Yesterday evening we got about an inch of snow but the temperature in the 20s felt good! We took a nice walk before a late dinner. Colder now, 11 but should make it up to 20 this afternoon. I’ll take it. Starting off with a cd I haven’t heard for some time, which is making me realize again what a fantatic aitist Connie Kay was.Took me a while to realize his always appropriate accompaniment. “Milt Jackson” Prestige/OJC cd

On to Tom Harrell “Oak Tree” High Note cd I love Tom Harrell’s music more and more. Re-listening to his discs they seem to open up to me and reveal new subtle “cool” aspects. I really like all his High Note releases.

Mario Adnet “Jobiim Jazz” Adventure Music cd Adventure Music has a consistently excellent house sound to their releases and I wanted to hear how it is presented in the system today. Mario Adnet is an excellent player and arranger and I share his love for Jobim’s music–this is a wonderful listen.

I’ve been wanting to pull this out and listen to this epic length “tune” for two weeks or so. Finally ready. Bob Dylan “Murder Most Foul,” from “Rough and Rowdy Ways” the second disc. Sony Japan 2 cd set.

Duke Ellington and his Orchestra “Newport '58” Mosaic cd An early morning shift to Ellington. Ellington the trickster magician musical painter. After decades of listening to his music putting one of his recordings on to spin is an immediate transition to his colorful world of grace, sinuosity and sass.

On to another Sun Ra, “When Angles Speak of Love” Myth Science cd This material is from 1963 and rather “out there” but an interesting sonic experience. Suits the hour and my mood. This is very 1963 exploratory jazz, sounds like a time capsule to me. Sun Ra: piano, Clavioline, gong Walter Miller: trumpet Marshall Allen: oboe, alto sax, percussion Danny Davis: alto sax John Gilmore: tenor sax, percussion Pat Patrick: baritone sax, percussion Robert Cummings: bass clarinet Ronnie Boykins: bass Clifford Jarvis: drums Tommy “Bugs” Hunter: drums (?), percussion, tape reverb, engineer Ensemble: vocals

My wife fell asleep early and I turned in but woke up and had trouble going back to sleep so I’m doing some listening. I pulled out a Sun Ra reissue from last decade I had little memory of and it’s an interesting date. No bass player, which creates an interesing “space” in the music, sort of wish Ronnie Boykns was present. A radio broadcast from the Philadelpphia period which is one of the final Ra periods I am really interested in. Lots of Ra piano and good Gilmore and Allen playing. Sun Ra “Of Abstract Dreams” Strut cd

Now playing The Bill Evans Trio “Haunted Heart: The Legendary Riverside Studio Recordings” Craft Recordings 3 cd set, disc 1 I love this set and think that the sonics are top-notch.

We live in Munson Township, just up the hills from Chardon, and we usually get a little more snow than Chardon. So we have gotten over 102" this season. That's a heavier winter than in over a decade.
-
Cold! The city of Chardon is reporting 102" of snow received this winter. We live in the hills above Chardon and usually get a little more. This is a heavy winter indeed. More snow predicted today, perhaps not a lot. I’m getting in on the fun among jazz fans and listening to the final disc in the Tower Records Edition SACD set of Miles Davis “Complete Live at the Plugged Nickel.” Music I’ve enjoyed for decades now.

I've never really been a Bruce fan. I've had women in my life who are, and I've heard a lot. None-the-less i think his intent here is to "expose" and perhaps move a person or two. He's been outspoken against this administration before--this is not an isolated incident. May he awaken a nerve or two.
