  1. Yeah, I have never minded the conducting crap on this one for some time. You can get it paired with "Things are Swinging" from British EMI on one cd. Now THAT is one fine pairing!
  2. Yes, Things are Swinging is a great one!
  3. These are masterworks!
  4. I'll have to move this higher on my priorities, thanks for the report! I've been mainly listening to her Capitol work but I did pop in the "Black Coffee" ANTHOLOGY recently and enjoyed the hearing. Her voice is just so. . . musical.
  5. I've gotta get it; I'm just waiting for the right time and price. I've heard most of the material. . . great stuff. I've become quite a Peggy fan.
  6. Sheesh! The Prevue cd sounds better to me and has the same material . . . was out years ago!
  7. I would be very surprised if the Lonehill did NOT have the sound which like Brownie I believe is from the original recording of the broadcast or the broadcast itself. Sounds like a bad vacuum tube to me! But it's still listnable; I'm quite tolerant of this sort of stuff.
  8. Yeah David, I really like that musical. . . . !

    Jazz Oracle

I think I have all but the latest two cd set. A fantastic label. Favorites are the Pollocks, the New Orleans bands, the Mannings and . . . well I have a hard time picking favorites, such a great label!
  10. This concert, and the concert in Paris at about this time, have been circulating among collectors. (The Amsterdam has been out on cd as well for some time). GREAT band; great concert.
  11. Okay, I went to see Elektra yesterday. I couldn't resist; I'm a fan of Jennifer Garner's and I liked her depiction of the character in the Daredevil film. (I don't watch Alias though, but she sure does have a unique look and style there). I would have liked to see a different treatment of the character, but the movie delivered for fans of Jennifer. Anyone else take the plunge?

    Sun Ra

He was born in The Magic City! (Here on Earth he was born in Birmingham. He may have been simultaneously born in a Saturnian city).
  13. It's different and better (and cheaper in the long run) than buying the single OJC cds included in the set; the remastering is newer and quite nice really. And Marty is right: the Atlantic Trane set is essential. . . . A killer set in its right.

    Art Taylor

Go figure. I'm just not a Taylor fan really. . . I'd rather hear Cobb. Res gustibus non disputandae sunt.
  15. Yeah, Marian. . .but I wouldn't have considered her overlooked really. . . . Great player, great lady.
  16. Jimmy Jones. Yeah Satin Doll by McCoy. . . I think your guess is probably right Larry. Pousse-Cafe. . . now that makes me think of the musical by Ellington/Strayhorn and the piano playing done on the Audiophile cd version of it by Ellis Larkin and Ellis definitely belongs in this thread as an overlooked pianist.

I think L. Ron Hubbard stole his ideas. Must have been able to get into the safe in the ship.
  18. Nina Simone, Carmen McRae, Jeri Southern.
  19. Yes, for Lady Be Good and for How High the Moon. . . Lady Be Good is almostg enoupgh alone but you have to have How High the Moon! I haven't heard the Mendes but it should be good.
  20. I'm a big Lars fan and I've enjoyed the Swedish jazz I have discovered.
  21. Same WEA folk that have Savoy have Dial.
  22. Very cool! Thanks for posting it!
  23. You can skip the Whiting is my feeling. . . . You have to get the Slim Gaillard! Amazing!

    Jazz & Blues

It's not very simple and there aren't definitive answers (if you ask me). Blues and jazz. . . which came first? Depends on definitions. . . . My money is on blues as a forerunner. Jazz could have numerous wellsprings. . . ragtime. . . nineteenth century brass bands. . . opera? Certainly blues. Anyway, there's reading material out there on the California, New Orleans and other early jazz scenes that make very interesting reading!
  25. By the way, all the time I've been "Super Bad". . . I've felt sort of as if I could be punished at any time!
