Dexter Gordon Quartet: I Want More (Steeplechase)

Larry Young: Into Somethin' (BN/King - Japan)

No one should take the Hornets lightly. They beat San Antone (albeit at home) big time last night. I'm happy to see Byron Scott doing well, after the screwing he took in New Jersey.

I have King issues of Gooden's Corner and Oleo, and also have the Mosaic box. I'd never compared them before - just listened to whichever I felt like listening to. Today I listened to a couple of cuts of each King LP, and listened to the corresponding cuts on the Mosaic box. Didn't want to do more than that, since too much comparison listening can make me crazy. I feel as if I'm listening for sounds rather than listening to music. The Japanese LPs sounded more open, airy, and the music sounded somewhat clearer to me than the Mosaic did. However, the Japanese Gooden's Corners sounded a bit bright - an issue for me, since my ears tend to be sensitive to that kind of thing. The Oleo King LP sounded better all around to me than the Mosaic. In the end, the Mosaic is a very good sounding set, and includes tracks that weren't available on LP- some that were previously unissued on any format - before the Mosaic was issued. I could live with it and listen to it (and have) with no regrets. Incidentally, Matador isn't included on the Green/Clark Mosaic box. McCoy Tyner was the pianist on that one. adhoc - hope you'll stick around and join in on the discussions here.

I'm with you on this one Paul, 20 wins is 20 wins. Some will try to discredit Houston by saying look who they played. Well they played the same teams everyone plays and they are doing what winning teams do, beat the teams you are supposed to beat. :bwallace2: However, right now I don't see anyone beating the Pistons in a seven game series. Think you may be right. I'm hoping the Lakers will improve a notch or two when and if Bynum returns, but ...

Good to see you back. You were missed. -
13 years ago, I was in the same situation.

How 'bout some respect for the Rockets? I know that everyone says they won't go far in the playoffs without Yao, but 20 straight wins is 20 straight wins.

Hope that there'll be a few comments on Lorraine Geller's music here.

Paul, have you considered springing for this instead? All of Schnabel's Schubert recordings in a 5-disc set by Music & Arts, with new transfers by the highly regarded Mark Obert-Thorn (more about it here). This has been on my wish list for a while. Didn't know about the Music & Arts issue. I'll have to consider that one. Thanks for the heads up.

I'm not much interested in the topic of this thread, but I think that Larry has supported his opinions and has acted responsibly throughout it.

Thanks for letting all of us be a part of your lives. I'm sure that there are times when we're not a wanted part of your lives . Thanks for putting up with us at those times.

Most or all of us have wish lists of recordings that we plan to get sooner or later - whether we need them or not. I'm listing a half dozen or so that I plan to pick up - probably in the near future. Of course this list could change by tomorrow, depending, among other things, on how I'm feeling and what I've listened to between now and then. Steve Lacy (w. Roswell Rudd): Early and Late (Cuneiform) Clarence Williams: Whoop It Up (Frog) Roscoe Mitchell & the Transatlantic Art Ensemble: Compositions/Improvisations 1,2 & 3 (ECM) Various Jazz Violinists: I Like Be I Like Bop (AB Fable) The Everly Brothers: Outtakes (Bear Family) Schnabel Plays Schubert Volume 1 (Pearl) Thought that it might be interesting if others shared listings of recordings they're thinking about adding to their collections.

I like Gayle's Homeless (Silkheart) and Touchin' on Trane (FMP) - listened to that one again today. His playing on Cecil's Always a Pleasure didn't make an impression on me - perhaps it's time for another listen. I haven't felt a need for other recordings. I may have heard Gayle in Buffalo in early 1968. I went to a concert where a saxophonist with a wild uncontrolled sound and style played. Didn't catch a name, but it may well have been Charles Gayle.

One copy on Amazon for 40 bucks. I'd spend that for a legitimate issue if I wanted it badly enough, but I steer clear of Fresh Sound reissues (their newly recorded issues are a different story). So I hope that I can get some info/opinions/appreciations here.

I've been listening to some of Lorraine Geller's music over the past few days - at least to the little I have: her trio recording on Dot, a couple of LPs with her husband, Herb Geller, and Red Mitchell's recording on Contemporary. I read her name in the liner notes for Ornette's Tomorrow Is the Question LP long before I ever heard her play. That led me to want to hear her music. Ornette dedicated his tune "Lorraine" to her and called her "a wonderful piano player." I would agree with that. She had a great feel to her playing. Her solos had other things going on in her playing other than straight bop. She also wrote some good tunes -"Mystery Theatre", "Madame X", "Clash By Night". I'm starting this thread to find out more about her music, about her life (she died very young), and just to hear from others who enjoy her work.

I believe that Adler has reissued the recording as Danny Adler - The Otis "Elevator" Gilmore Album.
-
I've posted this before, but it fits this thread - more as put on than parody. A guitarist/singer named Danny Adler recorded some tunes and shopped them to various record companies as recordings by a deceased bluesman who had worked as an elevator operator. Flyright, in the UK, issued the recordings, complete with liner notes giving the history of Otis "Elevator" Gilmore, along with a cover photo. From what I understand, Flyright discovered the hoax, but only after copies of the LP were pressed, sued Adler, and received damages to cover their expenses (though probably not to cover their embarassment).

And again... Good for you! Seems like most of us here get up too damn early. -
Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?

Art Pepper Select - the Modern Art session Just my first listen to this date, but it sounds like Pepper was truly on a roll when he recorded it. -
Windy yesterday and today - tho not as bad today. Probably normal wind conditions for Chicago or Buffalo

Ed Sherman. Haven't listened to Sherman/Crater's Riverside LP in a while, but I remember him sounding like a Lenny Bruce wannabe.
