  1. Oblique, and Inventions and Dimensions I will be glad to have in that great RVG sound! Yeah!
  2. Last night was excellent dinner-wise; it was the first time I made one of my wife's specialities "sofrito"--the cuban black bean and tomato dish. It didn't turn out quite as delectable as hers--I didn't quite get the tangy spiceness she does because I was being reticent. But it was delicious enough and really hit the spot over brown rice with some cilantro on top, and a spinach salad. Tonight: Bravissimo brand cheeseless roast vegetable pizza (still have a few more weeks on a low cholesterol diet to go through) with spinach salad and avacado!
  3. Having all the alternates is NOT essential. They do differ from track to track but listening to all these in a row can be tedious. This is among my favorite Pepper however, so I'm glad to have them myself; what I do often with collections like these is program the first alternates to listen to one time, the masters another time, the second alternates the next time, etc. But you may well be served by the one cd from Atlantic/Savoy. Or those two separate older cds, which have slightly better sound (in my opinion at least).
  4. I've gotten to hear the lps via cdr thanks to Tony, and able to compare them to the cd counterparts. The lp version of the "Mingus Presents Mingus" definitely IS stereo; the cds are mono. Odd but there you go. In general both sound very good to me. The lps seem to have a bolder and more vivid sound (as RVG vinyl in general does to my ears) and the cds have a smoother and more mellow sound to them (actually a very good match for my system). Can't go wrong with either, and even the material on earlier Candid cds sounds pretty good!
  5. I know. . . it is hard giving up that cover. The Japanese Savoy two cd sets has even more material, and that cover, but I'm not sure how easy or hard it may be to find.
  6. I'm sorry, I read too fast and didn't realize you were asking about specific titles. If you see them used and cheap, there were two earlier Savoy/Denon cds titled "Surf Ride" and "Two Altos" that reproduced the original fifties lp releases and have great sound!
  7. Books. Lots and lots of books. There aren't many authors I really "collect" any longer, but there are subjects such as jazz and gnosticism that I collect. . . . Books and cds literally surround me in my private areas (as opposed to common areas) at home. And stereo stuff. . . I have too many stereo systems, because I love to hear and learn about the differences. . . . Have settled happily on a main system over time!
  8. Thanks Hans, that's a good link and a great cd to get most of them. There is/was a two cd Japanese release that had more alternates etc. Not necessarily essential unless you're really nutty about this material!
  9. Thanks for the tip; I had forgotten about that movie!
  10. Well, I was specifically referring to the material that has been reissued on Atlantic/Savoy (and Savoy/Denon Japan) by Pepper. Great stuff! I'm a big fan of a lot of the Savoy label, anything by Byrd or Hank Jones or Bird or many others is well worth investigating!
  11. There are a lot of aspects of live music (especially LARGE ENSEMBLE music!) that recordings cannot (and may NEVER) capture!
  12. OR how the producers/Kenton wanted the band to sound on recordings?
  13. I personally think that the Capitol engineers and equipment of the times was top notch, and the sound . . . was probably how the band sounded?
  14. Maynard Ferguson, Come Blow Your Horn, Cameo
  15. Sal, a rare flower of beauty, indeed!
  16. And Hero too. I never used to even imagine going to see this type of movie, but Crouching Tiger made me realize what I was missing!
  17. This was certainly a beautiful movie. Going to have to spring for the dvd.
  18. How's that song go? "She's Got Legs and She Knows How to USE them!"
  19. No kidding on the employment part! The 'feel' of the cinematography and the story telling is different between the two directors, but I feel this compares favorably with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
  20. Mark, thanks for the detailed information. I used to have a few of these series of Commodore material on cassette, and thought they were Columbia for some reason. I love the music, just amazing stuff that Gabler recorded for that label!
  21. I loved seeing this movie. . . . It is quite reminiscent of "Hero" by the same director, but I didn't think it was quite as good a movie, as the storyline and the narrative weren't quite up to that high level. . . . But it was a beautiful beautiful movie. The cinematography is wonderful! I thought the "Echo Dance" was a great cinematic event!
