  1. I wanted to laugh, but it was just too friggin' sad.
  2. http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00...2450&sr=1-3 King sides - by both Clifford Scott and Lynn Hope. Fine music, but very expensive.
  3. I've heard that this happens quite a lot, actually. I used to work for the postal service, so I know it's a real possiblity.
  4. This afternoon: Frank Edwards: Done Some Travelin' (Trix)
  5. A possiblity: your regular mail carrier might be on vacation and the substitute carrier doesn't know whose mail goes where.
  6. All of the OJC LPs I've heard sound fine, including US pressings, French (Carrere) and UK (ACE), some state remastering from digital sources but even these sound excellent The U.S. OJC LPs that came from analog masters - 001 to about 270 or so - sound better than the corresponding CDs. The later LPs that were done from digital remasters (the ones I've heard) sound about the same as the CDs - at least to my ears.
  7. Thanks, David! Looking forward to reading part 2.
  8. Lots of truly fine recordings in this series. Some personal favorites: 2004 - Tiny Grimes 2007 - Al Casey (An aside - a friend who ran a small blues record company told me that one session he would have liked to recorded was a Tiny Grimes/Al Casey date. He didn't have the money to do it at the time, and later on it was too late.) 2008 - Pee Wee Russell 2012 - Bud Freeman 2016 - Hawk & Lockjaw 2017 - Buck Claton/Buddy Tate 2019 - Joe Newman
  9. Happy Birthday! Hope it's a great day for you!
  10. Been there, done that, try not to these days.
  11. cliff - did you mean Art Farmer or Thad Jones? I have a copy of the Jazztone and Thad is the trumpeter.
  12. Penelope Lively's Consequences Not my favorite among her works, but she's one of my favorite writers and there were many good moments during my reading.
  13. I've written about this recording before, but it fits in this thread: Dom Minasi: Quick Response - Minasi on guitar, with Kyle Koehler on organ, Mark Whitecage on alto, and John Bollinger on drums - not greazzzzyyyy but real good music.
  14. Supposed to be very hot & humid today. Not complaining tho, after seeing what's happened in the midwest.
  15. I don't know, but did you notice that it was obviously a studio recording? Remember how unique the Five Spot piano sounded on other live records? It is obviously a studio recording - the liner notes mention that also - but it would have been great if Decca had recorded that band live, even with the "unique" (you're being too kind) Five Spot piano.
  16. Frosty played with Doug Sahm for a time - mid 80s? - and recorded with him on The Texas Mavericks: Who Are These Maked Men? (New Rose).
  17. No significant differences except on 121 Bank Street, which is listed as 5:55 - checked on my player to be sure - 5:54 there.
  18. I have Pre-Bird and read the mention of index figures/edits in the notes. Didn't see any mention of that in the Russell notes - unless I missed it.
  19. Herschel Brown, Buster & Jack, Roy Harvey & Leonard Copeland, South Georgia Highballers, et. al.: Mister Charlie's Blues
  20. I was listening to the Verve CD issue of George Russell Sextet at the Five Spot and noticed that the track indicator on my CD player listed a series of second numbers after the track number (1-1, 1-2, 1-3; 2-1, 2-2, 2-3, ...). I believe that only one track didn't have a second number after the track number. Do the second numbers indicate edits? At times I thought I could hear where an edit might have occured, and other times I couldn't. Or maybe I was just hearing things that weren't there. edit - Figures that I had to edit this post.
  21. Terrible news! Too many coincidences - I was just listening to Bura-Bura this afternoon - w. Lacy, Cherry, and Holland. Masahiko Togashi was a wonderful musician, and, like many others, overlooked by most of the jazz audience. Thanks, Mr. Togashi, for all of the great music. You'll be missed and remembered.
  22. Interesting thought, but perhaps it was intended as an album from which a number of 45s could be issued. I was curious and checked. Surprisingly, only one 45 - "Motorin' Along"/"Since I Fell for You" - was issued from this date, and "Since I Fell for You" wasn't included on the original LP.
  23. Sorry to hear of your loss. I lost two cats within one year (some time ago), and know that feeling.
  24. Jam Session in Swingville (Prestige) has some good Pee Wee on the second half. Pee Wee takes a particularly fine solo backed by some nice chording by Danny Barker on "Years Ago".
  25. Hampton Hawes Vol. 1: The Trio Cover design by Pauline Annon
