  1. You're welcome! Some really nice music has been on these shows by Betty Carter, James Moody, Brubeck and many others!

Clifford: Have you looked at ESP-Disk lately (www.espdisk.com) ? They are reissuing the ESP catalog. I've only bought two (items I didn't have in other formats) (the new Ayler and Heliocentric Worlds Vol. 3) and the sound is excellent.
  3. I was wrong, Jackie is at the end of this month, after Mary Lou Williams and the Maria Schneider shows.
  4. You're missing out. Weekly broadcasts, I have hundreds of good hours of music from this series, thanks to a compadre: http://www.jazzatlincolncenter.org/radio/
  5. What does Austin and Tower Records have to do with my birthday wish? I know you would enjoy France and the French! (Even if you think you wouldn't and your fearless leaders tell you not to!)
  6. Going to be some nice JALC broadcasts in the near future, including Jackie McLean next month.
  7. Jim, personally I don't think that theme from the show IS predominantly ragtime, but swing. I'm hard pressed to think of ragtime that is really like it structurally or performance wise; it really is more like Glenn Miller/Benny Goodman swing to me distilled to a small group in a different instrumentation than say the small Goodman groups. I think the Titanic disc will be interesting as an overview of pop music of the time; looking forward to it. Jim, I'm not sure how conversant you are with early jazz in Chicago and elsewhere. Are you familiar with the Jimmie Noone sides with Earl Hines and Joe Poston? These have a flavor that may be somewhat in line with what you are seeking.
  8. Haven't yet read Divided Soul. This one was pretty breezy in some good ways and interesting. I'd recommend it (especially at the 5 dollars or so I paid for it total through Half.com).
  9. The earliest real tape stereo I know of in jazz is the live material recorded at the Chinese restaurant of Konitz with Tristano that appeared in the Mosaic set. Beautiful sound too! 1955!
  10. I'm just going to pretend I never heard about the possibility of this. . ..
  11. Started happening as far as I can tell in the jazz field around 1957 through 1958, though mono was still the major thing for a long time, and mono records were still released for a decade or longer. I know that there are some stereo jazz recordings (Tristano/Konitz)(recorded but not necessarily released in stereo at the time) as early as 1955. Most of the majors seem to have hit upon it in 1957 . . . ? Columbia did some beautiful beautiful beautiful stereo stuff in 1957 and 1958. . . .
  12. I'm assuming it's true about Janice Gaye . . . cuz I read it in "Mercy, Mercy Me : The Art, Loves and Demons of Marvin Gaye" by Michael Eric Dyson.
  13. Did you know that Britney Spears' sister Jamie Lynn wants to be a singer too? Just a guess on my part. . . .
  14. This Ann. Not this one.
  15. I'll start off. . . . Did you know that Marvin Gaye's second wife, the beautiful Janice Gaye, is Slim Gaillard's daughter? 'Strue!
  16. I'm sure it's great, I'm excited to hear it, I just didn't want to pay a lot for a short cd so I'm glad yourmusic.com has it. The real treat for me on yourmusic.com is the MULTIPLE cd sets for 4.99 a disc. I've spent way too much on some of that action!
  17. 'Sout of print but it's cheap. I ordered me a copy from half.com
  18. Airbee ankok!
  19. Jim, I'm sort of not sure what to recommend just based on that one theme. . . which is really sort of reminiscent TO ME of "In the Mood," seems like a small group white swing song sort of. I've always wondered about this cd and may just pick it up one day, and I think you may find it interesting: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...458201?v=glance (Though it doesn't have clarinet or other horns!)
  20. Mine was spinning for the first time the Marvin Gaye track "(I'm Afraid) The Masquerade is Over" from "The Soulful Moods of Marvin Gaye." (Also appears on the new six cd set of Motown singles, Volume One). The piano intro is. . . a theme from Monk's "Round Midnight." Wasn't expecting it, was so happy to hear it!
  21. Sergio Mendes, "Equinox." Wasn't going to pay full price for this one!
  22. Nothing was really bonus that I can remember about on that two cd "My Funny Valentine" . . . maybe an announcement? Apparently the box set extra material for these two lps is NOT included on the single disc reissues. It doesn't really surprise me. . . they have to have something exclusive to the box set, or they generally do. I really like the box set, and haven't gotten any of the single releases or plan to get them in the future. (Possibly because I have Japanese minilp cds of them? )
  23. This show came on the year we went to Africa. . . I was so excited to see the first few episodes. . . and then whammo. . . . didn't get to see any til about six years later in reruns. It wasn't the same. That eleven year old excited kiddo wasn't around any more! Where did this picture come from! It's a fake. . . right?
  24. REALLY good on vinyl.
  25. Hope it's a great day! If I could afford it I'd send you a ticket for you and your mom to visit the Tower!
