  1. Ah, Lateef. . . I began seriously listening to him about ten years ago . . . I think his roots go a bit before hardbop, in the bop and swing world. . . though he came to his own in the hardbop era as a part of "other tributaries". .. Mingus and his own fusion of world sounds and bop and swing. . . His Savoy stuff is what I like the most, especially "Prayer to the East"---that tenor solo on "Lover Man" is among my very favorite tenor solos. I've been getting into Brazilian music (mainly bossa nova) a lot thanks to encouragement and guidance and resources from JimR. And I've finally gotten around to the Lunceford Orchestra as a study. . . wow.
  2. Well really, to include the unreleased material they may have and be able to, it would be a big box, studio or live, and I think they feel they are better served in many ways by making a series of single releases (that I think must sell alright, more perhaps than a big box might). This is just my guessing from the way they are doing things, and the amount of alternates they are including with each new reissue, etc. I'm going to go outside my normal likes here and say at this point I'm wishing they just continue the single releases; I've bought all the released stuff several times, and don't relish rebuying yet again most of it to get what rare stuff they might include in a box. . . . They're doing a good job with the single releases and frankly I'm surprised to see so many more on the horizon so soon!
  3. I'm not going to tread a foot into the Hoffman forum. Greg, the king of polarity, is a denizen there; I'm sure he'll hip them to the drill! The polarity would affect tonal balance more than any "narrowing". . . but Greg knows it all and will set him straight!
  4. Chris, I got JimR to listen to another Joyce cd or two; he had heard one that didn't impress, and then heard those that DID, so he was on the hunt! Yes, she is the Joyce from Brazil. Angela Strehli I used to see at least once a month for a few years here in Austin; she had the best darned band around with George Barns and Sara Brown and Denny Freeman and sometimes Derek O'Brien. I used to go dancing with a couple of gals I worked with and be right up by the stage. I was drumming in a few blues-rock bands then, and seeing her band over and over was like a master's course!
  5. Well Mnytime I don't have, or want to have, cable, so I don't see those shows on TVLand.
  6. People actually consider her a sex symbol? Wow. I've never seen S. W. A. T and many other shows in this thread. I think I only ever watched SNL during the seventies! It was the eighties that TV captured me. There aren't many tv shows I really want to see again that aren't readily available. The Dick Van Dyke Show---yeah, that would be a hoot to see. I like the early years of Bewitched too and haven't seen any of that show for a long time. There was one show that was on that I'd like to see again because it just lasted a short period and then disappeared and I've never seen a minute of it since: "City of Angels." Was an attempt to be Chandleresque. I remember it being entertaining for fans of his work. And there was one recent show I wished would have succeded, by the makers of "Seinfeld": "It's Like You Know." Also, I didn't get to see too many of Bonnie Hunts' shows, and I'd like to; I find her very attractive in many ways! (I think she writes and acts well.)
  7. Ånother good photo Chris! Here's Mary Osborne!
  8. Ånother good photo Chris! Here's Mary Osborne!
  9. This is a nice album. Just a good time feel, and a nicely played batch of songs with swing and feeling. "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" is always a treat, and I like this one; Tommy and Lou are just putting the tune out there, with a light bounce. Both horns have such great SOUND on this lp. And the rhythm section is good, I like their interpretation of the souljazzy beat of the time. Not something everyone has to have, but it sure would be nice to see this and the other other Argos by Lou in a nice little package, a small box set. . .
  10. Hasn't been too hard to find, here it is on cdnow: REVENGE!
  11. I have this, and have been enjoying it since its cd release. Haven't made many guesses re: personnel or tunes. As for personnel, I would tend to guess in the direction of Dizzy Big Band sidemen. . . .
  12. I don't think we'll see it. . .it would be an awfully big box!
  13. These are still the initial Monk family cds (I'm just reacting to "continuing to issue cds.) I have them all, and I like them all; rabid Monk fans who don't demand sonic purity will. (Though most sound excellent.)
  14. Angela Strehli

  16. Yes, this cd is well worth grabbing; excellent sound, excellent notes, excellent playing!
  17. The excellent "Bill Dodge" transcriptions are in fact in print on cd, on the Circle label by George H. Buck.
  18. Chuck, the new reissue is better in sound, definitely, and restores the original lp selections. I'm a Velma fan. . .I don't find her grating. I always enjoy her in this band.
  19. Freddie Hubbard.
  20. One of the best ever, I agree. Very sad news.
  21. Yes. No. Maybe. Remember. . . Twardzik/Freeman, no release yet (and I asked Michael about that and he said "get the Japanese cd.) The Quebec "From Hackensack to Englewood Cliffs." . . . . Admittedly these were not JRVGs, but. . . . Yes. No. Maybe! is how I see it.
  22. Well be sure to let us know what you think Ed. I had a really fun week or two when I first got this set !
