  1. I wanted to hear a Blue Note with a reverberant sound so I chose this EMI Japan cd that has a Paris recording and seems to actually be a concept album. . . I can feel the "saudade" in the performances that thinking back to home might bring, or I imagine I do.
  2. I haven't bought many Venus releases this decade. I really dislike the covers, REALLY dislike them. And I'm not crazy about the house engineering sound at all. I do really like the Wilen, Shepp and Sanders titles I have, those I find different than later releases in important ways.
  3. True. But Trane seemed for a while to be about being himself. . . and then about going way beyond himself. That's the harder path!
  4. I like Ali with Trane. I confess it's possibly because I identify with that "pulse" drumming as it was the plateau I was beginning to travel when I was last playing drums on my own and just drumming for an hour or so whatever entered my mind and heart. I never played that way with others, but years after I stopped playing with others. I like that style of drumming and I saw Trane working it. But Elveen. . . sheesh. Still I don't think Elveen was willing to go where Trane was going and knew it.
  5. I agree, I'm a Nara fan and this is a great album.
  6. Yesterday I listened to the LPs, today it's DSD remastered LP facsimile cds. They sound good. . . but . . . and I hate to say this. . . the LPs sound better!
  7. Hope it was a great one Pete!

Yes, a very good sounding SHM-CD.
  9. Some LPs today. First, sides one and two of this powerhouse from my past: Then this great LP bought last year (I've had cd copies before)--wow it sounds good.
  10. I don't have enough information about the cost differences between the two formats to say whether a 4 to 5 dollar difference is warranted. We're also talking about a European cd here and there is always going to be a cost to an import opposed to a domestic release, which is not an issue in this world of global digital. My feeling, based on what little I know, is that what we are seeing on average IS the competitive margins as if there were ways for one to be cheaper and still allow greedy owners and distributors and retailers to make the money they want that would be reflected in the price points we have. If they can't make enough profit, as buyers won't pay the price, the format will die. The structures of the two formats seem to handicap a format that needs to be manufactured, warehoused and shipped. I think we are seeing the basic cost differences we are ever likely to see and it's up to the buyer to choose how to spend the coin. Now I'm going back to spinning some Jobim on disc.
  11. But I don't see how a physically manufactured disc can ultimately be competitive to files on a server somewhere. That would be like wishing for some irrational impossible thing to occur. What I'm satisfied with is that I can find a lot of what I want used, or I can buy new excellent budget reissues from Japan at what I was paying for new domestic cds last decade, and I'm getting better sound for my money. So in fact cd is competitive for me cost-wise with it's cost to me in the past, and I'm enjoying that. This really isn't the place for the discussion and I'm not really wanting to discuss. I'm just not interested in digital in non-physical form and realize that choice comes with a cost factor. I'm willing to pay that factor, though I shouldn't buy any more discs, I already have a third of my collection in storage as I don't have enough "approved" storage/display space in our tiny house in the woods. It's time to downsize but I know myself well enough to know that even if I did I'd still be acquiring discs.
  12. Sure. But I don't want MP3 files. To me they have far less value, so I understand why they cost less. I'm willing to "lose" competitively to a certain degree.
  13. But you can get it from Amazon marketplace or Prime for 16 or 17 dollars. . . which is still not 6 dollars, but I'd rather have the disc. (Haven't bought it but might in the near future).
  14. I really disagree with your assessment of later Jobim, and his singing voice, and encourage you to revisit. . . .:) But we're all different, I think Jobim was one of the most interesting musicians of the 20th century.
  15. I've come to realize that I love bossa nova, but that I love Jobim most. Favorites of mine are "Stone Flower" on CTI, "Matita Pere" aka "Jobim" and "Inedito." I've also become a big fan of two singers who were part of Jobim's "familia" band, Paula Morelenbaum and Maucha Adnet, and recommend any of their albums. Outside of Jobim I really enjoy Joao Gilberto, Nara Leoa, Eliane Elias and Baden Powell's bossa nova work, and the work of many others, many of whom I know others will begin to list post haste.
