  1. Well, you could have taken the chance that Dave at Tower would have copies. . . if OMAR hadn't gotten there first and snatched them all! Damn you Omar! Just kidding Omar. . . wish I could be there at 10 in the morning to hang!
  2. I like this, as I like all those albums on the Larry Young Mosaic, but I can certainly see why some listeners such as Dan DON'T. Different than many another Morgan date! I'm going to have to dig this out and listen to it again! I remember (now unfortunately the late) Eddie Gladden doing a good job here!
  3. Coool, thanks for listing. Some nice Helen Merrill to look for!
  4. Mix a big pitcher of martinis, and bring it over with all the other colorful neighborhood characters in tow. They seem like they'd enjoy drinks and some good stories. . . .
  5. This was the first of the latest batch of RVGs I grabbed, and completes my Blue Note Powell in great sound replacement plan (all the RVGs, and a Superbit TOCJ by McMaster.) I've had this session on vinly, and two other cd versions. . . it's an odd session. As noted, not much variety in composition, and the compositions are . . . well . . .ODD. I've grown to really like it but I remember when I first got it and went. . . "Damn, this is some strange writing!" Very Powell in the way that Monk cds are always very Monk, but Powell cds are not always this very Powell! (Does that make sense?) The RVG sounds GREAT!
  6. Wow, for a minute there I thought I was going to be able to save some money and pass on these . . . because they suck!
  7. Mike in my opinion, Shirley was a very consistent and consistently good player. Almost any of her OJC cds will please, I wish more of her Imulses were available cheaply, and I haven't heard this Candid release, ever, but I bet it's good. Her latest (or one of her latest) OJC cd releases, "Like Cozy," has been getting a lot of play in my machines. She plays some piano as well as organ on this one.
  8. CONGRATS!
  9. I'm with you guys. I love all piano jazz, and stride is an important part of that for me. Dick Wellstood. . . WHOA NELLIE!
  10. Well, I really think Water did their usual fantastic job on Black Rhythm Happening which I received today. Can't wait to hear Ghetto Music; hope it is released soon!
  11. I thought the Eastwood film was pretty darned good. I sort of wish he had hired a professional interviewer; he didn't get much out of several of those pianists himself!
  12. I enjoy it Red as well. And I enjoy listening to my Jutta Hipps at the Hickory House and my Golden Eight cds too. . .these have been on cd, albeit from Japan only.
  13. Brad, you've been a true friend and my thanks for all your contributions! Many more happy returns!
  14. Mark, you won't be the first to like Night of the Cookers. I'm there before you. It's not a total stinker, and has grown on me over the years. I"m interested to hear the RVGs.

    Billy Harper

The two Eddie Gales, soon to be released on Water, are well worth a study. And the Harper is worth a search, a very good session. I need more Harper, this is the only one of his as a leader that I have. And yeah, I agree with Jim, I was going to add before his posts "surely you have the Max?"
  16. Two musical sistahs:
  17. I think we're just playing Dr. J! We've heard the news before. . . on another board in another galaxy far far away perhaps. . . .
  18. Wow! If this is REALLY TRUE, her mother would have to be EXTRAORDINARILY BEAUTIFUL!
  19. I think it is correct that many didn't "get" him at the time. And I think that bitterness over his success played a part, that's just my guess from some of what I have read and seen. I wish he had lived another few decades at least! He was moving into waters that would have really made interesting music if he could have gotten it released (I'm not sure he could have done that with either Jeffries or Douglas though.)
  20. I hope that day comes, the complete Basie on Columbia. . . I'll spring for that one too. In the meantime, I like this one bcause the sound is so SWEET and it is bringing Pres back to my foreground!
  21. "I think I may be the best guitarist sitting in this chair"~! Yes, humility was exhibited often in his manner and character. The good news Brad is that the versions of his material released by the family now are in fantastic sound compared to earlier digital versions; I think you'll have fun hearing and exploring them. (Also there are some mail order only items that are worth investigating --especially "Morning Symphony Ideas"--from the family at the link below) http://www.daggerrecords.com/
  22. Brad, glad you caught the Hendrix bit; I have it taped and will watch it this weekend. Hendrix was a marvel, and in the last few years I have been collecting all the unreleased material that I can from him, and there is a startling amount of it, and it is astonishingly good. The Cavett show interviews (and performances) in their entirety is available and worth seeing. He was indeed a softspoken man with DEEP things to say; the liner notes to some releases (especially the "Stages" Reprise box set) and several books (especially "Cherokee Mist") outline the fact that he had a real insight (in my opinion) into the political, religious and cultural forces of his age and a fascinating viewpoint. And he made music as no one else has! His cd in the "Blues" cd series in cahoots with this series of films is really something else!
  23. To me there's no contest: the most recent Columbia release. I dislike cleaned up easy on the ears music from discs, I think that two cd set was da bomb.
  24. Peter, here's the skinny on the Basie Pablo box: http://www.fantasyjazz.com/html/basie.html It's a good overview. For some (and I pretty much fall into that camp) it can serve as about all you really need to have for the Pablo era.
