  1. I never saw him, but one of my first three jazz LPs (all received at once) was his fantastic "Blues Shout" on Atlantic which influenced my jazz. discovery..
  2. Leo Wright "Soul Talk" Atlantic/Water Records cd Leo was such a cool player. And. . . Kenny Burrell!
  3. Thanks Jim. I'm actually doing well. I got to spend the last nine years with my Dad and develop a friendship I never dreamed I would have. And he has been bed-ridden in Hospice for 13 months, it is not right for anyone to be bed-ridden that long. He was a fantastic man I am going to celebrate rather than be sad over. That's the plan. Thank you!
  4. Count Basie "Straight Ahead" GRP Checkmates cd
  5. "Come Rain or Shine" . . . those lyrics have been real to me in my life, as trite as they may seem.
  6. Tyrone Washington "Do Right" P-Vine cd
  7. Don Wilkerson "Preach Brother!" Blue Note Japan 24Bit by RVG What a band!
  8. Miles Davis "Porgy and Bess" Columbia LP Listening to my Dad's copy of this. I lost him on Monday evening and wanted to hear this, which we listened to together many times. He gave this to me when he went all cd, and I have better sounding digital copies but this still sounds pretty darned good.

Whaling City Sounds put this out.
  10. I would say it was recorded for this concert, then for the Impulse album.

  13. Yes, I tend to really like the length of Mingus studio productions without editing, but the live things can be a bit much unless you pretend to be there seeing the music performed--I think being there the lengths would seem appropriate but on record a bit less so.
  14. The stubborn mule genius of Charles Mingus on display on a Blue Note cd that really does improve and expand on the United Artist LP. Flawed but powerful music. The emotion and drive is very apparent and one could only wish that more time to master the arrangements could have happened. Schuller's "Epitaph" revisits most of this . . .it's a fascinating set as well but it lacks Mingus. Charles Mingus "Complete Town Hall Concert" Japan UHQCD -- uses '94 Malcolm Addey mastering as far as I can tell.
  15. It's been a long time since I have spun this one. For kicks I read a handful of reviews of this. Reviews are kindof weird and all over the place. It's a wonderful album. . . moody and yet yielding much from a close listening and re-listening. Cassandra Wilson "New Moon Daughter" Blue Note cd
  16. Only the LP set is "limited."
  17. I like these Black & White more than the Imperial, which are great. Spann I know well as a sideman--he was excellent.
  18. I couldn't find much about him. I'm looking forward to the set.
  19. He does have a discogs.com page.
  20. Cassandra Wilson "Traveling Miles" Blue Note cd Re-visiting this old friend.
  21. I've been away from the Brown and Milburn sets too long--I have them, haven't spun anything from them in years. I have the material in the other two on other sources. . . love the T-Bone Walker!!!
  22. Duke Ellington "1947-1952 Vol. 4" I LOVE this five disc set. So much of so much!
  23. A friend of mine called this Jobim's "most Ellingtonian" album and I think he's on to something. So I'm playing it today. Antonio Carlos Jobim "Tide" Universal Japan SHM-CD. This and "Stone Flower" are kissing cousins. I love the Jobim and Deondata collaborations.
