Weather Report "Sweetnighter" Columbia LP I still listen to this LP I bought when this title was first released. Has held up remarkably well. Love this music, one of my favorite from this band.

Antonio Carlos Jobim "Stone Flower" CTI/King Records Japan cd RVG remastered version. This is a favorite that I haven't played in maybe a month. . . overdue for a revisit! This time the RVG cd version, which I like a lot. This disc also helps me to gauge where my system is at and there have subtle improvements in the sound due to some changes.

Just arrived via DHL: Warner Japan has reissued the four disc Aretha Franklin "Don't Fight the Feeling: Aretha Franklin and King Curtis Live at the Fillmore West" that was a limited edition Rhino "Hand Made" set years ago. I always wanted this and missed it til now. (In 2005 Japan released an SHM-CD version, this one appears to be just cd).

I don't know if I have ever recounted my V.S.O.P. experience. I saw them in Cleveland. Waited patiently with excitement. This was at an amazing venue, a revolving stage. There was a long wait for the band to appear. . . it turns out that Freddie's plane had been delayed and he didn't yet show. Finally Tony, Ron, Wayne and Herbie came out and played two numbers. . . it was such a joy to hear them and see them! My first experience with live jazz of such caliber. And then finally Freddie arrived. He tottered to the stage and it seemed evident that Freddie had had a few as he addressed the audience. They launched into play. . . during Freddie's solo a few numbnuts started heckling Freddie. I distinctly heard one say "Miles would not have played that." Freddie erupted in an angry fuselage of words in return, put his trumpet down on a stool and stormed off the stage. The band finished up that number, took a few bows. . .and that was that. Great while it lasted!

Gerry Mulligan and his Sextet "Mainstream" Japan Universal cd UCCU-8221 released last week, uses 2002 master. This Sextet is a killer working ensemble, great on the released live and studio recordings.

This was a good day. . .Lucinda was off from Wednesday til today and I didn't get to listen much. I listened as much as I could today. I finished up the day of listening with a clean modern recording that was a bit polite but had some great late Joe Williams singing on it, Milt Jackson "The Prophet Speaks" And wrapped it up with a beloved recording that is the opposite, a swamp of sound and exploration, Miles Davis "Bitches Brew," this time the Mobile Fidelity SACDs.

I'm always amazed at the facility of his playing and his stage and session "presence." I consider him one of the greats. . . I'd put him in the "middleweight" category that Hank Mobley got boxed into. His extroverted personality and his obvious passion for music cannot be hidden and is very much enjoyed. His band leadership was solid and his ear and eye for talent sharp. I need to play his music again soon. I get into phases with artists where I dig deeply and listen long. . . it's been a while since Cannon has occupied one of these phases, I should correct that. Japan just reissued cd editions from last decade that are worth examining if they are new to one.
