I know everyone here is a health food nut

Bockwurst with curry sauce? Wow. Interesting. . . -
I'm probably going to get this "Black Coffee" though I think I have almost all the material here and there. . . .You're right on target Peter, great stuff!
-
"Say Buddy, do you want to buy a watch real Cheap?" I always remember that line sung that way . . . it's from Stage Fright, right? The Band. . . what a band.

Kid Ory and Django sets are on the way...
jazzbo replied to DrJ's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I like the Django in Rome set. . . . Nothing groundbreaking, but nice sounding swinging stuff! -
That Warne Marsh release, "Live at Dana Point", has me hooked. Not really able to tell you explicitly why. Sure it's the way that Marsh spins in a swinging web. And the way that Albany plays. And the way that the discs are recorded which are very fresh and real sounding to me. And . . . well it's all that and more. Just a great two disc set that makes me need more Marsh.

I've been listening to some Peggy Lee again lately. I find myself looking at the cover of the "Singles" collection (I have it facing me on a "shelf" on the wall in front of me, right next to the Nat King Cole "Classic Singles" collection) and hearing her voice in my head and then reaching for one of her cds. She's slowly becoming one of my very favorites!

No I understand. . . . I just haven't really listened that hard to that one. It's sort of a "mood inducer" to me. I let it spin a web, and don't study the strands. A friend and I had a talk about smooth jazz a year ago or so ago. Over a few beers, something neither of us usually do (have a few beers any longer that is). And we sort of came to a concensus that electric Miles was a genesis of a lot of smooth jazz. Those were some dark Heinekens!

Well, I'm not sure when I'll get into a position I can listen to this. . . . I'm working though some new things (including the "Elis and Tom" dvd/cd combo from Brazil) and the Ayler box is about to hit and derail my listening and I have to knuckle under and prepare myself and home for a visit from my parents in less than a week. . . . AND I'm not as PICKY as you are, so. . . B-) But if I get a chance I'll listen. . . and report back something.

No I agree. That is one thing I am enjoying in the Billy Harper material you have pointed me to. And just overall I think this is a nicely programmed effort, with the various instrumentation of each track, culminating in the chanting piece. . . . I'm glad that Verve/Impulse put this out.

I know everyone here is a health food nut

Yes, I have to admit that my idea of "fast food" these days is the (McDonald's owned?) Chipotle with their tacos and burritos, and places like Thundercloud Subs, a local (Austin only?) sandwhich shop. Partly it is because having no car and not being near other restaurants like Wendy's and McD's etc. I gravitate to those on my bus route or near my home. And partly it is because my wife is not really a fan of these other places, and we do almost all our eating together (which I am quite happy about). And partly because. . . I didn't grow up eating at those places. I ate mom's food, I ate boarding school and college cafeteria food, I ate grandmas' and my incredible cooking Great Aunt Erma's food, and I soon as a young adult learned to eat my own cooking. . . . And when I go out to eat I really want to eat either Mexican or Indian food. . . . there are a number of great Mexican restaurants we frequent, and one stellar Indian food establishment (the Clay Pit). -
I agree, meditative, calming. . . . I find I lean towards that flavah lately and I find this "GORGEOUS" as Shawn would say. (See, I'm thinking of you Shawn!)

I haven't spun Haunted Heart in a while, but the playing fits in with the whole album flavor to me, and it didn't really suggest "Smooth" so much as it did a forties and fifties buttery Presidential tenor tone interpretation. . . .

I'm really enjoying the new Alice Coltrane. It's nicely recorded. Beautiful music. One person (whose ears I respect) felt it seemed a little safe. Well, maybe. I mean she may have been playing it safe to get it out there and to maybe get another one out behind it (not sure if she's interested in playing that game or not!) BUT I think if it were any less safe we'd have a cd full of tunes like the final track, which is like what she has put out in the last few decades on her own (I still haven't heard one of those, but I bet it is similar. . . ) I especially like the duo with Oran, and man I MISSED that Wurlitzer sound!

John, WD: Many thanks for posting those! -
I must be continuing my weird off the beaten pathness. . .I would choose "Out of the Past."

Say Ed. . . . I feel your pain. I feel a lot as you do, that the final attitude of Tom was a big mistake, and probably costly in more than one instance. Nor do I actually agree that this board is the cat's meow; I really honestly would rather be posting on a pre-cataclysm BNBB. I confess that my enthusiasm for BN output has been somewhat dampened as well. I am lucky in that in most cases I can purchase BN discs at a substantial discount with help of a friend. THAT spurs most of my purchases of material that I already own in cd form. . . . When I don't have the discount available, I don't buy generally speaking. Some aspects of the current reissue program bug me too. McMaster after McMaster. . . I prefer RVG and Addey as remasterers, I get less excited about appearances of items as Connoisseurs as a result. The difference is quite audible in my system and if I had my druthers. . . . I don't. Also some reissue choices just don't make as much sense to me as I think they could, and aspects of curatorship such as changing the status of some recordings from "unissued" to "REJECTED" in the latest discography kindof make me warm under the chin. . . . Anyway, the music is great. The reissue program and its producers. . . used to be better. My two cents.

That's how I hear the sound as well, and it definitely, definitely contributes to my lack of interest in this session. Also I don't think the performance is that great, partly because I don't really think everyone was really "in the same room, on the same page."
-
Hmmmm. . . I've always been severely bored with this one. . . bought it when it was released and the sound doesn't engage me and the players hardly do as well! Must just be me.

There is always the RCA Desmond box which has most of the Mosaic and an additional session with Hall. . . and is cheaper. . . affordable for a station! (Can often be had at less than list price).
