Dan - Some of these look like pretty good bets. Haven't heard the Rev-Ola releases, but have much of this material in earlier forms. Have to say that I haven't heard real good reports on Sugar Chile Robinson. He WAS just a kid. Don't know anything about Anna King except as a name. & don't know what material is on the Joe Hinton. These four look good: Doc Pomus was a good jump blues singer, in addition to being a fine songwriter, so I'll recommend that one. Ike Turner - This is probably a boot of the legal Ace stuff. Great stuff. Big John Greer - Probably mostly a boot of the (o/p?) Bear Family set. Good (not the best, but good) jump/r&b. Buddy and Ella Johnson - Good jump blues r&b - believe that this is their Mercury stuff I'd look elsewhere for these: Percy Mayfield - go for Poet of the Blues & Memory Pain (Specialty) & you'll have it all. Little Walter - Just a rehash of his Chess sides Johnny Adams - Go for I Won't Cry: From the Vaults of Ric & Ron Records (Rounder) or even better, Reconsider Me (Collectables) from SSS - the version of I Won't Cry on this one is worth the price of the CD. edit: Steve beat me to some of this. I have the Greer Bear Family. Perhaps the Rev-Ola is somewhat different material.

I don't think that jazz was ever a young people's music. When I was coming up, I made a conscious effort to seek out music that had more depth than the rock n roll I heard on the radio. I basically did that on my own. I bought some copies of down beat, used those to learn a few names and pick up some records, and was on my way. A couple of years later, I came to blues in pretty much the same way. Back then, I was the only person in my high school who listened to jazz - at least I didn't know of anyone else. Even in college, real jazz fans were scarce. Imo, jazz or any other music that requires true listening - as opposed to surface listening - will probably always have a minority audience, and probably a more adult audience. I don't know that that's a good thing or a bad thing. It's just fact.

MG - I find that some of my old LP compilations on Blues Classics, Yazoo, etc. are more enjoyable to listen to than the single artist CDs that are the norm today. Those recordings were originally issued on 78s, and weren't meant to be listened to 20 to 25 tracks at a time. Compilation LPs broke things up and helped to recreate some of that earlier time listening experience.

Don't know what albums were recorded on Leap Day, but I saw a listing of people who were born on February 29th - among them: Serial killers Richard Ramirez and Aileen Wuornos Motivational speaker Tony Robbins "Actor" Dennis Farina I'd change my birthday if I had to share it with that crew.

Just ordered the Hodges. Was on the fence because I already have at least 40% of the material. Then I used "logic" and decided that that meant I didn't have 60% of that music, and, hey, it's Johnny Hodges. I ordered by phone, and the person taking the order reiterated what Tom was told - they expect the Hodges to be gone by the end of this weekend. Sounds like now or never time.
