Moncef Genoud Trio “Pop Songs” Muzak Japan cd

On to another disc from the “Enjoying the Ride” sixtieth anniversary Grateful Dead box set, Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, Uniondale, NY (3/16/73), disc 3 I was in the mood for a “Dark Star” and this one hits the spot.

Continuing the “heartbeat jazz” pace with this album that I didn’t know existed until last week, and glad I found it. Ballads associated with Trane, sung supported only by piano and bass. Sweet. “I Wish I Knew – Yvonne Walter Sings The Coltrane Ballads” Muzak Japan HQCD 603×598 63.9 KB

Adonis Rose Trio + One “For All We Know” Storyville cd The “+ One” is the lovely Gabrielle Cavassa. This is certainly a nice and gentle way to begin another hot day. This could definitely be marketed as a Cavassa album. The trio supports her quite ably, and the recording is very balanced.

Congratulations! A wonderful achievement.

Although I'm proud of the position Bruce is planting himself in public at this time, he's never been an interest of mine. This is an intriguing, attractive set I bet for true fans, previously unreleased albums that were all sewn up and ready to go--I can think of a few artists I would really like to see something like that from and would probably pony up the high cost (I hardly spend my money on anything else, don't drink, go out much at all, etc.)

Playing Joshua Redman’s “Words Fall Short” for a second time. A work that is growing on me.

“For The Last Time - Ruby Braff’s Historic Final Performance With Scott Hamilton” Arbors 2 cd set, disc 1 I pulled a handful of Ruby Braff cds from the shelves and will listen to them over the next weeks. He was a continuously interesting player, always seriously working the traditional jazz field with sincere aritstry. He certainly ended his performing career on a high point with these recordings.

Chick Corea & Origin “Live at the Blue Note” Stretch Records promo cd This is the single cd version of the material in the box set of the whole week’s output. Great music in great vivid sound.

Chick Corea & Origin “Change” Stretch cd Corea’s work with Origin remains one of my favorites of his. This session precedes the recordings at the Blue Note club; the band is the same except Adam Cruz replaces Jeff Ballard on drums at the Blue Note. Wanted to hear some Dexter after seeing an hour long “documentary” “Before Midnight” about the making of the film “Round Midnight.” Dexter Gordon “Montmartre 1964” Storyville cd Dexter Gordon (ts & vo) Tete Montoliu (p) Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (b) Alex Riel (dr) Recorded at Jazzhus Montmarte 1964 Edit to add: this is one of the really good live Dexters of the period. Tete and Dexter both make some great quotes, and Bobby Timmons should be flattered. NHOP is so well-presented here and this trio makes a pocket that Dexter seems to enjoy sitting in. I find this is one of those few discs that sound better with the "Phase" in the "Out" position on my DAC.

Joshua Redman “Words Fall Short” Blue Note cd Well-recorded and nicely composed this is a new release I am enjoying. Melissa Aldana contributes very ably, and the blend of the beautiful voice of the beautiful Gabrielle Cavassa and Redman’s tenor on the final track is so well presented. . . wow. Followed by “Herb Ellis meets Jimmy Giuffre” Verve Elite cd I had forgotten what a neglected gem this album is. First, Ellis’ sound is just what I love in a jazz guitar. And the arrangements have such delicate texture and grace and the engineering portrays them so romantically. . . the stellar cast of West Coast players also execute them with heart and accuracy. A great album!

Decided to start early as it’s cool and it is going to be hot this afternoon! This was in the transport and I’m playing it again–a great disc in a set of three great discs! Charles Mingus “The Lost Album From Ronnie Scott’s,” Resonance Records 3 cd set, disc 3 I was listening in awe and imagining how amazing it would be if each of the 1964 European tour releases were recorded and mastered with such clarity.
