  1. A nice cool morning, after a great dinner with my brothers and sisters-in-law and my two youngest nieces. Never get enough evenings like that! Starting the day off with. . . .Sun Ra “At The Showcase: Live In Chicago 1976-1977” Jazz Detective 2 cd set, disc 1 I’ve grown less and less interested in Sun Ra in the mid-to-late 'Seventies and beyond, picked this one up because I suspected the sound was good and to check out the performances. It’s. . . okay. Not the worst of this vintage I’ve heard performance wise, and the sound is quite good. May go on the trade/sell pile, we’ll see.
  2. Well to be honest this is the first time that Sony/Columbia has sold these--they were only available via European labels before. Somewhat officially and somewhat unofficially depending on who you ask!
  3. Ella & Basie “On the Sunny Side of the Street” Verve cd (German)
  4. That box contains: Paris’ L’Olympia Theater on Monday, March 21; two shows from the next night at Stockholm’s Konserthuset; and one from Copenhagen’s Tivolis Koncertsal three days later, on March 24. These have been released a number of times on various labels including Dragon, Laserlight/Delta. I will say this: they sound their best in this box set.
  5. Fiona has become both blind and deaf . . . she is quite old. She still has an appetite though! She needs constant monitoring and lots of help but we love her and hope she lives forever,
  6. Neil Young “Time Fades Away” Reprise cd This is the most recent cd version, to improve listening compared to my worn LP. This is a sentimental favorite. . . I was at one of these shows. Tete Montoliu “Temas Brasilenos” Ensayo/Muzak (Japan) cd Followed by Followed by Disc 2 this time. Red McKenzie! This cover gave me a scary thought. . . what if we had recordings of Eddie on theramin!
  7. Matt Wilson "That's Gonna Leave A Mark" Palmetto cd Alto Saxophone, Bass Clarinet – Andrew D'Angelo Bass – Chris Lightcap Drums, Vocals– Matt Wilson Tenor Saxophone, Soprano Saxophone, Clarinet – Jeff Lederer Vocals – Felicia Wilson, Henry Wilson, Karlie Bruce, The Swayettes, The Wilson Family Singers
  8. Woke up looking forward to a dinner tonight with my two brothers, their wives, and my two youngest nieces. Never see them enough! It’s beautiful outside! Nice brief walk with Fiona the dachshund. Starting the listening off with a new arrival, Matt Wilson “That’s Gonna Leave A Mark” Palmetto cd
  9. “Zoot Sims Meets Jimmy Rowles–If I’m Lucky” Pablo/OJC cd This is just the right mood and mode for NOW.
  10. 4 hours of it are newly officially released. Other than "Miles in Europe" and the additional track on "Seven Steps" box set the remaining tracks have only been released on bootlegs previously. See this post:
  11. In the past the Japanese versions have been either Blu-Spec CD and then Blu-Spec CD2 versions. I compared one of each to the US versions, thought they sounded better, bought the Japanese editions of each. This one does not indicate that it is a Blu-Spec CD2 version, but the price is good and I've ordered it since it was added to cdjapan last night.* That "hard No" was a response to David's question about the other material with Sam Rivers being reissued officially. It has not. *In this case this appears to be the Non-Japanese edition with additional Japanese language booklet material added; Sony Japan does not appear to be producing their own version. Bummer.
  12. Another cool morning. Fiona the dachshund let me go back to sleep a few hours, a welcome thing. Re-listening to this release from this year. I really like it–it strongly reminds me of Dizzy Gillepsie’s “Portrait of Duke Ellington” from decades ago. Brian Landrus “Plays Ellington & Strayhorn” Palmetto cd
  13. This is a great new release on Palmetto featuring wonderful Ellington and Strayhorn material with baritone sax, guitar, bass and drums and a woodwind ensemble. Excellent rich sound as well. Brian Landrus “Plays Ellington & Strayhorn” Palmetto cd
  14. I am excited--I will order the Japanese version when available (I have Japanese versions of the other 7).
  15. Eddie Condon “The Town Hall Concerts Volume Nine” Jazzology 2 cd set, disc 1 Incredible personnel on this Volume Nine. 19. Re-watching "The Expanse" Season 5
  20. A cool, still morning. One of “our” owls is making his distinctive call in the wooded side lot we have. I love to hear these birds! Fiona the dachshund is a bit fiesty, but indicates she’ll settle down soon. As I listen I’m finishing up selecting about 35 (mostly Japanese Blue Note) cds for sale. I need the space and new versions have come in or will be soon arriving from Japan. Joe Lovano “Bird Song” Blue Note cd This is a session I really enjoy–the two drummers are really well arranged and add a special sauce to this. And the focus on Parker material is successful and seems innovative. The lovely Ms Spalding sounds great here too–her bass is deep sounding and her playing precise. Joe Lovano, Saxophones James Weidman, Piano Esperanza Spalding, Bass Otis Brown III, Drums Francisco Mela, Drums
  21. I keep returning to this excellent disc. It’s like soul food for me. Jovino Santos Neto “Por Causa de Voce”
  22. Count Basie "Basie Jam" Pablo/OJC cd Louie really stands out on this one for me this time around. No wonder he's featured on the cover. The Basie swing is a nice propellant for the day.
  23. Miles Davis “Sorcerer” Mobile Fidelity Lab SACD 800×800 108 KB Beautiful weather this morning. Stayed up later than usual last night watching a historical event, and up earlier than usual today. Will fade later! This SACD sounds so good!
  24. All of "Always Know" has been reissued on cd. Both as "Always Know" and in separate releases. https://www.discogs.com/release/2549281-Thelonious-Monk-Always-Know
