VERY interesting stuff there!
  9. Haven't listened to that one in years, Jeff. Time to take it off the shelf.
  10. Always liked David Izenzon's arco playing. Mingus' arco playing on the Monterey album got to me back when - perhaps not perfect, but emotionally there & that was important to me. I was always impressed with Mingus' arco playing, given that he had so much else going on - composing, leading bands, making his bands swing. To me, it was amazing that he had the time and energy to put into it.

  14. Don't have the book, but did Giddins or DeVeaux (or both) write what Larry quoted? Not clear from the initial post.
  15. Guess Dickie forgot about the intro solo Freddie played on Well's "I'm Fer It, Too" - very, very short, but single string playing, not chords.
  16. Honeysuckle Rose Daisy Mae Buttercup Powell
  17. 6 of 12. Not bad for someone who's not much into soul jazz.
  18. Andy Bathgate Edmond Hall Joe Chambers
  19. Dick Barnett Walt Frazier Earl Monroe
  20. Bongo Joe Mongo Santamaria Chuck Barris
  21. Guess I'll end up playing the role of the spoiler here. 2-3-4 comes across to me as a bunch of recordings that the producer cobbled together to make up an album. And much of Shelly Manne's playing comes across to me as contrived. I've kept it for some snippets of Hawk on tenor, Duvivier, and the novelty of Hawk playing piano.
  22. Jutta Hipp w. Zoot Sims (BN/Toshiba EMI Japan)
  23. Sonny Rollins (BN/Toshiba EMI Japan)
  24. Hope you have a very happy birthday, Bill!
  25. Combination tribute albums & a way for the record company to introduce musicians to an audience that might not have been familiar with them.
