  1. That's all nicely said, but I'm not sure that was what it was all about. But no matter. It happened. Thank God. We have this music to enjoy for as long as we want to.
  2. I'd beg to differ, strongly. It's style, but it's also something else. It is about people (especially Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown) if you ask me. Odd people. Broken people, perhaps. People though. This one is about. . . revenge. Motivation. Fantastic (in the sense of fantasy as well) drive and strength. And there is great narrative skill in the style. Just the way I see it.
  3. Nope, don't miss my Adam's Apple TOCJ; I think both the JRVG and the RVG sound better.
  4. But man. . . there's a part of me that wonders what that would have sounded like ever since I read about it. . . that might be a Beatles album I could really dig~!
  5. You know the answer to that one.
  6. Well, I saw this today. . . . It's quite a movie! Not for the faint-hearted in more ways than one. But some exciting filming, some excellent use of music, some very good acting. Over the top, way over the top, as is the whole sort of genre that it is wallowing in. I'm very glad I saw it! I'll definitely see Volume Two.
  7. I like the VeeJay stuff fine, I actually prefer it to the Blue Notes to be honest. I think this stuff is music of high order. . . but I don't "need" it as much at all any more compared to how I used to want to listen to it in the past.
  8. I'll admit the ballads have some emotion to them, but overall this is music that does not move my heart these days. I used to be immensely fond of Shorter's work, and I still am fond of it but my listening needs and wants seem to have changed. Just as you are now discovering some of Wayne's and Lee's Blue Note sides, I've known these for years, and they have lost the allure of discovery for me, and other items have that allure to me now! So as you say, different perspectives as well as tastes color our choices.
  9. It boils down to personal preferences I guess. I don't feel the "heart" in Shorter's music that I feel in for example Pres' and Birds' and Duke's and Strays' and many another's music, and I begin to need to feel that heartbeat. Shorter's music more and more seems one of the mind to me, and it is great stuff, but it doesn't fulfill some listening needs, and I usually reach for others, and into the Brazilian and blues genres these days for that fulfillment. I'm not knocking his music at all, but it holds less and less interest for me. All that. . .may change!
  10. The only reason I want to go to NYC again someday (lived there when I was two months to two years old while my dad was at Union Seminary!) is to see Satch's house. A friend and I have a desire to go together like a pilgrimage. . . but we have to find a way to afford it and to afford the trip with womenfolk who won't want to spend more than ten minutes there, and we'll want to spend a few whole days. . . . No easy answer!
  11. I'm all for a new release of live material only released in bits before. The Mysterioso release could be quite superflous if the component recordings are extant and released in entirety! I can never never never have enough Monk!
  12. I guess I'd have to say that many of the Freddie Hubbard's have been disappointing to me. I'm just not a fan of his style, his soloing seems full of sound and fury signifying nothing to me. I always enjoy the lineups and wish another trumpeter were there instead. Perhaps this is blasphemy, but that's just how it is for me; his work doesn't really grab me. Gotta also say the BabyFace Willettes don't disappoint me, but I never had high expectations for them and I don't reach for them much.
  13. Well it's nice that you are discovering some of this stuff! I've cooled in my ardor for Shorter's work. . . over the last decade I've slowly been less moved by his more abstract serpentine approach (and the work of other players who have been influenced/transformed by it) and respond more to a more swinging and emotional type of playing. Adam's Apple is a very good one of his Blue Notes; the Rowles tune is a favorite, and the really driving rhythm section on this puts a lot of music out there and spurs Wayne on. Perhaps this and Night Dreamer are my favorites of the Blue Notes. Rather nice to discover it now, as this RVG version sounds fantastic in comparison to other digital editions to my ears.
  14. No, I'm not a member. I'm not a "joiner" type. And I'm not a Chronicle reader so I happily miss a lot of things like this! -_- My film watching is mainly of new movies that are "dates" with my wife. Not having a car we carefully choose what we can and will see by how easily we can get to where they are showing. I don't rent many at all; I buy a few though most are music related.
  15. She actually has her sexappeal downplayed if you ask me, which is a feat I guess. I'm with you on Clooney; O Brother made my eyes get wide open to his talent. And my wife will see ANYTHING he's in!
  16. Cool. One less person standing in line ahead of me! I'm going to pay half of ten, matinee prices is almost all I ever pay the last five years or more! And Mystic River and School of Rock had nothing I could see to recommend themselves to me. . .
  17. Well both stars are sexy as hell to target audiences. And they use that charisma well. I think you will enjoy the movie; my wife really did. I made the over thirty remark because I noticed that two couples around us just didn't get some of it. . . maybe it's just a fluke. . . maybe not.
  18. Saw Intolerable Cruelty this afternoon. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Fun, clever, well-acted. Nice date movie, if your date is over thirty . . .
  19. I'm hoping you are wrong too Jim. I think the dialog will be adequate to good; I've read that it makes good use of Samurai film style banter, and what I've heard seems intriguing. From what I have seen of various trailers, the FILMING looks fantastic. I've become more and more aware of cinematography and this will be fun to watch in that regards. Saw "Intolerable Cruelty" today which was a really nice hoot of a movie.
  20. My "Ugly Beauty: Monkified Bossa Nova" project is so stalled it's now constipated! Patronage would be appreciated as well. B)
  21. Just got the message Jac, and replied. Yes, kung fu films. . . I've never really been a fan. BUT recently thanks to Shawn I have become a Jackie Chan fan. . . not necessarily the same thing!
  22. Tomorrow I plan to see this with a few friends, a "guy thing" afternoon showing at a theater that serves drinks and food. . . . I'm expecting it to be a real style fest and quite a movie. The trailers have me very interested. I know it's going to be full of violence and gore. . . . Normally movies full of violence and gore don't get me into the theaters. . . . But after a long time between films, I'm interested to see this Tarrantino one. I really have liked Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown (not a fan of ---don't have the stomach for--- Resevoir Dogs) for the art of his filming more than anything; he does something that no one else quite does. Anyone seen it yet? Anyone plan to? Anyone vehemently opposed to seeing it?
  23. I too like both Charisma and Caramba, liking Caramba a bit more. But both are very nice albums!
  24. Alright! My work here is done! Yes, I really resonated with that experience as well. I never had anything like that experience with the fish "amulet" happen, BUT if something had, I would have TRIPPED OUT in a similar manner!
