  1. Most would consider the layout of my entire collection to be idiosyncratic, or weird. It's mostly chaotic. No rhyme or reason. About a third is in a climate-controlled storage unit, much of which has not been rooted through or listened to for seven years. Just a situational thing. I did choose that third to be stored wisely. The rest is jammed back into two different areas of my house much to my wife's chagrin and uneasy tolerance. For some reason most of my Miles Davis collection, nearly every single Blue Note and Japanese EMI releases, the entirety of my Bethlehem label collection (nearly every title) and nearly all of my Impulse collection are separate and together but the rest are willy-nilly. I like it this way. I go through my shelves over and over again and shift things around and pull out handfuls to play.
  2. It's the birthday of someone whose music is very important to my listening world so. . . . Duke Ellington "Unknown Session" Columbia cd (from the second box set of Columbia Albums). Great relaxed swinging stuff.
  3. Jefferson Airplane "Crown of Creation" Culture Factory cd Many dislike these Culture Factory cds, but they sound pretty good to me on my system.
  4. Um no. In Ethiopia if it was broadcast at all--it wasn't--it would have been in English with Amharic subtitles, or overdubbed in Amharic. But there was very little TV broadcast and it did not include many American shows. I think in the over two years we were in Addis Ababa I watched about four hours of TV. There was not one in the home. I'm not finding the exchange funny so I'm out.
  5. I am glad you enjoy it. To me it's an insult. Even as a kid, when I saw a few episodes before we went to Ethiopia I was like "WTF."
  6. Duke Ellington "Money Jungle" Universal Japan UHQCD Brighter (mostly in a good way) than the US cd version with the same mastering. Fantastic music to listen to after a long spell between spins. 7. This one again. My US cd copy is in storage and has been for seven years(!) so I've missed this recording and am glad to have it to hear again. I suspect this UHQCD of what I think is the same mastering sounds better but can't yet compare. Charles Mingus "Pre Bird" Universal Japan UHQCD
  8. Oy. I may be in the minority. . . I have zero love for Adam West Batman.
  9. Charles Mingus "Pre Bird" Universal Japan UHQCD
  10. Shabaka and the Ancestors "Wisdom of Elders" This one really gets me. The next from them too.
  11. I needed to hear another Coleman Hawkins, so I pulled out this SACD, "Wrapped Tight" by Analogue Productions. Another fine one indeed.
  12. "Coleman Hawkins with the Red Garland Trio" Swingville A nice pairing!
  13. "Johnny Hodges, Soloist, with Billy Strayhorn and THE Orchestra" Verve cd Beautiful. I find this particular US cd sounds better with the phase "OUT" on my DAC.
  14. (Rahsaan) Roland Kirk "Now please don't You Cry, Beautiful Edith" Universal Japan Verve cd What a lovely title for an album. And what a release! One of my favorite Kirk albums pre-Atlantic. RRK with: Bass – Ronnie Boykins Drums – Grady Tate Piano – Lonnie Smith Producer – Creed Taylor
  15. Paula Morelenbaum "Telecoteco" cd Wow. This one always fascinates me and it's one of those modern recordings that sound incrementally better as my system improves. It has never sounded better in my system than now--the Purple fuse I added to my SACD transport has been a nice improvement. Layers and layers of interesting sound.
  16. Didn't know about the Proper set... usually not much use to collectors. There was only this one volume of Tristano on Masters of Jazz--I am sure they intended to have more but the label folded not too long afterwards.
  17. Jason Palmer "Rhyme and Reason" disc 2 Bass – Matt Brewer Drums – Kendrick Scott Tenor Saxophone – Mark Turner Trumpet, Composed By – Jason Palmer
  18. Freddy Cole "This and That" High Note cd I'm really becoming a Freddy Cole fan.
  19. Great. I bought Reincarnation too, forgot to add that, and the newest Cecil Taylor Candids as well. I didn't buy any of the Mingus Impulse titles as I have those on Analogue Productions SACDs and really like the sound of those. (And I confess, I am not as crazy about the Impulse Mingus titles as his work for other labels--with the exception of Play Piano which I adore).
  20. I should get Pre-Bird, Town Hall Concert and Mysterious Blues this week from cdjapan. I expect the Candid to sound as splendid as the most recent reissues do.
  21. This release would be of interest to Tristano fans and collectors: it contains 11 tracks that are on "acetate" and seem to be privately recorded (no label affiliation) in Chicago before the Keynote sides were recorded, "test sides" for the Emmett Carles Sextet in May '45 and privately recorded piano solos from June '46: Lennie Tristano "Volume 1--1945-1946" Masters of Jazz France cd 1 Emmett Carls Sextet– Tea For Two 3:22 2 Emmett Carls Sextet– Tea For Two 2:59 3 Emmett Carls Sextet– Blue Lou 2:55 4 Emmett Carls Sextet– These Foolish Things 2:36 5 Emmett Carls Sextet– These Foolish Things 2:39 6 Emmett Carls Sextet– It's The Talk Of The Town 2:15 7 Emmett Carls Sextet– It's The Talk Of The Town 3:20 8 Lennie Tristano– Yesterdays 3:10 9 Lennie Tristano– What Is This Thing Called Love? 2:53 10 Lennie Tristano– Don't Blame Me 2:54 11 Lennie Tristano– I Found A New Baby 2:51 Bass – Chubby Jackson (tracks: 1 to 7) Drums – Don Lamond (tracks: 1 to 7) Piano – Lennie Tristano Tenor Saxophone – Emmett Carls (tracks: 1 to 7) Trombone – Earl Swope (tracks: 1 to 7) Trumpet – Marky Markowitz (tracks: 1 to 7)
