I've probably got more time for Giddins than others here, but yes--without one smidgen of intended flattery, I would rather see Larry Kart writing for them. That was the first name that came to my mind, also.

as if something like that exists at the New Yorker. It used to exist. Not in years. Maybe the occasional article. I wish there was - it's about time that magazine got a bit of culture happening. You're right about recent years. I was referring to the time when Whitney Balliett was at the New Yorker. Of course there are those here who would say that there was no jazz critic position at The New Yorker even when he was there.

Yeah. Donald Byrd deserves a mention here. A friend played me the Columbia Jazz Messengers back in the 80's, and I remember saying - "that's Donald Byrd on trumpet?" I realized then that I had formed an opinion by hearing the wrong recordings and not searching further - something I've done too many times, unfortunately.

Once heard Stanley Crouch pimping a Wynton recording to a young woman in the downtown NYC Tower.

Allen - It's not necessarily a good thing to have a letter published in the Times. About 20 years ago, I wrote a letter to the Times replying to a column in the sports section about Steve Howe and his drug abuse problem. They printed my letter, but edited it so that it appeared that I said the exact opposite of what I had written, making me look like a complete idiot - or at least a bigger idiot than I sometimes am. I wrote a letter of complaint to the editor, asking them to print my letter as it was written, but I never got a reply or the satisfaction of seeing the original letter in print. I learned a valuable lesson from that.

It may be spam, but at least it's upfront spam. Perhaps Jen will continue to post here and add to other dialogues. I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt for now.

Interesting story, but the fact that Braxton's horn was stolen wasn't so good.

Perhaps he's doing a lot of listening, or else he's totally confused by all of the suggestions and has given up.
